First time on the forum. I'm a man with secondary breast cancer - diagnosed 4 years ago when I was 45. My lump was under the nipple about the size of a small pea and did give me pain which I was told cancer doesn't do - I have since learnt cancer can do whatever it likes!! Its really good you have been to your GP and getting this checked out. Happy to answer any questions you may have. Hopefully by now you have had your first appointment.
If not this is what happened for me. My hospital operated a one-stop clinic where you see doctor, then sent to next person etc all within a few hours. First appointment - examined by breast surgeon, then went for an ultrasound of my nipple (no mammogram) where under local anaesthetic (numbing injection around nipple) they removed a small sample of the lump for testing in the lab. Told probably not cancer but they would play safe and have the tests done on the sample and I would get results in 2 weeks. Results came back suspicious and they said they hadn't got enough tissue. Back for second biopsy under ultrasound - these results positive. Appointment made within a week to see breast surgeon to book a surgery date which was about a week later.
I attended the clinic with my wife. There were obviously quite a few women there at the same time. Nobody seemed to notice me - maybe they thought appointment was for my wife and I was with her? I noticed the women before me were asked to go and change and put on a gown etc before ultrasound whereas I was given option of just going into ultrasound room and talking my shirt off.
Let me know how you get on. Fingers crossed you are all clear.
You're bound to be nervous... that's probably why you don't feel very well! If it is flu its probably a coincidence... You've had a lot on your mind!
Like Seabreeze says...there are other reasons for lumps but it doesn't stop you worrying!
Hope everything goes well... everything is crossed! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Let us know how you get on x 💙💪🏻
Good that you spotted the lump and are getting it checked out. It is possible it may be some other harmless/non cancerous lump so try not to panic. I expect your stress levels have shot up since you are naturally worrying, and that is probably what is making you feel unwell (immunity tends to be slightly dented by stress), but do tell the medical team at your appointment on Friday.
When I was referred I first met the specialist, then had mammo and ultrasound, during which they did a core needle biopsy since they identified my lump as suspicious. I then saw the specialist again and was informed the results would be back in a week's time and a follow up appointment made for that time.
If you are going on your own you might want to think about any questions you may want to ask...and note them down as a prompt before you go to the clinic.
Try to calm yourself by whatever ways you reasonably can. There are many other causes of lumps besides bc.
Hoping Friday goes as well as possible for you. Do post again if you think any of us here can help.
Seabreeze (5 years on and doing ok!)
So, I have my first breast clinic appointment on Friday. Absolutely terrified, especially as I have to go alone. Also noq feel generally rubbish, like I'm coming down with flu out something. Is that normal?
You're welcome... And yes, please let me know how you get on x 💙
No wonder you're bricking it...it's a scary time and a whole new world! 💙
I'm assuming the process will be more or less the same for a man... apart from having a mammogram of course!
When I was recalled to the breast clinic I had another mammogram then the Doctor examined my breast, I had an ultra sound on my breast and under my arm... biopsies were taken from my lump and from my lymph nodes -I had a local anaesthetic for my breast biopsy but the lymph node biopsy was a bit like having blood taken...not really painful! I was then given an appointment to go back a week later for the results! 💔
Your appt should come through pretty quickly, altho i do appreciate that the waiting could drive you mad!
Everything is crossed that things work out okay for you! 💙
Hi all, I'm a 39yo man, and just discovered a lump in my right chest after a week of a painful nipple. Have been referred to breast clinic by the GP so just awaiting that. I am absolutely bricking it tho. What should I expect at the clinic? Any advice?
