What follow up should I expect?

I was wondering what follow up care is normally given as hopefully my treatment is coming to an end.

I have my follow up appt at the Oncology clinic on Friday having just completed 3 weeks rads after 2 WLE for low grade DCIS.

Rads recommended as I was not considered low risk due to family cancer history/age (51) & size of my DCIS although removed with good margins.

I think my surgeon mentioned she would be seeing me again 6 months after she gave me results of 2nd op on 1/12/10. To check mainly I think that boob still looks good & not gone a funny shape. Also said annual mammos for 5 years then every 2 years until age of 60. (Then back on national screening).

Apart from this is it possible I’ll be discharged (I hope) from Onc side as no mention so far that I need anything else such as Tamox(I’d probably already be on it if relevant).

It would be interesting to see what follow up we get as treatment seems to vary so much from hospital to hospital I expect follow up does as well.

Lynne

Hi Lynne

I had the same treatment as you and didn’t see my surgeon until a year after my first op then had my first mammogram about a month after that. I will see him again in December and that carries on for 5 years. I’m speaking from North Kent but not sure if it’s the same everywhere.
Best wishes Mandeville

I had 2 WLE’s and 15 rads for 6cm mixed grade last June/August and October and am not due to see surgeon again. Oncologist app. due July and mammogram year post 2nd op - August. Last app. was with Oncologist registrar in January but couldn’t give me any results/tell me whether I was clear or not.

It all seems so far away and the not knowing whether I still have DCIS is taking it’s toll on my emotional state (am normally a strong person but this one has got me running scared).

Once they have done their “procedures” you are left to get on with it, counselling promised by GP but nothing was done. This website has been wonderful.

I didn’t get clear margins so not looking forward to the first mammogram post treatment.

Seems treatment similar in my area - Frimley, Surrey. Anyone out there can advise on their experiences of first mammogram post treatment?

Take care

Hi Lynne

I had WLE in March last year. This was followed by 6 FEC and 20 Rads. I had my first mammogram in February of this year and everything fine.

My surgeon has given me a 10 year plan sheet which shows what will happen through the years. Have already got my appointment for next year and will also go for mammogram every year. Also will have a DEXA scan every 2 years because I take Femara which can effect the bones and joints.

I think we are very lucky in my area as everything seems to be worked out for you. I can not fault any part of my treatment. As you have said I think the after care is different in each area.

Hi

I went to see my Onc on Friday; thankfully she confirmed 4 weeks post rads everything looking good. I was quite relieved to say the least; although you think you are doing ok it was good to hear it.

She confirmed what happens next. I should see the surgeon 6 months post my second Op.

I have annual mammos for 5 years (12 months from diagnosis).
I then go back onto national screening; they tend not to do you everyother year now for the next 5 as results show you gain nothing by having a mammo every 3 years as opposed to every 2.

I also have to see her again in 4 months(before first mammo) then again in 6 months (after first annual mammo).

I did ask about pain on boob that has had 2 ops & rads. She said it would be quite likely; confirmed they would also mammo the other boob. If very painful they may be able to give me somthing to ease it; would only be for a short time.

I was relieved she said they try to let you have the results as part of the appt but they cannot always guarantee this if they are running late. She realises how worrying it is waiting for results.

Take care
Lynne

I will continue to see my oncologist every 6 months due to being cancer of unknown primary for the first year at least.
