Hi Julie
Triple negative meaqns that the cancer doesn’t have oestrogen (er), or progesterone (pr) hormone receptors. It also doesn’t have the her2 growth factor. Thus the cancer is sometimes called ‘triple negative’ or er- pr- and her2-.
Triple negative tumours do have other growth factors but no one is absolutely sure what they are.
If a tumour is triple negative it is not responsive to hormonal drugs such as tamoxifen and arimidex, nor to the drug herceptin. Triple negative tunours are thought to be more responsive to chemotherapy.
Only you can decide how much information you want about your lump. Some people want lots of information and some prefer to know less. There are no right or wrong answers to this.
best wishes
Jane
