You could wear it with a jacket!!

If one more assistant shows me a backless strapless frock, adding, “you can always wear it with the jacket/shawl/shrug”, I will scream! I am getting married in June, had R mastectomy 3 years ago after DCIS dx, no recon, and a high dent. Are there any exotic/sexy/dramatic/glamorous evening type gowns out there that I can wear, without looking like the Queen Mother? I might be 55, but I am the Bride, not the Bride’s Mother. Perhaps we all ought to start nagging manufacturers/designers: after all, even without breast surgery, there are lots of us, of any age, who’s busts and upper arms are not their best feature. I even tried a 50s plus catalogue, but they were just as bad, and if their models were over 50 I’d like to know what they were taking, because it’s certainly more than Omega 3!
Sorry to rant, three years down the line I should have come to terms with this by now, but every so often it gets to me. It isn’t just vanity (Honest) it’s about leading a normal life.
(Not sure if this is the right forum for this, so if Moderator wishes to shift it elsewhere, feel free.)

Hi SUe, first of all congratulations on getting married again. I did the same in my 50’s and ended up wearing a white trouser suit with a very pretty sequined white/pink short sleeved top underneath. I’ve kept the jacket on for the wedding (it was March and very cold) and then took the jacket off for the evening party. I did try several dresses, but they would not have been really suitable for a very small register office wedding and the ‘bra’ problem was getting to me as well. You could also try a catalogue like Kaleidoscope, they always carry a range of formal wear, even in the summer, and they offer anything from strappy to more covered up. Wallis is another shop that carries formal wear , even in the summer. They have aome very pretty lacy dresses at the moment - sort of 20’s style, with litlle sleeves etc. Hope you can find something and very best of luck.

Oh Sue, you’ve made me laugh with the “omega 3” bit xxxxxxxxxx have you looked in John Lewis’s? i noticed that they had some nice high necked long evening dresses in, with matching balero jackets, but i am sure if you knew anyone handy with adjustments that you wouldn’t have to worry about it being backless, also, if you can sew a pocket into a bra, well, why not a dress? i think you can also get these bra cups that are kind of stick on, they don’t have any straps, hopes this helps, and yes, we really do need to get some campaigning going for women like us xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Ladies, thanks for comments and suggestions. I’m going shopping with my sister in a couple of weeks, and have been assured by the shop in question hey have a good range. Did find one on the Net that I loved, but at a mere £1200 I thought better of it…didn’t dare ask how much the hat was! And to make this worse, I really need two outfits as the wedding is on the Friday and the party on the Saturday. We live in a village where we know everyone, and have friends and family coming from far and wide, so neither is a small do. We must be mad!

have you considered a stick on prosthesis? Amoena do them. Its too soon after surgery for me to have one but they look good…that way maybe you could go for someting strapless if you wanted too. I think they are about £115, but it might be a good nvestment if it means you can choose from a wider range and/ or feel a bit more confident! Enjoy all the shopping & congatulations!!
Mand

Hi Mand,
Yes, I had thought of a stick-on one, I did try them when I got my last boob, but they only do one shape, and it’s nothing like my real one. Also, I do have this problem of the high dent, which I am probably more aware of than anyone else! If all else fails its back to the sewing machine, but I’m not giving up yet.
Mind you, compared with some of the other postings here, I think I should be so lucky if the only problem in my life is finding a frock!!
When I eventually find one, I’ll have to post the shop name/range here so everyone else knows where to look…perhaps we could have a shopping list site, where we could post details of good tops and dresses etc, and sympathetic assistants.
Sue.

Kylie MInogue looked gloriously sexy on Jools Holland’s New Year show…and her high dent was there to see for those of us looking. Sexy comes in many different ways which don’t include the Queen Mother and her relatives.

Hope the frock and the wedding go well.

Jane

Hi, Sue,
Congratulations on your wedding!

If it’s any help, I got my wedding dress from an online gothic clothing store, (edited by moderator) they have lots of lovely wedding-y things and also have a couture service. My dress was purple crushed velvet!

I think Debenhams and Monsoon are also good haunts for seeking wedding dresses (edited by moderator) and thought the little boleros they had there were nice too.

Let us know how you get on!
Ann

Hi girls,
Loved the Gothic ones, have always been a frustrated Goth at heart! Might still be a bit low; missed Kylie on the telly, perhaps I should just ignore the dent and buy what fits the boob.
I’ll let you know what I find, thanks, Sue.

Oops, sorry Jo. Will try to behave, just a bit overenthusiastic!

Silversue, do pm me if you want.

Ann
