Hi. i will be starting chemotherapy in 2 weeks time and I have very long hair which I would like to use to create a wig. Ive heard that the hair has to be cut in a particular way to be made into a wig - but I’m not sure whether this is the case. Has anyone experienced this or used their own hair to be made into a wig ?
Also can I go to any hairdresser or a specially trained one ?
I have no personal experience of wigs but Googled and found this:
“Generally speaking, the collection of human hair to be made into wigs is a very specialized area and there are currently only around 12 people in the UK who specialise in this. If your hair is more than shoulder length, long, in very good condition, and you have plenty of it, then you may like to ask if your hair could be made into a wig. But most of the time the answer will be ‘no’ and even if it is a ‘yes’ then it would take at least 10 weeks to make and would be very expensive.”
Thank you Jo! I’m going to make an appointment with headstrong.
Thank you chascat - several others have suggested the Princess charity to donate hair and I’m going to do that…hopefully they will accept my hair! X
