WLE- how many needed repeat surgery?

Hey. Just wondering before i get my results on tuesday 19th, how many of you had a WLE and needed further surgery due to insufficent margins?

Is it common?

My consultant said if mine are not clear i would need a mastectomy and its playing on my mine…unsurprisingly!

I was diagnosed with DCIS. I had a WLE but unfortunately they didn’t get clear margins so I needed another. I’m waiting for my results due 20th May. The consultant also said to me that if this does not show clear margins then I will need a mastectomy.

Apparantly about 20% of WLE’s don’t get clear margins. Fingers crossed that you are noe of the 80% that do!

Looks like you’re dealing with this with young children too. I’ve got two little ones-ages 4 and 19 months.

Hi Evie, I had WLE and ANC in November 08. As they didn’t get enough clear margins - 4 were okay I think but 2 weren’t, I had re-excision 3 weeks later which was successful. I did say to my surgeon that if they needed to take the breast off they should, but she said no, it really wasn’t necessary. I think it depends on tumour size, grade and actual location of tumour. HI,Evie i had further WLE on monday 11.05 so i am waiting for resoults in 2 weeks time ,second time was not bad i didnt had drain and i went home same day…i hope you will have clean margins …krisid

Have horrible feeling i will need more surgery just from the way the consultant said i would need a mastectomy when previously he was dead against me opting for it.
Tuesday will tell me all!

With a 9mth old and a 2 yr old recovery time for me is really hard and needs to be fast!

Hi Evie, I had 2nd WLE on 1st May, home by 2pm same day! Much easier 2nd time as 1st time had lymph nodes removed. My surgeon did say he thought it would be fine this time but sometimes they have to do a 3rd!!! I told him if that happens to take the lot next time and be done with it!!! Hope it all goes well for you, i get results tomorrow!

Hi Evie,
I had WLE and SNB in March and the margin was only 1mm so when I had to have axillary clearance in April the surgeon did further surgery to the breast to increase the margin. My results last week were that the nodes were clear (thank God) and that the margin was now increased and no cells had been found in the further excision.
If you need a little more wider excision to get a clearer margin I would try to stay positive that the second op will be relatively easy to deal with and mastectomy can be avoided.

i had a WLE in may 06 for invasive tumour and had to go in 3 weeks later for further excision due to high grade dcis in the margins.

Thats what i feared! It really upset my little girl and she hated seeing the dressing and kept shouting “off, off”!

fingers crossed it wont happen…
Seems me you Freddie are quite similar with little ones and what the Dr said!

Hi

I know what you mean about the little ones not liking it!

I had to have my dressing re done a couple of times by the nurse at the doctor’s. My daughter couldn’t bear the nurse going anywhere near me and was being very protective!!

Try not to worry too much if you do need a second WLE though. Mine wasn’t too bad and probably a bit easier the second time as I knew what to expect.
