When do you feel well enough for a hol?

Hi All
Just looking for some thoughts. I was diagnosed in June and had mas. with immediate recon , and am now on 4 of 6 TAC.
I will, all being well follow that with 5 weeks of Radiotherapy. This will then be followed by Herceptin for a year.(Phew)
To cut a long story short, we are hoping to go to Disney Paris in Feb. I’m wondering what my energy levels are likely to be.It’s been a tough time for everyone and I thought it might be nice to have something to look forrward to.

Now I know everyone is different, I have been ok on chemo - at the moment just tire very easily.
I suppose I’d like to know from those who have been there what their thoughts are.

Many thanks

Hi Muddy,

I went on holiday 2 days after my rads ended, the hospital didnt really want me to go, but I was fed up of running my life around this BC lark. they relented and I am glad I went. I didnt feel tired on holiday but I have since being back in the old rut…

hope this helps

Love

I think your energy levels are very personal, and depends sometimes also from what you want to do.
I am half-way through my chemo - finished monday my last FEC, then I have 4 Taxol waiting for me… but next week I am off with my daughter to Venice, and a week’s cruise to Greece and Turkey - with the happy blessing of my onc, who said that the best thing is to rest and be happy (as much as possible). I hope there will be loads of sun and happy partying!

I don’t know how rads are - I hear they can make you tired. I don’t know how it compare to Chemo…

I found chemo very debilitating, rads were ok. I desperatly needed a break and managed to go to wales for a wk, 2 wks after end of rads, 4 wks after end of chemo and I was fine though the weather wasn’t!

2 and half mths after end of chemo I went to Turkey for a wk. It was very hot and I was still quite baldy so needed lots of sun block. Couldn’t get travel insurance to cover me for health either.

Energy wise I am still not up to full fitness 4 mths post chemo, but each day improves.

I went to Disneyland Paris a few yrs ago in Jan. It was bitterly cold so wrap up. Also a bit of walking as it is a large site. There are free buses to and from accom though. It was brill, I went on a school trip as an extra body and was dreading it but had a ball!

You should be well on the mend by feb, go for it!

Love Irene

I finished radiotherapy on 19 April and had a great holiday at the start of June, I realised i was Ok when I started running for buses again. I lost confidence when I was ill as I was exhausted all the time although I did go back to work in Feb. I had an office based job though which I could reach on public transport in less than an hour and my work gave me reduced hours 9.30 to 3.30 until I returned from my hols

Hi Muddy

I had 6 FEC sessions with my last on 3 Aug. I had surgey to remove part of breast and a complete auxilliary node removal on 30th Aug. I went on a weeks holiday on 15 Sep. We walked lots (with lots of sit downs between) and I enjoyed being able to taste food, although my appetite has still yet to return fully. Hubby was very understanding and went at my pace. No late nights, but it was holiday we had booked a week before my diagnosis and something we set our aims at. So it felt good and like we had really achieved something - and set me up for the next stage of radiotherapy.

Good luck

Like Pam, i went on holiday to Tenerife 2 days after finishing rads - it was great, swam in the pool everyday - just for 20 mins at a time like onc said and put cream on boob before getting in the pool.
No problems, did us a power of good.

Thanks folks
I knew I could rely on you all for feedback. Am frantically looking for good deals - am going to book direct on Disney website and thinking of Sequoia Lodge (boys age 11 and 8). We stayed in Cheyenne last year and I suppose I want to try to get some of that Disney Magic into this old life of mine!!
By the way - this is 4month anniversary of my diagnosis - still very fresh but I feel it’s been a very long 4 months.

i am going away two weeks after i finish radiotherapy at the end of November
I am also going to Disney Paris in February to stay in our timeshare there -can’t wait
I have stayed in the Sequoia Lodge and can recommend it. If you are looking for child friendly hotels can also recommend My Travel Explorers Hotel -Its off site but there are buses from the hotel to the park all the time
It will be cold in February so wrap up warmly
