Waiting for diagnosis on enlarged lymph node in neck

Absolutely terrified. Consultant seems convinced that this is a secondary tumour and prior to even getting the results of the biopsy has arranged for me to have CT scan and is talking about treatment - possibily herceptin. Don’t get actual results until Monday so still can’t really take this in…

So sorry to hear that you are playing the waiting game and that the consultant is pre-epmting the results. They can be wrong tho - fingers crossed that everything comes back ok.

I am glad that you decided to follow this up quickly Patricia and hope that you are going to be able to stop it in its tracks! Lumps like this just are not worth playing the waiting game over. I had a lot of them and 2 lots of chemo didnt control it but herceptin worked and worked very fast.Part of my problem was that I had already had so many different chemo treatments that my consultant want to play a waiting game. Of course I wonder if they had realised I was her2 positive sooner that maybe I wouldnt have got the bone mets at all. Will be thinking of you on Monday when you get the results.

Thank you .Could someone please tell me about CT scans?

Happy to Patricia. I have had quite a few over the years but they all differ a bit. Have you had a letter with info. For some you are not supposed to eat for a couple of hours before and then you are asked to drink about a litre of some aniseedy tasting liquid, sometimes it has just been water. Other times I havent had any of that and have just gone straight to the scanner. On some occasions I have had a contrast dye injected. They usually canulate for this beforehand and then while you are on the scanner they inject. Be warned of verrrrry strange sensation. It feels like a whooosh goes straight to your nether regions and you feel you have wet yourself with very hot wee!!! but you don’t. The older machines at the marsden used to take quite a long time for scanning 30-40 mins but the more modern ones only about 10 mins. It’s bit like a donut ring you are in. Not claustrophobic at all. If you have had contrast dye injected you may be asked to wait around for some time in the hospital afterward just in case you have an unusual reaction.

Hope that helps.

Thank you Dawn. I feel very ignorant, but what is the difference between this and an MRI scan? Sorry to go on but I feel so angry about this. I have just changed jobs (start Tuesday) and had asked for lots of tests prior to handing my notice in but my consultant refused to take seriously my concerns about my neck. I told him that I felt it was getting bigger and changing and his comments were “it will do that”! I even asked about a CT scan then, and he said that this was only when there was evidence of a tumour, but he didn’t check my neck again as I had already had a biopsy in Jan 2007. But of course this lump is, as I said different. Did you have lumps in the lymph nodes in your neck? We used to be able to read each others profiles, but I don’t know how to do this now.
