Unusual side-effects after radiotherapy

I wonder if anyone has experienced some unusual non-listed side-effects from radiotherapy. I finished my five days of radio a couple of months ago and since then I’ve had some weird sensations, the main one being a feeling that occurs several times a day as if something like an insect is crawling up my neck on my surgery side. I genuinely thought it was a spider the first time I felt it and it freaked me out but each time I feel it, I know there’s nothing there! I know it sounds completely mad :flushed:! I also have developed very sensitive fingertips on the same side. Has anyone else experienced such bizarre sensations? I think anyone outside of this forum might think I’m completely bonkers :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Although the sensations you feel are going to seem weird, its not entirely surprising. Any sensation changes are classic neurological effects, and they can crop up in odd places. Nerves are sometimes long and connect to different places. Right now as I type, the last 2 fingers on my right hand are tingling - its been a year since my radiotherapy.
Breast oedema causing problems thickened lumpy skin ( that improves after massage, but only temporarily).
The most impressive effect that had me worried for a while was a petichial rash all over my bust a couple of weeks ago. Glad it faded and went after a few days. Realised it must have been down to a bra that I’d been wearing in the heat all day at work. I’d worn it previously during shaving my dog, and though washed many times since, there were still some fine remnents of hair embedded. Only affected my irradiated side as the skin must be more sensitive and prone to an allergic reaction - that was unexpected!

Thanks for your reply @entropy. It’s good to know that these sensations are maybe not so weird after all! I have the same tingling as you in two of my fingers on the surgery side and that hand is also very puffy with attractive sausage fingers :joy:! I’m quite surprised that all these things have developed now as I’ve only experienced a little bit of fatigue since the radiotherapy finished in the middle of June but I guess these are just some of the gifts that radiotherapy keeps on giving!

I thought I felt relatively ok after radiotherapy last August, but had a lull in energy around December with associated flare up of symptoms with cording. Then another episode of cording in March. Been ok since then. Energy levels can go up and down for quite a few months after. However, I did have a lot of radiotherapy-19 fractions, 48 Grays total. Only had 1 SLN removed with my WLE and was fine after that so most tiredness and sations are down th radiotherapy I think.

If you are experiencing hand puffiness, that sound like oedema and needs addressing to prevent it becoming permanent or worse. If you bring it up with your BCN, they may be able to offer you some pressure garments and physiotherapy to improve it.

Thanks so much for that advice. I had wondered if I might be developing some lymphoedema as I recently had to get an extra link put into my watch strap which I’ve worn for years, as it had become too tight on my wrist after my WLE. Apart from the puffy hand and fingers, the rest of my arm is fine. I did speak to one of the BC nurses a couple of weeks ago who suggested gently massaging my upper arm but, as it hasn’t made any difference, I think your suggestion of contacting her again is a good one so I’ll give her a call tomorrow. It’s so helpful to have this forum to air some issues and get some very helpful responses. Thanks again. x

I wonder if anyone else has had similar symptoms - I don’t know if they are related to radiotherapy. I finished my 5 day radiotherapy treatment on 22 August . It wasn’t until two weeks after that I developed a nasty sore rash under my bust ( wearing underwired bra didnt help). With help and advice from the review radiographer it has now healed and all has settled down nicely. HOWEVER I have developed an itchy , spotty rash on top half of my breast. Anti histamine tablets and aloe Vera gel are helping . Can’t think of anything I’ve worn or done to irritate the skin. Any suggestions?

On second thoughts, it might be heat rash on sensitive skin . I took care to cover up with a long sleeved cotton top in the sun last Friday, but it was very warm. Any one else had this?
