What does this mean on mammogram report?

“There is a 2.3 cm margiated density. This should be ultrasound to confirm solid vs cystic nature”

I am assuming the margiated density means a lump or mass?

Hi

It means the radiographer can’t be sure about the nature of a ‘mass’ found in your breast and recommends you have an ultrasound examination (far easier than a mammogram) when they can determine if it’s a cyst (which may be aspirated), a different kind of mass like a fibroadenoma (gristly tissue that can develop in the breast) or something more suspicious that will require further investigation.

I’m assuming the word is ‘maginated’. Actually I’m surprised you have the report, without a practitioner to feed back to you. It’s not usual practice.

Please remember that the majority of breast lumps referred to clinics turn out to be benign (cysts, fibroadenomas etc) and there is no cause to assume you have breast cancer unless/until your consultant says you have. It’s usually a very anxious time but, if you are in the NHS, your referral will be within two weeks, under the NHS promise. Meantime, do everything you can to keep your stress levels down.

I wish you all the best and hope you get good results from the ultrasound xx
