Hi, i was first told i had cancer on the 29th Aug and after 2 lots of biopsy the referral went through for a single mastectomy and DIEP reconstruction, i was told after the referral went through i would hear from plastics within 2 weeks, ive now gone over this and still havent heard anything, is this normal? Im feeling really stressed as i have so much still planned on the lead up to Christmas which i need to sort, i was originally told id be looking at the end of October, does anyone have any experience of this and is this a normal wait? I feel like everything is in limbo
Hi Ariella,
I’m a couple of weeks ahead of you in the journey. I had my results from the biopsies the day after Aug bank holiday, I had my first appointment with the surgeon a couple of weeks after that. The MDT team put forward an option for surgery which the surgeon decided wasn’t suitable for me when I had my appointment with him. I then had another 2 week wait for my next appointment whilst I evaluated the revised options.
However, they did pencil a date in for me after that first appointment so as not to delay surgery. I’ve just had surgery on Monday of this week.
Have you followed up with the breast cancer nurses to see if they can advise? I totally understand the need to have a date so that you can plan everything around it.
Hi @trixie17 i’ve left my bc nurse a message so im hoping she will get back to me this afternoon and can chase it for me, there was a delay getting my results back from my 2nd biopsy for the calcifications so i know the referral didnt go off until thise results were back, so it’s 2 and a half weeks now, ive cancelled holidays and things that i know i will definitely not be able to do but i’m thinking about Christmas.
If you don’t mind me asking, what surgery are you having done now? What was the change of plan?
Hopefully they will come back to you swiftly. Fingers crossed.
Initially, they suggested therapeutic mammoplasty but when I spoke to the surgeon, he advised my breast size wasn’t suitable for that (too small). I ended up having a lumpectomy with LICAP, fat taken from the side to reconstruct the breast. I also had sentinel node surgery, 5 lymph nodes removed.
Feeling tired and a bit of discomfort under my arm but otherwise ok. Keeping moving around & doing the physio exercises and resting when I need to. Glad that things are finally progressing .
Glad you’re doing ok and thanks for sharing x
Hi @ariella
Sorry to hear you’re experiencing delays, I understand how stressful it can be! I did have to chase my team quite a lot at the beginning - my surgeon even said to me to chase them if I don’t hear so they’re very used to it! Fingers crossed for you that you hear from them soon ![]()
I had no answer from my bc nurse today so ive also emailed, i do have a private GP as welk so i may get their concierge team on the case if i havent heard anything tomorrow. The waiting is really getting on my nerves, thank you for your message x
That’s frustrating
you won’t have been forgotten, it’s just most likely just long wait lists but you’re absolutely right to chase for updates x
