when to colour my hair?

Hi everyone,
Does anyone have any idea when it is safe to colour your hair after finishing treatment. I finished my chemo begininning of Dec 07 and Rads end of Jan 08. My hair is growing back really quite curly, however a funny shade of grey/blonde/orange?? Yes really orange! I have tried a henna colour on it but it didn’t take at all. I’m 43 and feel a little young to stop colouring my hair. The oncologist told me not to colour it for at least 12 months, but I’m convinced there must be some safe hair colour out there. Has anyone coloured their hair yet, or know what products would be safe to use?

Hi emeraldeyes

If you use the search facility at the top of the page you should find quite a few old theads on this subject (type in colouring hair). I’m sure your fellow forum users will be along shortly though to give you some helpful hints and tips.

Kind regards,

Hiya Gail

I finished my chemo on 8th Aug 07 and my hair also came back grey/black! By mid November I could live with it no longer, so contacted my hairdresser. She did some research and said that as long as I had a patch test (behind the ears), then she was happy to do it. She used the same dye that I had before, but a lower % (does that make sense?). It turned out fine and I’ve had it ‘touched up’ twice since (even had highlights in!). I, personally, wouldn’t use a home one and would speak to your hairdresser first.

Good luck.

Hi Gail I finished chemo last July and now my hair has come back great I couloured mine with nice and easy I have always used that it took great. I was at the hairdressers last Saturday for a cut and blow dry and she said to me gosh your hair is a lovely colour. I am very pleased with it It has even come back thicker it did come back 3 different colours it was horrible but now I am back to my lovely blonde I hope whatever you decide it looks lovely for you Love Linda xxxxxxxx

Nature Tint is a permanent herbal dye, sorbital and paraben free.I’ve been using it since my onc said I could dye my hair ten weeks after chemo ended! Luckily my hair came back thick and fast - but very grey! It’s a great hair product - I’d recommend it to anyone, and if like me your hair is very strong and dye resistant just use less of the developer and it covers beautifully. It’s also very natural looking.

This is all very good news. My hair was blonde but is growing back (2mm) black on the top and white at the sides.Thoughy I would have to spend the next year looking like a badger, or cruella deville!! Zoe x

Hi everyone,
I too have bought some nature tint from a local health food store and plan to use it this week. I was told by a chemo nurse that you can use a semi permanent after 12 weeks and a permanent after 6 months. As my hair has come in very grey ( I,m 39 ) I felt that would need a permanent for coverage so bought this herbal dye that contains no chemicals. Its not the cheapest around £8.99 but my hairdresser friend said she should be able to get three uses out of it by using a bowl to mix the solutions in and then using it again later.
Lots of love Andrea x

Hi everyone!
I finished chemo at the end of July '07. My hair returned - curly (very!!!), dark brown and quite white!!! As I was only 37 (38 now, boooo!!!) I really felt I had to continue with the colours!! I began with water based colours but ended up with very orange hair! I then progressed very quickly to my old favourite nice n easy! To be honest it has been absolutely fine and my friend who is a hairdresser says my hair is looking fab!! The curl has now gone, as I normally have a real short crop and I now feel normal!! Wooo hooo!!
Good luck with whatever you decide!
Love Janette xx

I had the cold cap during FEC chemo - didn’t lose my hair but it went rather thin on top. It didn’t grow at all during the 4 months of treatment, but when it did, came back very curly, and grey around the temples and sides. Took ages to grow and was bliss, as all I had to do was “wash ang go” - no hair driers or hot brushes. I had always coloured it myself, after a disastrous hair do in Spain when we lived there, and it went orange at a local hairdresser - they don’t know how to treat natural blond hair there!

After I finished chemo, I went back onto my usual colouring L’Oreal Recital (ash blonde) and even my hairdresser says she couldn’t do my colouring any better!

I don’t ever remember asking any of my doctors about my hair - I can’t think for one minute they would have been interested. Guess we all had bigger fish to fry at the time. I am still dyeing my hair each month and quite happy with it.

Liz.

does anyone know if tints of nature hairdye fades like other hairdyes?

Thanks everyone, I have taken your advice and gone to have a patch test! All being well I’ll be Ash blonde on the 4th April! Never been a blonde before so lets hope the old saying is true, and that blondes really do have more fun! Good luck and best wishes
