hi
ive bought a wash bag and some front button pj,s
i will wear crocs on feet and take all wash stuff
ive bought a thin robe
is it very hot in hospital? am i best with short pj,s and do u wear a clean pr every day?
i suppose clean towels every day and send them home with visitors?
im also really worried i might be having a period
what will i do if i cant shower
will i be able to get up for the loo?
sorry for all the questions i have never been in hospital as you can tell
You only need to take with you what will make you comfortable. Take plenty to read, the days are long! You’ll be out of bed, as soon as possible, so going to the loo will not be a problem-dont forget if they have done SN your urine will be blue. Going in the shower was one of the first things that I did when I got home, what joy!
I dont know how long they have told you to expect to be in hospital, I managed to only stay in hospital over night - had my mx Monday afternoon, was home Tuesday afternoon. Drains and all.
The district nurse called every day, after getting home, she was great.
Hope this has answered some of your worries
Julia
I had never been in hospital prior to my mx so it was semi new to me as well. I had the mx and full anc at 6pm, rang to see about going to the loo and the nurses helped me to the loo in my room (NHS but had own room with its own loo and sink as I’d had chemo first) at 3am but left me to it.After that, I was helped to the loo once but was fine on my own afterwards. At 10am I asked about a wash etc and they said I could go for a shower on my own with drains in. I was a bit surprised but it was absolutely fine.
Front button pjs deffo best idea and a thin robe. I found it warm but then was having hot sweats from chemo even though it was January ! Towels went home with visitors.
The op was on the Weds teatime and by Sat lunchtime my drains were removed and I went home. I personally didn’t want to go home with drains in but could have gone home Fri morning if I had.
You’ll be fine - I thought I’d need chill pills but went in at 8am and was so calm all day, even when I was walking to the theatre.
Hi lincs lady, you may find it warm in hospital so short pjs are fine or a button front nightshirt, just take your usual wash things as for your period take some products with you,i didnt but started while in so the nurse gave me some towels until my daughter brought some in for me. You didnt say what you are having done, but you should be able to go to toilet as for showering after my mastectomy i couldnt shower for first couple of days (couldnt move arm properly) once home i held shower so it didnt go near my surgery. The nurses will look after you and put you at ease The nurses on my ward would lend you a towel if you didnt have one.How long you are in will depend on what you need to take, i was in 4 days and took 2 towels. Hope that is of some help julie x
Hiya, I found some hard boiled sweets really good esp when I had come round after op.Your throat feels dry Unfortunately I had missed lunch and dinner so was starving by 9.00 so wished I had taken some choch or bix’s with me. Also some squash, even though I was only in a day I would have prefered it to the hospital water!!I also took anti-bacterial soap/hand gel in with me. Saw that on another site to protect against MRSA .Oh, I found my i pod good whilst I was waiting, took my mind of the op. Rocked to Bon Jovi then had loads of drugs lol. Seriously, best of luck. I felt so much better when the surgery was over. xx
Money! I found I never had enough for the phone/tv machine over the ed - worked out at £3 per day. Also there were very small lockers at hospital so it was more a question of who could bring various bits in each day.
Re your surgery questions - I had mx and immediate ld recon - spent a week in hospital. I went in on the day of the op, did not know which ward I was going to after the op, that was unsettling. Had the drains in for 10-12 days (I forget how many)which was uncomfortable and so much better when they came out. On the plus side the pain was well managed. was not allowed to bathe or shower due to dressings but had a stripwash each day and was able to move around on the day after the op. Felt elated at the beginning but my mood sort of dropped when I got home - was not prepared for that and it was a shock to be depressed when I had been so desperate to get home.
Hi,
I would add lip salve and moisturiser to the list it gets very dry in hospital. I also found I needed very light reading only (ie trashy mags) as I couldn’t concentrate on anything for a while!
Good Luck
I was helped to shower on day 2 ,some places don’t let you shower while drains are in and dressings on but my hospital does.It does make you feel better. But do take some wipes in case and also for a quick freshen up.
My hospital provides towels too.
love
