Underarm lump - is it cancer?

Hi

I went to the doctor’s on Monday morning as I found a hard lump underneath my right arm which had only appeared over the weekend.  It is not painful or red but is very obvious when wearing short sleeved tops.

The doctor checked my other arm and breasts and could not find any further lumps but wants to see me in two weeks’ time to see whether the lump has gone or not.  She said that it is the lymph gland swollen, due to either infection or possible cancer.

She told me that because I only had blood tests less than two weeks ago, these tests should have shown up anything to be worried about, but I still can’t help being anxious.  I have now come down with a cold and am hoping that the lump will go soon.

Should I feel anxious or am I just being silly?

Thanks

Jen

Hello Jen,

Poor you - anyone would feel anxious finding a lump and then being told there is even the tiniest chance it is cancer.

You did the right thing going to your GP, and s/he has done the right thing referring you to the breast clinic.  Hopefully it will be ‘just’ a swollen gland due to some infection and will go away on its own, but it needs to be checked out.  If your worst fears are realised they will very quickly sort out an excellent treatment plan for you to deal with it.

I know it’s hard, but try to keep your mind on positive and happy topics, make sure you have some treats, and if possible find someone you can confide in.  I didn’t tell anyone until after my diagnosis - and so when I did they had to run to catch up with where I was as it came as a bolt from the blue.

Do drop back here any time, and please let us know how you get on - we love nothing better than hearing that someone has left by the door labelled ‘freedom’

I too have found a lump under my right armpit near the top of my shoulder and I think I can feel another small one just above the other one.  My doctor did a breast exam but said she could not feel anything to worry about but to come back if it did not go away. i too am worried as I am now waiting for a ultra sound to see what they are.  Has anyone else had these lumps and what were they?
