Hi and help. How is a wig suppose to feel when you have it on? Mine was not comfortable! Trouble is it was the style I liked so I am feeling really dissapointed and worried that I will not find a suitable one. I did go to a very reputable hairdressers where they specialise in ‘My New Hair’ by Trevor Sorbie. Can anybody recommend a good supplier of wigs, I live in the Gloucestershire area.
Changing the subject - can you wear contact lenses whilst having chemo treatment? I will be starting chemo in July (not sure what date yet). My chemo will be combined with Herceptin at the same time.
I have found this website a god send since my diagnosis.
I have worn a wig since I lost my hair through treatment last November and I have to say it does take some getting used to. However, I now have my second wig and I almost forget it is there. I think when you try it on whilst you have hair it is not comfortable and does not feel secure due to the hair underneath. I would suggest you go back to the supplier and ask them to adjust it for you as I assume it can be adjusted at the back.
Re. contact lenses, I personally don’t know so hopefully someone else will reply to you re. that. however the chemo did dry my eyes on occasion and made them very weepy at other times. Though we are all so different so I guess you will need to see how, and if, it affects you. Good luck with it - you can do. I did! And am so glad and relieved to be at the other side. Take care. J.
Mine wasn’t comfortable until I got used to it - and TBH it was much more comfortable once I tightened it up and after my hair fell off!
Glasses and wig is a tough combo though. I never got the hang of that so I did wear contacts on wig days. Your eyes will likely get dry so you can’t wear them all day every day - I went for a ‘one day on one day off’ approach! And I tended not to bother at all during week one after treatment.
Mine is actually my NHS wig, but it is a Trendco one!!
This dratted website! Lost my comments! I wore my lenses throughout til my eyelashes fell out and they got a bit sore and itchy. The wig thing is odd as we’re not used to it! I used to wonder how Lily Savage coped! Not sure if it helps but I did dust my head with baby powder before putting the wig on. It was definitely comfier when I was bald as opposed to wearing it with the net cap when I had a few wisps! I wish I’d got a short one as I think it would have been easier than the long one I chose! Xx
Trendco are really good and are recommended by Trevor Sorbie. I got a fab wig - but haven’t worn it yet and too scared to put it on my hair in case it pulls it all out!!
Your closest one would be Birmingham, but they also do online and catalogue ordering (but not sure about returns if you’re not happy, you’d need to check with them).
If you do decide to go and see them, be sure to make an appointment. They really look after you and it’s like being in a hairdresser. I had my own room with comfy chair and mirror and they brought lots of different styles and colours for me to try. I think I had an hour’s appointment, so it was very relaxed.
I think different wigs have different bases and some are more comfy than others.

EDIT: PS - it’s not the pink wig in my profile pic, by the way!! Although if you like that look, you can get that for a couple of quid from a fancy dress shop!!
Thank you all for your helpful comments. Will go back to hairdressers and try again, maybe I was expecting to much! Have ordered some scarves just in case but not really sure if I am a scarve person!
Hoping my contacts will be ok haven’t worn glasses for years! just vanity,but I am begining to think vanity will be a thing of the past once chemo starts. Chemo and all the side effects is a scarey process and sometimes think I will never cope, have to keep reminding myself that as a lot of ladies have said on this webside it is doable and thats reassurring.
my wig was by wills wigs and an appointment was arranged through hospital beautiful wig but never worn just felt too consious so just had headscarves and now inch long hair, i plan to sell it and give money to hospital as i got it with my script from them with all intention of wearing it loads x
Although I had a wig from the start I struggled with the mind set that wigs are not natural. I used scaves and buffs for some time. Then one day I decided to try the wig again and maybe because I had got used to having something on my head I got on better with it.
My wig was really inexpensive from a wig franchise in a local department store. I took it to my hairdresser who was trained in cutting wigs and he made it ‘mine’.
Just popped back to to say I actually had a new wig cut in yesterday - a VERY CHEAP real hair one. It looked awful out of the packet but now look just GREAT. My own (real hair) hairdresser did it this time, and it worked really well. She has been cutting my hair for 10 years so she knew what I wanted from it - she realised straight away that my issue with the original wig was that it was too high on the crown and therefore a bit ‘big’ for me.
I LOVE it. Maybe easier to love a wig if you have been bald for over 3 mths now, but worth mentioning here.
I do use a lot of hats and scarves as well though, I don’t use a wig to hide myself completely, and I’m not su they are ever ‘that good’, I use them to look hairy and feel better about myself.
There is some FAB wig (and make-up advice) on a blog a fellow BC suffer is currently writing. She is finished with chemo now so you will need to look at her older posts.
You can contact your local Toni and Guy salon, they have gone in with Macmillan to provide help with picking and cutting a wig, also how to look after your hair post chemo. My local Toni and Guys in Lakeside, Essex has been brilliant.
i have 8 wigs and tbh i carnt ware any all day few hours and thats it for me before hair came out it was 5 mins and no more now i find it better with a cap under it but in this heat (well the heat we did have)it gets too hot , i wear glasses all the time and yes it can feel funny with them on but it gets better the more you wear yr wig

i had my wig from wils wigs in bromsgrove as i live there. to be honest i wasnt hapy with them. i had to go back 3 times to have it altered. mind u they said that it fitted perfect. so it was prob just me not being able to adjust.
i also had the mind set that its false hair and why should i try and cover up what was happening to me. however it wasnt always the time and place to have no hair!! so i tried a wig liner but that was too hot. so at certain events i grinned and bared it. but all the other time i went comando , hats, buffs and scarves. xxx

i would have to agree with everyone who has said their wig feels more comfortable once their own hair had come off.
I had my wig from Trendco in Birmingham, it is a chocolate brown bob with frost hi-lites, I have had several comments on how nice my hair looks lol, it does take a while to get used to, almost like a pair of shoes, you try it on and its either comfy or not, regardless of the style, I wear a bandanna or a scarf in the house, I personally couldnt go out in public without my wig, my children have also asked me not to pick them up from school without my hair, which is totally understandable,
someone told me the other day that once your hair starts growing back on leave your wig etc off as much as possible to encourage your own hair to grow.
Keep trying different wigs until you find a comfy one, and try not to be disheartened I must have tried 40 on until I found the one I felt comfortable in,

I got my wig from Wills Wigs in Bromsgrove too. Didn’t think I’d be able to put up with it at first but once washed with fabric conditioner it was far more comfortable. Asked for something similar to my own hair and actually chose the first one I tried on. Dark brown bob with highlights. Was very pleased with it, got lots of compliments and many people didn’t even realize it was a wig!
