Very worried re back pain

Hi All

I know there are many posts on this but just wondered if somebody could help?

I was dx in 2005, stage 1 no nodes had chemo, radio and tamoxifen.

Just before christmas I got a pain in the bottom of my back. I have had a slipped disc so sometimes get this so my GP did some reflex tests etc and said it was that.

I t has not gone worse but it has not gone better. it is not constant and I dont get it at night so I am trying to reassure myself with that!

However it now goes down the front of my leg sometimes in my shin bone and knee!! Again its not all the time but when it twinges it really worries me.

I dont want to go back to GP again because she thinks I am a hypochondriac - has anyone had anything like this? I now think I have a recurrence in my hip because its going down my leg but I don’t have hip pain. If its in your hip do you have pain in the hip?

Sorry to ramble on - any help would be really appreciated as starting to get completely paranoid.

Love to all

Alise

It sounds a bit like sciatica to me-your disc could be pinching the sciatic nerve. You know the only answer though-if it persists for 3 weeks and it is a pain new to you then go back to the doc and say exactly what you fear.
Good Luck

Hi Alise,

As you have had back problems before and don’t want to ‘bother’ your GP, why not ring a breast care nurse where you were originally treated and tell her about your worries. I did that when I got a rash near my scar and they had me in to see the surgeon very quickly and he immediately ruled out skin mets. It’s better than fretting all the time as I’m sure you know even if you do feel like you’re turning into a hypochondriac !

I have bone mets in my spine and ribs and wouldn’t have known about them had I not had a bone scan at diagnosis. I didn’t get any pain from them. Chemo reduced them a bit and now I’m on maintenance treatment.

Hope all goes well.

Hi Alise
I would second what Val says. It sounds very much like sciatica from your slipped disc. Rather than keep worrying, go back to your GP. You may just need some anti inflammatories, physio and exercises.
Good luck
Margaret

hi, just to say I have exactley the same sympoms and I had x ray . over two years ago now, but it was and still is sciatica, but it has been worse since op mainly because im so inactive now, and the docs say also due to lying on op table for 12 hours. nevert he less i have thought of mets think every twinge from now on will leave us paniky

take care xx

Thank you all so much for replying.

Went to GP today and she said after examining me she was 99% certain it was sciatica and my old back problem… However she said " Just to dot the i’s and cross the t’s I will do some routine blood tests but I dont expect them to show anything"!!

Result - I am hysterical !! I keep thinking that she found something when she examined me although she said she didn’t. I now have the agonising wait to see if they are OK!

has anyone else had this? O yo uthin if she had suspected something she would have to have said?

Love to all

She is just double checking things for you hun xxx she sounds like a good doctor, some doctors would just send you home as you have got a back problem which is very likely where this is all stemming from xxx I feel she is double checking to be 100% sure for your peice of mind and to make sure you are 100% health which you will be xxx try not to worry x though I know that is easier said than done xx

Alise.
I went last Thursday to Gp. I told him I was worried I had mets to bones as I had so much pain in my spine & hips since Oct. He felt my spine (outside my clothes)shoved in my hip & said he was sending me for a scan.
I do not think he felt anything, It was a quick feel, no lingering or going over anything.

Now I feel like I’m wasting NHS time & money because I’m not in pain at the moment!Maybe he should have given me blood test first!
Oh my Alise, it’ so difficult isn’t it? I am sure that if she had any doubt in her mind at all, she would have sent you for a scan! When is your next visit to hospital? I’m not saying this because i think theres anything wrong, but you can maybe ask him for more tests if you are not satisfied?

Hi everyone, glad I found this thread, I went last Friday to see my GP, cos Ive had a pain in my lower left back, put off going for a while, but its getting worse, specially at night. Hes sending me for blood tests and a scan, and now Im feeling so sick in case its come back. I have a friend who is going through tests for secondarys at the moment, so cant talk to her shes got enough to think about. When i first had my operation in 2008, I never for one minute thought about it coming back, and now thats all I can think about.

Hi all

Had blood test done on Tuesday and was told it would be back yesterday - Wednesday.

I just cannot bring myself to ring - everytime I pick up the phone I feel sick and put it down.

Nobody from GP’s has rang me - do yo uthink they would have if it had been bad? They have had it 2 days now so I am hoping no news is good news - does anyone know if they ring you if there;s something wrong - I just cant pick up the phone and am SO fed up of this.

Hi Alise, I think you have to ring, I dont think the doctor will call you, thats what happens here. Please try and call as you will just make yourself ill with worrying, is there someone maybe who could call for you? or be with you when you ring? Remember we are all here thinking of you.

hi alise iwork in drs surgery our procedure is if any abnormal b/tests we would ring or contact patient . so if you havnt heard from surgery im sure it will be because they are prob normal . try not to worry . x

Hi Shirley and maisie

Thank you so much for replying.

Maisie - if they were abnormal would your surgery ring or contact patient straightaway or do they wait a few days?

I feel like I am going completely insane . . .

hi alise, usually same day as getting result back ,which in most cases is usually 24 hrs from having blood test, if unable to contact patient would keep trying eg next day .try not to worry hope this information helps .maisie x.

Thank you so much Maisie and everyone for helping me.

I finally managed to ring this morning as I thought that nothing could be worse than the way I was feeling and - THEY WERE ALL NORMAL!!! I was so so relieved!

I still have bad back but now calcium test and full blood count were normal I feel a lot better about it. GP not suggested scan - she is now sure it is my disc.

Wishing everyone the same good news with any tests they are waiting for - Shirley please let me know how you get on.

Love to all
