Waiting for my partners results

Hi

I am very worried about my partner…she has recently been for her first mammogram at 44 years and been called back! she was referred as she is classed as high risk due to her family history.
We went back yesterday as they could see a chalky area on the first test, they said it is nothing to worry about but would need to do another mammogram and a ultrasound and possibly a needle biopsy, they did all 3, one of the biopsys was on her lymph nodes as I think they said it looked slightly enlarged, the other on the area of the chalky image, we now have to wait 5 days for the results, I’m very worried, she has no lumps or any other symptoms only what has shown on the mammogram and ultrasound, at the moment I can’t help but think the worst, please can anyone help? thank you

Chris

Hi Chris

just popping in as I can see you are new and just posted, I am sure some of our experienced community will come along and support you.  Just to say, what you have described in terms of procedures is very common, at the breast clinic.  The waiting is the worse for you both.  For me the biggest help I had from my partner was having another person repeating what had been said at the appointment, as sometimes you don’t hear.

Trying not to worry is tricky, very often these tests come back clear, and I am sure they have said this to you already.  Also very common that you can feel no lump or have no other symptoms.   It is understandable you are worried, if you can keep busy that helps at lot.   All the best.

hi Chris,
Although it doesn’t feel like it, thankfully whatever it is has been picked up & can now be dealt with. Mostly, all turns all to be well, but if it is bc then it is very treatable these days. BC outcomes are amongst the best out there.
Waiting & the uncertainty is the worst part of going through this, but do come & chat on here whenever you need to. Also, use this site for info or macmillan & avoid general googling as it does not reassure & only heightens anxiety.
Do let us know how you both get on if you want to.

Hi Chris

I was called back after my very first mammogram aged 50 and had the biopsy and it was just benign calcification. I understand that 1 in 4 ladies are routinely recalled after a first mammogram as the radiographers have nothing to compare it with. Since that mammogram all other routine 3 -yearly ones have been FINE. Although I was diagnosed with early stage Breast cancer last November, 14 years after ,  it was completely unconnected with the benign calcification which I still have and it isn’t a problem. So I know it is easier said than done, but try not to worry. It is good that we have such good diagnostics these days to pick stuff up early, and indeed to reassure us when the tests show we haven’t got it. Thinking of you at this anxious time.

Thank you for all your comments, it means a great deal to me, I understand what you are saying and I’m trying my best, she is much stronger and positive than me, I feel stupid, selfish and weak as I shouldn’t be getting upset and depressed in front of her, I should be strong! the problem I have is of late I’m one of life’s worriers, always assuming the worst,
I’m so scared of any bad news as she is my entire world…I really need to pull myself together and deal with it, it will soon be Tuesday, thanks again.

We finally got the results on Tuesday, turns out its DCIS breast cancer, we meet with surgeon Tuesday to hopefully get a date for a double mastectomy which will be sometime in March, can’t explain how devistated we are, thanks for support

hi Chris,
It is always a shock getting a diagnosis & having major surgery to contend with, but as Patricia says, with a dcis diagnosis, full recovery is the normal outcome.
You will both come out the other side.
