Where to go in the UK for shopping etc except London

Hi!

If everything goes as planned , my friend and I ( both 54) want to go to the UK for an oval weekend in Febr. We have both been to London several times and would like to go somewhere different.

We would like to stay at a nice hotel, go shopping (there has to be at least one M&S), have some lovely meals and perhaps see a show.

My friend does not have cancer, but struggles with other health issues and cannot walk for hours.

We have been talking about going to Brighton or Manchester, but I am sure there are other nice places as well, which are not too far from an international airport.

Suggestions will be most welcome.

Hi Cava
Liverpool as Capital of Culture should spring to mind, and as a Liverpool girl I can reccomend it

But Liverpool has a HUGE spider living there at the moment!

I suggest Canterbury. Only an hour or so away from Gatwick airport.

Enjoy wherever you go Cava.

Spider is moving on,does not leave insects behind, so feel free to visit one and all

Sorry, but am a bit confused right now. One HUGE spider? Moving on? Somebody please explain.

Its a mechanical spider, designed by a french man,and its been moving about the city over the last week, but it is huge, and roads have been closed

Cornwall fly into Newquay no spiders!

thanks maryfrod. Now I will have i good nights’ sleep.

other than spiders, its a fantastic city, as I am sure you know xx

Hi

I would suggest Newcastle, as I believe you are coming from Norway? (I believe you can take the ferry…) I’ve never been, but everyone raves about the shops and the Metro Centre, plus there’s the Baltic Exchange, etc, etc

Glasgow and Edinburgh are both very good for shopping, nice hotels and also plenty of entertainment. Both have international airports.

Chester is wonderful and convenient for both Liverpool and Manchester.I has a huge M&S with two stores facing each other it also has a historic shopping centre, the Rows, which was medieval. There are some superb hotels and lovely countryside in easy reach.Enjoy,Vx

BRIGHTON, I have quite a few friends down there, and to me it’s London by the sea. There is the coast, lots of hotels, lots of the main shops, and also the lanes which are famous for antiques and general browsing. I adore Brighton and would love to live there one day! Off there this weekend to house sit for a friend for four days, can’t wait!!

hi all lovely ladies

and thank you for your wonderful suggestions. I will discuss them with my friend.

jules, you suggested Brighton. If we go there, I will probably take a trip to Worthing to have a stroll down Memory Lane. I spent 6 weeks there, at the age of 18, living with a local family, . I lost my heart to the son in this family, a handsome, wonderful boy with the initials B.C. (Ironic, isn’t it? LOL)

I chose to go back to my Norwegian boyfriend, who has now been my OH for more than 30 years. But I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I had kept i touch with B.C. Perhaps I had known some of you in RL.

Now I have to pull myself together and get dinner startet.

Thanks again - and if you know a Worthing B.C. born in 1951, - Take good care of him. Please.

Love, cava

Awww cava what a romantic story.

Do you know the Goring/Ferring part of Worthing. There is a fantastic walk with sea one side and fields the other, with a couple of beach cafes on route for tasty snacks! Really is beautiful, infact I intend on retiring there when I am old and grey lol or Brighton! lol

Love Jules xx

If you are still looking at your options can i recommend Norwich. We have an international airport which is small and easy to access, excellent rail links to London, great shopping with a large M & S, H o F, Debenhams, BHS, John Lewis as well as Jarrolds which is a family owned department store and lots of designer and independant shops and a large city centre market that is open 6 days a week. Visitor attractions include two stunning cathedrals and a Norman castle and there are regular trains to the Norfolk Broads and the coast [North Norfolk is particularly beautiful].

There is also many theatres [the largest of which has just been refurbished] and restaurants and the city centre is surprisingly compact and easy to cover.

Where ever you choose to go have a great time.

Edinburgh is great, German Market, Winter Wonderland plus all the usual stuff, every thing is walk able Edinburgh is a very large village. Thes, Cinemas (2 Art housetypes, one of which I work in)
Or to make more time for socialising jut go to 24hr asda and tesco.

Hi cava

Just been to chester, it has all the old things people think of for England. I am from manchester and that is only 38 miles away and Liverpool is even nearer both great cities… but if you could make it too edinburgh thats just amazing i love it there.

Hi,

Gun Wharf in Portsmouth is great. Loads of lovely places to eat. Check out their web site.
