Why do we get Steroids?

LAdies i found myself as high as a kite on steroids and then two days later i crashed so badly i could barely lift my arms to eat.

My mum had to have my babies for two days which i cant face happening again.

Why are we given steroids? Is it just for anti sickness?
Anyone not having them with their chemo?

thanks a lot
Sue

Hi Sue,
It depends on what chemo you’re getting? Normally the ones given with FEC and for 3 days after are to help with the anti sickness. If this is you and you are not suffering from bad nausea and sickness then I would have a word with hospital and explain to them your SE’s and they might tell you to cut them down. I was told I could trail them off gently if I wanted to avoid any “crash”
If you are on a Taxotere then they are to stop you having a serious allergic reaction to the ingredients(creamafore) which are mixed with the chemo to allow it to mix in your blood stream, so these ones are very important… These were the two chemo’s I was on so I can’t comment on any other.

Hope this helps

Hello there i didnt need the steriods because i take a stomach capsule for a mild complaint its called omeprazole 20mg so the doc said i didnt need the steriods, I noticed another person on here last week mention them and saying they were good, maybe its worth having a word with your doc-oncologist
bye for now

Thanks ladies. I didnt get any sickness at all so perhaps i can get a reduced dose.

Am getting FEC chemo feemac. 8 bloody doses…bah

I’m on E- CMF chemo and I have found that I can take the full dose of dexamethasone on the day of chemo, then cut it down on a 3, 2, 1 basis over the next 3 days and that avoids the crash.

Actually on CMF I go 4, 2, 1 as the nausea isn’t so bad.

Gennie will give the 4,2 1 thing a try i think as got a wedding and cant have that crash again…hideous

thanks ladies
