When will my Periods return??

Hi

I started FEC in March and had 6 sessions, the last one was 30th June.

I used to be on the Depoprovera injection and very rarely had periods. If not for the BC treatment I would have been due a top-up in Mid April. Normally if I missed a top-up injection I would have a period about a week after my top-up should have been due, but of course by Mid April I had already had 2 doses of FEC and I know people’s periods tend to stop during this sort of chemo.

I have still not had a period and I wondered how long it might be til they should come back? I realise every woman is different but just wanted to ask, hope nobody minds.

I have heard that chemo can sometimes bring about an early menopause but I am not having any menopause symptoms that I know of.

FTR I am practising safe sex as I do not want to assume I am still infertile, and there is no chance that I am pregnant. But I just want my menstrual cycle to return to “normal” so that I can go back to my GP to discuss my future contraception, as I am considering sterilisation if it does not pose any increased risk to any types of cancer. Or should I just go see him right now?

if you are considering getting sterilised then I would say that you are as well to go see the Gp now and get the ball rolling as it were.

You don’t say how old you are. I was 44 at dx, my periods stopped during chemo, and I believe I am now in an early menopause (18 months on from dx). A friend was 40 at dx, and her periods never stopped.

Hi Clarabel

I am now 1 yr post dx and had chemo from July till Nov last year - my periods stopped in chemo 2 or 3 and its now 43 weeks since my last one. I am now 40 and have regular hot flushes. Had gp today and she has taken bloods for hormone levels, altho she says they can go up and down anyway. They say periods could still return up to a year or so after chemo but the closer you are to natural menopause the less likely they are to return. I’m really not bothered about them returning but would be worried about osteoporosis if I am in the menopause.

hi, thanks for your replies so far. I am 34 and a half

I don’t care about not having periods OR if I get early menopause my main concern is that the absence of periods does not necessarily mean I am not fertile, the last thing I want is a baby so if I am not permanently infertile from the chemo I want something done about it and I do not want to go back to hormonal contraception - whilst my BC was not hormone receptive who is to say that going back on Depo won’t increase my risk of getting hormone receptive BC in the future. I think I will speak to my GP sooner rather than later, I have begun having bad dreams about an unwanted pregnancy. I hate the barrier or withdrawal methods of birth control, I want to be able to relax when I’m enjoying myself with my partner, and we are in a stable relationship where we have both been screened for STIs and are both adamant we won’t want children so I think I will chat to my GP and explore my options and weigh up pros and cons of whatever options there are.
