WHAT EXACTLY ARE HOT SPOTS?

HELLO FRIENDS,

PLEASE COULD YOU ADVICE ME WHAT ARE HOT SPOTS ON A BONE SCAN?

ARE THE BONE METZ OR ARTHIRITIS? HOW DO THEY KNOW WHAT THE DIFFERENCE IS?

THANKS LUCKYSTAR***

Hi Luckystar,

Hotspots on a bone scan can be due to a number of different things including arthritis, a broken bone that is healing, or even a bone infection. If it is just the one odd hotspot your onc will probably scan again in 6 months to see if there is any change. Usually other factors are taken into account if bone mets is suspected. These will include blood tests. If there are raised tumour markers, or raised levels of alkaline phosphatase, or calcium they may indicated bone mets. Other types of scans may be used as well as a bone scan - possibly a CT scan or MRI especially if it is the spine involved.
