Hi Scann-ees!
Hmmm, looking at the monitor during a bone scan: you’re a brave lady Emily, wouldn’t catch me doing that!! Did doze off during my first bone scan tho.
As I have a chemistry background I was asking about which isotope they were using, etc. intelligent questions hmmhmm? - didn’t think much about what the scan might show up…
Shoes??? I was wrapped round and round like a mummy! On my back too, there are obviously different procedures (hope this helps those following this thread)
LilacB - oh what a mega-frustrating morning!! Good that they can fit you in tomorrow though. Will be thinking of you.
Thanks EmilyJane - I was actually quite cool about the scan, telling myself that the GP is just being a bit over-zealous but after today’s fiasco I got a little bit rattled, no-one’s fault but my own so muttered about my own stupidity under my breath.
i’m going to ask for a sedative, they’re going to start putting notes on my notes soon “watch it this one’s a druggie, always asking for tranquillisers” I’ll tell you later what the MRI was like, Fiona x
I eventually had my bone scan yesterday. Am a little ashamed of myself cos I am usually very together but threw a bit of a hissy fit at the isotope bit. I said at the start that I’m not too keen on needles and also that my veins were none too clever - sods law of course that the only half decent ones are in my at risk arm so are dis-allowed! The staff member with the needle took one look and said ‘hmmmm… you weren’t kidding were you love - this is going to be a challenge’… after she had locate something that looked mildly promising in the back of my hand and deciding on a very fine needle she did the wiping with the swap - once that was done I knew the needle was on it’s way & I just lost the plot - stood up, announced I couldn’t do this anymore ! Very 3 year old spitting the dummy and heading towards stamping of feet!
Anyways - she calmed me down and was really nice about it … I think she had decided after me missing the day before I was being scanned come hell or high water! The scan was no problem - started at my head and worked it’s way to me feet and once my head and shoulders were clear of the camera I was able to watch myself appear on the monitor. I also pinged when I was done - just like a ready meal!
Results hopefully by the end of the week. Luckily our GP’s surgery is electronically linked to the hospital computer network so once the report is done he can access it.
Good luck to all those waiting for results or appointments.
One question … what do they use MRI Scans for ?
hey congratz Lilac-
i hate the idea of having nuclear meds i me…we go for so long being careful and WHAM in one feel swoop its inside us anyway
bet you are glad to have it over with
magnetic resonance imaging, mri, take images of your body by picking up on the nuclear stuff that coats you
wel, you know that so am telling myself probably
i had the MUGA which works same way…
actually it was funny
when I asked the nurse why the image was the same, over and over
yet the other monitor had data it was gathering
i asked her…why
and she said
that the machine was picking up the gamma rays in my body from the nuclear meds!!!
holy smokes…thats scary!
not to worry bout the throwing dummy – its just so hard to deal with this stuff
who on earth could blame you
not me!
I suppose my little strop is probably not the worst they have had to deal with - at least I didn’t get violent or abusing - but I think there was the odd naughty word in my little rant… so unladylike.
I remember my friend being mortified when her husband told the oncologist that he could shove his f’ing hospital up his ar*e after it was suggested that he be admitted … in fairness to the poor bloke he had seen more than his fair share of the ward and he had planned an indian take-away for his dinner that night. After much discussion he did agree to being admitted.
Hi LilacB
Ah well, it’s over now… very honest of you to tell all on this forum!!!
What’s a MRI for? Not sure but in my case it was to confirm what had been picked up on a CT scan (hotspot on liver that turned out to be non-cancerous).
Puzzled about comments about MRI and nuclear medicine scan. The half-life of these radioactive isotopes (time for half the radioactivity to decay) is a few hours, e.g. 6 hours for technetium-99 (Tc99) used in bone tracer scans. So unless the MRI was done immediately after the bone scan, I wouldn’t expect the results to be affected. Just thinking aloud though
sorry Mrsblue
you are correct. I was thinking of the bone scan.
guess I can blame chemo brain…but prob just sloppiness on my part
I have had both on same day…MRI and Bone.
the MRI uses those awful shakes to coat you…
not nuclear…
sorry bout that
results in - bones are normal… phew !!!
Good luck to all others waiting for results or scans.
Oh Woohoooo !!! GREAT news. Off you go and celebrate!
thanks for that Mrsblue
I was at my desk when I called for the GP’s surgery to see if the report was back - celebrated with a cup of coffee :-)))
MRI scan was fine. lots of faffing about with needles, veins collapsing etc like lilacblushes said. My veins are apperently “very fine”. Not painful. The noises are VERY loud. Wasn’t scared, had a little sleep almost. The only undignified part was getting on and off thescanner, and hey, who cares about dignity? Well I don’t. Honestly it was really not scary at all.
The thing is I now do not have the results til Tue, so I have the weekend to worry. I intend to use a very light cocktail of wine and sedatives to take the edge off it. Wrong I know, but necessary as I am a coward.

good for you…its over and done. it is VERY undignified to get into what I call the “boob table” something I had hoped to avoid. But hey, it gives them a clearer view so, why not. A little indignity for a good picture must be worth something!!!
I wonder why they have not addressed the loudness; if they can shrink a computer chip to the size of a fingernail, you would think the technology is there to fix noise.
Well, one more thing you can cross off your list!
Lilac – congratz on your results, sweetie.
