Breast clinic appointment within 2 weeks.

Hi,

i found a lump last week and went to the doctor. She has referred me to the breast clinic, the appointment is Monday.

I’ve had a letter today confirming the time and date but it doesn’t say what they will do or how long it will take but it does say it’s breast surgery clinic. ?

i’m very anxious as it’s all unknown to me. I’m 47 and not had a mammogram before.

Is the breast surgery clinic the right one just for tests ? Could I be there all day ? Is there anything I should wear In particular?

Sorry to be a worry guts ?

Hi loube ?wear top and trousers/leggings, they will give you a gown to change into anyway but you keep trousers/leggings on. Everyone has this when having check up. It’s good your doctor is being cautious and sending you to be checked out with team ? you will probably have an mri scan 1st which is bit of gel on then they scan you like they do when pregnant, you’ll then probably have mammogram, they position you on the machine, all pain free ?some units will also do a biopsy. Please use the ask the nurse facility on here and the someone like me option in here :heart:Allow for about an hour or two this can take this time depending how busy your unit is. ?you’ve done exactly the right thing going to doctors and getting it checked out ?please keep off doctor google, it can send you ???and at this moment in time nothing is confirmed what your lump is. ??bcc and everyone on the threads are here ??rooting for you :heart:Hope this helps a bit ??:sparkles::sparkles:Shi xx

Hi Loube,

Usually a leaflet is included with the referral letter.

Firstly, well done for being proactive, seeing your GP and getting the referral so promptly.

There are many causes of breast lumps, so try not to worry too much.

When I was referred due to finding a lump when in my early 40’s,  I first saw the specialist breast surgeon who physically checked the lump and around under the armpits. Hence best to wear a separate top and skirt/trousers. If you feel more comfortable you can request a chaperone.

I then went directly to the x-ray department where they did the mammogram.  They then did an ultrasound scan over the breasts. If they think the lump needs further investigation they do a needle biopsy of tissue from the lump area, guided by the ultra sound. During my 5 years since diagnosis and follow on checkups I can say all the staff were very nice and understanding that none of us have necessarily chosen to be there!

I was then sent back to see the specialist, who let me know what they’d seen (in very simple terms) and if they needed to do the needle biopsy they will most likely say they need the results back before they can say what the lump is.

Please be aware some non cancerous masses can look like BC on the scan, so while it is natural to worry, do try not to panic. You will then be given a date, usually in one week’s time, to go back to see the specialist and get the results.

On the day of your referral don’t use deodorant (if it contains any metal it can affect the clarity of scans etc.) and wear trousers or skirt and top. Be prepared to have to wait awhile to see the specialist and wait again for the mammo etc, and then the specialist again (assuming all clinics work the same way…there may be some variations!).

Mammograms aren’t the most fun…some women don’t find them painful, some do. I do! So you might want to take a precautionary painkiller beforehand! If you do experience pain tell the radiographer so that they are aware.

If you want to take a friend you are free to do so. I went on my own and took someone along with me when my biopsy results were back a week later. You might want to take a book or practice mindfulness for distraction while waiting.

I hope Monday goes as well as possible for you. If you do have any further Q’s or feel the need to emote please do post again. There is always lots of help and support on this forum.
