worried :(

Hi, I’m 37 and recently found a lump in my breast, went to the doctors and she said that yes there was one and that there were two in the other breast as well, she refered me to the breast clinic and i had my mammogram last monday (10th may) and my appointment is this wednesday (19th May). I was just wondering, if they had found anything suspicious on my mammogram would they have called me back to clinic sooner, i am trying to tell myself everything will be fine but its not really working :frowning: also if there are lumps in both breasts does that make it more likely to be something benign?

Cheers, Justine

Hi Justine,

The length of time between appointments does vary a lot in different parts of the country. It doesn’t mean anything - good or bad. This is a very stressful time - I remember it well. I didn’t tell anyone except my husband and he just kept telling me not to worry as it it was probably benign, but I found the best thing was to try and understand a bit about what would happen if it was bad news. The fear of the unknown is worse I think. The good news is that, even if it is bad news, there is so much that they can do to treat it. You’ll find plenty of evidence of that on this site. I was dx last October and am now through all my treatment and back at work.

In the meantime, try not to worry - easy to say and difficult to do, I know. Do let us know what happens and you’ll find lots of support on these forums.

Take care and fingers crossed for you!

Justine - I know it depends on the hospital but, when I was diagnosed, I was given a scan and biopsy immediately after my mammogram, as they obviously had suspicions.

Several years before,I had fluid-filled cysts in the other breast, which they were able to drain, also on the day. Try not to assume the worst - difficult, I know.

Good luck.

Hi Justine,

Another thought - have they done an ultrasound on you yet? Younger women have denser breast tissue and sometimes things don’t show up on a mammogram. I was 46 at dx and my clearly palpable lump couldn’t be seen on the mammo. You may find that they have a few more tests to do before they can definitively say whether your lumps are benign.

I really hope you don’t have to wait much longer. I had 4 visits to the clinic over nearly 2 weeks before they confirmed it was bc. Twice I thought I’d get a result, but they wanted another test. I think there are some places where they can do all the tests in one day and even give you the result before you leave, but not where I live unfortunately. Keep it in perspective though - the waiting doesn’t always mean bad news - 8 out of 9 people get good news.

no i have only had a mammogram, they do ur mammogram where i live (south wales) the week before ur appointment at the breast clinic so the consultant can look at them before you come, thats why iv been (wishful) thinking they havnt seen anything suspicious because they havnt contacted me to come sooner. the leaflet iv had about the breast clinic says any tests you have at clinic you have to come back for the results the following monday but fingers crossed i wont need any as like most im not very good with needles. im still trying to convince myself il be one of the lucky ones, there is no family history, i had my children young and i breast fed them all so fingers crossed, still a massive worry though, i am a single parent of three and dont no how i would cope if it is bad news :frowning: thanks for your comments xxxxx
