Working with horses

Is anyone working with horses and riding while undergoing chemo? I’m due to start chemo next week and want to know if I’ll be up to riding 2 horses and mucking out 6 horses? I’m told my chemo will be a high dose.

Hi,
I think you might have to ask advice on this. When I had my op, they asked a lot about working with horses as it increases your risk with MRSA. Not sure if that is just for operations though. You will have to be so careful with even tiny cuts let alone any other bugs that might be about from wild animals. I was not allowed to go into my school at all because of the risk of bugs, but that is people!!!
It is very individual but I think that sounds too much physical work, particularly when your blood counts drop each time. I couldn’t get off the sofa for whole weekends on epi but everyone is different and age has a lot to do with it too.
Lots of luck and I hope it goes really well for you

I certainly couldnt have done it and I would expect the risk of infection would be high.I hope your treatment goes well.Good Luckxx

Hi, I did 3 FEC/3 Taxotere and managed - just - to muck out etc three most of the time ok. On tax tho it was harder, and at least one week in three had to have help! I found it actually kept me going, as you have to get the horses done dont you, whatever else is happening. Didnt ride tho. Good luck!

Hi i’d be keen to know if you manage to ride as I’m hoping to carry on throughout my chemo which is due to start in the next 3 weeks - I figured it would be a bit of motivation not to mention fresh air so I will be devastated if I can’t.

Just to let you know that I continued riding and mucking out throughout 4 doses of FEC this summer(stopped as diagnosed with liver Mets but thats another story) I continued to compete too, eventing, but only went to events at the end of the three week cycle as I was told it wouldn’t be a good idea to break anything while my immunity was low. It really helped me during chemo to have something else to focus on!

HI, well I too have horses and also judge at major events throught the summer, I am on Epi/cmf and have had the second dose of Epi last week, I have not managed to ride but that has mostly been due the awful weather we have had as mine are living out, but it does do you good to get out in the fresh air, but beware of overdoing it, if I do too much I know about it the next day. I find thatI can move fences, hay bales etc OK and I am looking forward to getting back in the saddle I hope next month. Just take it easy and listen to your body I have found to be the best way, its no good trying to just carry on as normal you do get tired after treatment, but animals have that strange way of giving you a boost when you are with them, and I have every intentions of carrying on my judging commitments throughtout the summer, it may just be that other half is forced to come with me to share driving. Good luck to you all, looking forward to spring.
