Hi everyone,
this is just a sound off. I am the main bread winner and am still working full time to make ends meet. I had to change my job to a sedentary one when diagnosed with spinal bone mets.(although I am still very active ) This meant a drop in salary which has had huge financial implications. I no life insurance or mortgage protection having cancer as a pre existing condition but will have ill health retirement pay out but that is a way off yet. I reallycan’t imagine being able to reduce my working hours and support my family and pay mortgage etc. I know there are no answers to this but when people tell me how they would stop work in my situation or travel the world ,it sometimes just isn’t feasible. I would like to be able to afford to take my family on holiday. Given the present financial climate there must be many of us in the same situation. We get cancer within our normal life situations. Wondering if anyone else feels the same ? Xxx
Hi Angelina,
My situation is different from yours. I am on remission from the cancer I suffer 6 years ago but, as result of all the treatments I cannot work ft and, my work capabilities are restricted. I am also strugelling financially and that is why I work more hours that the ones I can really make. I don’t know if Macmillan, CAB, the Equality and Right Commision could provide you with any advice on benefits or even give you financial help but, it may be worth trying.
Good luck

Hi Angelina,
Do you get DLA? Which may help take some of the pressure off you. It’s not means tested and you can still work while getting it. I don’t know the benefit system but could you get help with paying your mortage if you reduce yours hours and got family working tax credits.
I think it might well be worth talking to someone in the know even phoning the benefits advice plus the ones happy has suggested? There are also charity like the willow foundation who funded trips I think its between 16 - 40 that may be worth looking into.
I really hope you find some useful information which is benefical to you and your family. I know I got early retirement due to ill health as I just could continue working in s stressful environment where I was always on the go.
Take care
Love
Chris xx
Do get in touch with the Willow Foundation. They may be the answer to your prayers for a holiday but not more money!
I do hope MacMillan can help you claim all your benefits to try and increase your income in any way possible…
I really do feel for you. What an awful situation for you…
You definitely don’t need this extra burden. Maybe start with phoning the forum here to help you negotiate where you go next. Good luck and if you can let us know how you fare we’d be delighted to hear from you.

Hi, I’m nearly in the same boat as you. I’ve mets in my spine that have caused spinal compression, so my mobility is very poor.
Also the main bread winner - hower have no children to worry about - just mortgage and other bills,
I’m on full sick pay at the moment - so can pay the bills.
I too have no insuraance to cover the mortage and if I loose my job there will not be any pay out.
We dont qualivey for top up benifits as my hubby has a pension from the railway.
He had 4 strokes 7 years ago and lost his job - retired through ill health.
My friend tell me I should put my health first and relax and enjoy live. Not easy to do if we end up home less.
I hope you manage to get your income increased .
Take care Glo
