Waiting for results

I’ve been reading various discussions since newly diagnosed on 9th Sept following a routine mammogram recall - I’m 54 and it’s taken me a week to pluck up courage to write this! I had surgery on 15th - and get the results tomorrow. Obviously very scared - despite being told the breast lump was ‘very small and very treatable’. How long does it take to understand what you’re all talking about - it’s like a different language!?! Have had amazing support from the Breast Care nurse at the hospital

Hi Carolj,

Just want to say welcome to the club no-one wants to join!
Its a whole new language isn’t it,there is a thread somewhere which explains all the abbreviations but if you don’t understand something ,just ask.
You are in a very scary place just now, waiting on results. But at least when you know what you are dealing with you can move on.
What surgery did you have? How are you after the surgery?
My surgeon used the same words “very small and very treatable” and I am lucky as I don’t need chemo or radiotherapy. But of course everyone is different.
I have my fingers crossed that your results are good and hope you keep us informed.
Hugs

Thanks ! I had a wide local excision/ans/slnbx (?) - asked loads of questions pre-op so thought I understood it all!! Have just seen the “Waiting for test results” thread - would it help to be on there??!!

Sorry !! Just worked out how to post a comment!!! Pressed the button too soon!! I’m quite sore but ok - all still feels a bit surreal!

Hi Carol

Welcome to the BCC forums, you may find BCC’s resource pack helpful, it has been designed for those newly diagnosed. If you would like a copy just follow the link below to order a copy:

If you feel it would help to talk to someone in confidence about any concerns you have, then please give the helpline a call, the staff here are all either breast care nurses or people who have personal experience of breast care issues. The number to call is 0808 800 6000 the lines open Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm and Saturdays 9am - 2pm.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Best wishes
Lucy

Hi Carol,

ANS = axillary node sampling
SLNBX = sentinel lymph node biopsy

This just means they took a few lymph nodes to see if there was any spread.I had the same and mine were clear so fingers crossed yours are too.
Its maybe an idea to ask to write down your results tomorrow or for a copy of your pathology report.I know when I got mine I was so pleased that I did not need chemo I didn’t really take in anything else! Fortunately I was back 2 weeks later for a wound problem and they explained it all again and this time i was able to take it all in.
Try and keep busy today and good luck for tomorrow,
Dot

Hi Dot

Many thanks - did you have any other treatment? Fingers definitely tightly crossed!

Carol

Hi Carol,

I had a mastectomy (due to having 3 small lumps) and an immediate reconstruction, and now just Tamoxifen for 5 years.I am fine now except for my emotions which are still in shock I think! I am not sure everything has sunk in even yet!
All the best, let us know how it goes,
Dot

Hi Carolj, the waiting is always the worst isn’t it! I feel like I have lived in a waiting room since I was diagnosed in July. My worst wait was the 1.5 hours it took to see my oncologist last week to hear whether my CT and bone scans were clear. I had to have all my nodes cleared as the SN had cancer in. And they were clear…the best news I could have! It sounds like they have caught yours early with the mammogram…I do hope so.

Lots of love, Maggie x.
