Wound healing issues

I’m post breast conserving surgery, had re excision about 7 weeks ago, developed a stitch sinus 10 days ago, which opened up a bit more so went to seeBC nurses at the hospital, they said no infection and very superficial, put iodine dressing on, unfortunately two hrs later at radiotherapy planning they took it off and as a new dressing wasn’t available then put that one back on. I tried the next day to get a replacement, ended up with a the district nurse putting a plain dressing on then the next they took it off again and put another iodine one on. By this point it looked virtually healed, I almost said it looks ok now and was a bit worried about the various dressings going on and coming off. Unfortunately since that last dressing was put on it has deteriorated , it hasn’t looked infected previously, but yesterday for the first time it was very sore again and open again and drained some pus and some blood, this was completely different to the slightly blood stained clear fluid coming out in very small amonts previously. I already have another appointment to have this checked tomorrow, it was booked when it was seen last week. My radiotherapy is due to start on Friday, I have no idea if this can go ahead now? Plus am I going to need antibiotics for this now? I know there is a reluctance t9 give antibiotics unless really needed, does this now qualify as needing them? What other dressing can be used to help this now? It’s about a 3/4 cm open along the scar line .

Is it ok to wait till tomorrow, I don’t have any systemic symptoms of sepsis, or should I try and get it seen somewhere, so hard to know what to do. Is there any hence it could heal and radiotherapy commence on Friday?

Hi @bee33 as it is a public holiday today, the nurses won’t be able to answer your questions until tomorrow, by which time you will be heading to your appointment. I completely understand your concern so would it help to call 111, and get some advice from the NHS number for non-emergencies? Hopefully you’ll get the answers you want from your appointment tomorrow but I’m sure the BC Now nurses will respond as soon as they can.

Hi, I had something very similar happen to me with nipple wound opening up with pus after 3days of radiation- I was given a cream to apply called Flaminol . It was miracle stuff and sorted the problem in days.

Hi bee33,

Thank you for posting.

It sounds like the symptoms you describe could be a sign of infection. As @Tili has said, it’s important to get this looked at as soon as possible and it’s good to hear you have an appointment with your team today to have this checked. Sometimes radiotherapy may need to be delayed as it is important for the wound to be fully healed before starting.

Having healing complications after surgery can be a worrying time and it’s understandable that you’d like to know if antibiotics or special dressings or a cream such as the one @drcb00 has mentioned, may be helpful. Your treatment team will be best placed to answer this for you, once they have assessed the scar. They can also let you know if radiotherapy will be able to go ahead as planned on Friday.
