Distant healing please… Please add my name to your list - I am having a very bad day emotionally today having had my first chemo session 3 days ago. Yes, of course I’ll add you all to the list. I find it impossible to keep in touch with the people I send healing to unless we can contact eachother confidentially which I am unable to do on this site (18 months ago when I started sending Reiki it was a possibility because we had contact buttons). Might I therefore suggest that you join another breast cancer site (if you haven’t already done so) as well which is made up of many members who still subscribe to this one too.

Reiki and some website ‘proofs’ of it I’ve just found this post of the past that asks about Reiki and any ‘proofs’ of it .

is one website that gives some information on some trials conducted into Reiki and next is one from America where they have concluded that Reiki does work nccam.nih.gov/health/reiki/
I have been having Reiki treatments for several months and it is a wierd sort of treatment but it has certainly helped me. I am therefore learning Reiki myself so that my friends and family can also partake of it.
Reiki helps with the emotional aspects of our nasty disease.
Not scientific proof Neither of these websites offer proper scientic evidence…by which I mean double blind randomised scientific trials. When any treatment is tested you can’t tell whether it works unless you also have a control group who don’t receive th tretament.
Having said this many people do feel better after seeing a reiki practioner, and as Phoebe said earlier in this thread what’s wrong with a psychosomatic response. Touch and talking are both helpful in helping people feel better, (but they don’t cure cancer, or make cancer go away, or delay recurrence or prolong life) but I don’t see why elaborate fallacies and myths need to built out of these ordinary qualities.
Now proponents of reiki and many other alternative therapies reckon that you can’t test reiki by scientific methods…or that the principles of science somehow don’t apply. I don’t accept this view.

Control goup has been used I do wonder Jane just how you would do a double blind trial, that is for physical tests (taking pills and medicine) surely Reiki is a little more than physical, there is no way to rule it out from a control group as it can be sent to a person unbeknown and as it is only for the person’s ‘highest good’ it truly cannot harm. But I believe trials have been done that satisfy some of the best brains. A control group has been used in the tests. and those receiving Reiki from a specified healer have had a better outcome than those not.

I guess it all comes down to what you believe and we believe different things.
I just don’t believe that anyone can send reiki to me without me knowing (well I believe they can believe they are sending it…but I certainly wouldn’t receive it.)
Would be very interested though to have references to the trials you think have been done with a control group.

Precious Reiki A Gift to any who wish to receive it Hi JaneRA,
that is the beauty of Reiki, if you do not want it you just do not receive it. That does not mean that you couldn’t be sent Reiki, it is not wasted it will be used to the good. Some people have huge blocks where they cannot recive so many things but that does not disprove that they are there.
I have in a previous posting given two web addresses where some ‘proofs’ can be found.
I freely admit that I was a bit sceptical about Reiki until I experienced a treatment from my now teacher. It has the added advantage of some other alternative methods in that you stay dressed and it helps emotions as well as all else, it seems to ‘go for’ the area most in need whether you realize that area needs healing or not.
I truly feel it is a gift from… a higher power… God… whatever best suits the person.
If you go back to the very early postings Jane you will find a practitioner of the gift has posted a very informative letter.

Well I did look up both the websites you said had reiki ‘proofs’ on them. One was the International House of Reiki and one the National Center for Complimentary Medicine and there wasn’t anything on either that constitutes scientific ‘proof’ in my eyes.
I don’t doubt that human communication and touch can help people feel better but I don’t believe in higher powers, whether called God or not.
I think it was Richard Dawkins (not everone’s favourite person) who said that its true you can’t disprove anything but you can put a probablity value on it. Like gods, werewolves and teapots in orbit round mars you can’t disprove reiki but personally I can’t see anything in it to make me want to receive it.
