I am 43 (2 daughters ages 8 and 10 and haven’t told them yet)and was recently diagnosed with IDC stage 2, it was 2 weeks ago that I picked up. There are also some Micro calcification and I was told they are going to compare these to last mammogram in Aug 2010 but this is all taking so long. I was on a 10 year screening program because my mother was diagnosed at 41 and died at 43, her Aunt died at 43 and her mother (my grandmother died at 56) all breast cancer. The next appointment is 23/5/11 and I am struggling with the waiting times and very anxious. Because of my family history I am thinking that I would like a mastectomy (and am even considering a double) I have small breasts anyway. But am I being too drastic. My sister says my mother was triple negative and it was a very aggressive cancer. I am scared that I am going to go in there Monday and be told that I have to wait for the outcome of the mammogram comparison etc. or be referred for another specialised biopsy and that at the end of the day I just want the cancer cut out. Does anyone have these experience?, has any opted for a double mastectomy? What should I expect in terms of treatment since I was diagnosed 2 weeks ago? Any advise or help would be so appreciated. I am so scarred.

Hi raemarie,
Firstly, sorry you had to join our club ![]()
I have a friend who’s ex in laws had it in their family with similar situation as yours. There were six girls and I know that at least three of them had preventative surgery; they are all now fine, living breast free and in their mid forties.
Hope this helps… and wishing you all the best.
