Re: April 2018 Chemo Starters

Hi Lindabag I can empathise with you preparing for your daughters wedding! I had my chemo in Cyprus and then had to have a Db mx and I flew back to UK 16 days later full of clips and stitches, no hair, no eyebrows and no eye lashes but I was at my son’s wedding and I wouldn’t have had it any other way! The surgeon was not happy and he made me have the op before I left I begged him to delay it untilI came back but he said it needed doing or I would have to have 2 more sessions of chemo I had already had 8 as I had an aggressive cancer!
You shouldn’t be too bad with hair fall out it usually starts the 3rd week and the eyelashes and brows are much later than that.
Good luck at least the wedding is near the beginning of the cycle!

All things are possible if we strive to overcome!

I am now 4 years on!

Re: April 2018 Chemo Starters

Morning Ladies
Just a few tips I like to share before starting Chemo......the things I wish someone had told me!!
Firstly, it's not nearly as bad as you think. Just prepare yourself for the first week when you probably don't feel up to much. Stock up the fridge, prepare meals in advance if possible, get all the washing done etc. I'm not saying that you will feel ill, it's just that you may feel fatigue, and then you give yourself time to rest.
You will be given medication from your team for sickness. If you find they are not effective, tell them, as there are other things they can try.
At home, make sure you have some ibroprofen, constipation /diarrhea tablets and a thermometer.
Re. Hair loss..... Have a think about how you are going to deal with it. Unfortunately, you will lose some and it may be upsetting. Some try the cold cap and some use a wig. I resigned myself to losing my hair.... I had it cut short first and then when it started to shed, I used scarves. I did find it upsetting at first, but then got used to it. My hair did however grow back very quickly and had a full head of hair 4 months after treatment.
I hope this is useful and please ask if you have any specific questions and I will do my best!
Hugs

Re: April 2018 Chemo Starters

Hi Fiona

And welcome to the forum and the thread.

Honestly, chemo is not as bad as you think. For me, the surgery was much worse.

Generally, the first week of chemo is the hardest, in terms of fatigue and possible sickness, so prepare yourself for that first week. Stock up the fridge, prepare meals in advance if possible, get all the washing done etc. Basically allow yourself this time just to rest. I'm not saying that you will feel ill , just that you might not feel like doing much!

In terms of medication, the chemo team will give you something for the sickness. If you find they are not effective, tell them as there are others they can try. At home, stock up on ibroprofen, constipation/ diarrhea tablets , and a thermometer.

Have a think about how you're going to deal with hair loss. Sadly, it will happen and it maybe upsetting. Some give the cold cap ago. Some opt for wigs. Personally, I accepted that I was going to lose my hair and decided on scarves.

I did find it upsetting initially, but I then I got used to it. My hair grew back very quickly and after finishing chemo, I was able to remove the scarf 4 months later.

I hope this helps and I'm sure others will be along soon to add advice. Please come and chat whenever you want.

Hugs

Hi NoteRed

Yes the gscf injections can cause bone pain, and I too had it in my lower back. I found ibroprofen was very effective and the pain was short lived.

Re: April 2018 Chemo Starters

Hi all,
I haven't ever joined a forum before so I'm a real newbie with this.. With all of this really! I had a mastectomy and diep on 28th Feb and now scheduled to start chemo around 13 April. To be honest, I'm way more scared of this than I was about the surgery. My treatment will be EC and Paclitaxel. I'd welcome any advice or suggestions on how you're all preparing in general... for diet, hair loss, day to day! I hope you've all managed to enjoy a long weekend...

Re: April 2018 Chemo Starters

Thank you SueC 🙂 Today I had my second taxol treatment. And then gone to work so far all is fine
I asked my onc for my ear and he said that every little problem we had before chemo gets somehow "enlarged " with treatment- he suggested a little more cortisone. I also said him that I have little pain at my lower back and he said probably from the shot for the increase of the blood cells

Hello Bcd

And welcome to the thread.

The reality is that it is not as bad as you imagine. Do you know what you are having?

Just be prepared to take the first week very gently. You may find you get fatigue and you may get some sickness, but they can give you meds for that.

Best of luck for Friday, and please come and chat whenever you want.

Hugs

Re: April 2018 Chemo Starters

Hi Ladies, like Rosie i am also from April 2014 thread, i would like to wish you all the best with your chemo, the fear of it is worse than the reality in my experience, there is usually a medication the nurses can give you to alleviate any side effects, i found a very good anti nausea drug called Emend helped me , also ask for the mouthwash they can give you on free prescription which helps with sore mouth and ulcers. I had chemo before surgery  and it shrank the tumour significantly.

I hope you all find as much support off each other as we all have, the forum is a lovely , supportive place to find help and share worries and tips too!

Re: April 2018 Chemo Starters

Hi NoteRed
I've not heard of that one, but it certainly is possible. Chemo seems to attack us in many ways!
As you're going in tomorrow, I suggest you ask your Chemo team.
Hope it goes OK for you.

Re: April 2018 Chemo Starters

Hi all, I start chemo on 13th April (Friday 13th!! - good job I’m not superstitious!) Six cyckesnof FEC-T.

Had a single mastectomy on 12th Feb so it will be about eight weeks after surgery (everything was delayed because of the snow disrupting appointments).

Still on medication from nerve pain but otherwise doing well.

Thanks Sue,

First chemo is 3 weeks before wedding so hopefully just before major hair loss and immune system will have improved.  Thank you for the information.

Best wishes.

Re: April 2018 Chemo Starters

Hi Linda
And welcome to the thread.
My Chemo started 6 weeks after surgery, which I think is about average. It is suppose to start within 12 weeks.
Hair loss starts about 3 weeks in. I think the cold cap minimises this, but there is still some loss.
The difficult days of Chemo are the first week, when you really need to take it easy. The second week, be mindful of infections. So, in regards to the wedding, where does this fall for you? Ideally, the third week is best. So it may be worth considering the start date of your Chemo to accommodate this. Just a thought....
Anyway, please come and chat whenever you like and hopefully you can all support each other.

Re: April 2018 Chemo Starters

Hi,

I am due to start chemo (FEC/T) on 20th April and am really nervous as to what lies ahead. It has been more difficult as my daughter is getting married in May so arranging dates has been stressful. Will have a wig on standby in case too much hair falls out. Will try cold cap to minimise this. Out of interest how long after surgery are others starting chemo?

Hope all goes well for fellow newbies to Chemo.

Re: April 2018 Chemo Starters

Hi wildshell sorry that you find yourself having chemo for a second time!😕
I had chemo from the end of March 14 but joined the April 14 thread as most ladies in March were about to have their second treatment! Our thread is still going strong 4 years later we lost some ladies on the way but 5 of still communicate regularly and have meet ups! We have all helped each other on the journey and I am sure that more ladies will join you soon. As you have had chemo before you know what to expect all I would say is that there are more medications to help you with any possible side effects!
Good luck!

Hi wildshell

Welcome to the forum and the thread.

So sorry to read that its your second time. I suppose in terms of the chemo, you know what to expect. There must be positives and negatives to that.

I'm sure there will be others along soon, so that you can all support each other along the way.

Hope it goes OK on Wednesday, and please come and chat tomorrow whenever you need to.

Best wishes
