Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

Hello everyone,

I'm so sorry @Love running and @Linds7oaks that you've been feeling so low.  It's hard enough as it is managing all the physical aftershocks, without the emotional impact as well!  I don't have children, but have very dear nieces and nephews, and find it hard at times to manage their energy levels and questions - but I get lots of breaks from that.  Don't be too hard on yourselves; your children will have had lots of love and time with you from the years before so while they may be upset for a bit, they will be able to draw on your love and energy from before and this will help them find security and happiness through everything that is going on.  Thinking of you both and sending extra hugs.

@Coastal welcome to the group and hope tomorrow goes smoothly for you. Like you, it felt good to get started. I've just had my 2nd cycle of EC and so far it's gone better than the 1st cycle.  I feel more tired and I think also a bit more emotional (grumpier!), but no sickness, which is a huge bonus.  My consultant changed my anti-sickness meds and this has made all the difference.  😊

I am also taking Zolodronic Acid, and started this with my 2nd cycle.  Seemed to go fine and can't say I've had any side effects from it so far.

@Poacher65 hope your hair shaving wasn't too sad for you.  I felt a bit lost at first but in the end felt better for shaving my hair off.  Just don't like having a cold head (beanies are saving the day) and back of my neck.  My lovely friend bought me some super soft snoods that have been a blessing.  Just as well as this weekend the heating and hot water packed up in my house 🙄  Fortunately, I live near my dad's house so I've still been able to get the hot showers!

I went for a lovely walk this afternoon - nothing strenuous, just gently walking through some fields near my house with my hubby and dogs.  I felt almost "normal".

Taking it day by day and sending strength and hugs to everyone.  We will all get there 🌻

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

Hi everyone!

I'm a bit late to the May chemo "party" but my first dose is this Friday (28th), so I'll just make the cut. I've been reading through some of the posts and it sounds like this is going to be really useful over the next few months. So much support from everyone!

I'm 34 and will be starting 4 rounds of TC (adjuvant), finishing up at the very end of July. I'm quite nervous about it all but trying to stay positive for as long as possible. but I'm going to give the cold cap a whirl to see if I can stand it but if not, I'm not too terrified of temporarily losing my hair (though definitely more than uneasy about it). I've got a wig appointment next week and have bought some head covers just in case.

I've heard some great advice about drinking lots of water and making sure I can get lots of rest but if there's anyone else familiar with TC, it would be great to hear more tips.

It's great to have found this - I hope I'll be able to be helpful and supportive to others as well.

Warmest,

Bex

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

Hi Love Running

I hope it’s ok if I chat here in the may group too, I have had 3 cycles so far, I started end March. I have been very low and anxious and in a dark place about the future too. It’s really hard to get out of. My GP gave me medication for a few days which helped but I am going to ask about long term antidepressants as it’s getting worse and I need to not be at rock bottom to cope.

I know what you mean, it’s so hard to be there for your children. They deserve our time and love and I have less to give which makes me feel guilty and terrible.

Vulnerable and broken just about sums it up. I am probably not helping but at least you know you’re not alone.

That sounds so hard @Love running 💐 So difficult with active kids too. I feel for you. I'm so glad that you are feeling better, I hadn't realised this is a side effect of steroids.  We really are put through the wringer with this chemo lark!  I know what you mean about going to dark places thinking about the future.  So hard to deal with this whilst also with kids at same time.

Wonderful to hear there's life afterward @Carmen Verandah I've got my first chemo tomorrow, feeling  apprehensive but good to get going.

Take care everyone, love ❤️

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

@Carmen Verandah Your message was exactly what I needed to hear today. There is an after. Thank you😘

I just come out of an emotional two day post steroids. As with the first round, it really took me down in  dark places.

Yesterday I found so hard to cope with my youngest energy level (she is pretty intense, so am I usually) and it broke me to feel upset with her with her questions, demands and wishes for attention and play. I am so ashamed as it is not her fault.

All the uncertainties about the future left me empty and raw. I have never felt so vulnerable and broken in my life and it scares me.

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

Dear May Chemo Starters

I eavesdropped on your forum which I saw when looking for the latest posts on ‘my’ October forum and it made me think about how I was feeling before I started. I wanted to wish you all good luck in the coming months. I am now out the other end after 4 x EC, 12 weeks of paclitaxol, 15 days of radiotherapy, and just starting on letrozole and biphosphonates. It’s a long road with ups and downs but you will get there, one foot in front of the other. I found the forum a lifeline as you can say how you really feel without having to protect your nearest and dearest.

I found the hair loss really tough but found a great online shop Simply Wigs. They have photos of customers wearing some of the wigs so you get a better idea. Mono filament, lace cap is the way to go as they look like you have a parting and hairline. I finally chose a short white asymmetrical style with darker roots and no one knows its a wig. The good news is my hair started to grow back about 7 weeks after chemo and now I can almost see it growing, plus eyelashes and eyebrows. There also serums you can buy to strengthen these, not sure if they work but my friend bought me some. My nails took a beating but are slowly growing back.

I felt okay for the first four months but did then get very tired, so looking back I should have rested a bit more, so that would be my advice.

Wishing you all the best and reassuring you that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

Happy Saturday!

I had my pic line put in on Friday, chest x-ray, bloods and ECG at the cancer unit.  The nurses were v reassuring and  I'm now good to go for my first chemo on Monday.  A relief to get started.  @noodledoodle that workshop sounds wonderful!  I'll definitely sign up I could really do with some help in the makeup department anyway! 😂 I had wondered about getting my eyebrows microbladed but left it too late.

I hope you all have restful weekends ❤️ it's great to be part of your group x

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

@noodledoodle  sounds like you are really rocking it with your shaved head and dark nails!  Thanks for confirming no gel, I will go and buy some myself and take it to the salon before I start my treatment.

So glad that you enjoyed the workshop too, I did have a look at the site and as there are plenty of times to choose from thought I would wait until all my appointments were sorted before signing up for one.

Wishing everyone in this group wherever you are  a relaxing and uneventful weekend.

Lots of hugs ladies. xxx

Hi all,

I have just done a makeup workshop with look good feel better and would highly recommend:

https://lookgoodfeelbetter.co.uk/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7pWGkYfb8AIV0LvVCh1R0AZXEAAYASAAEgK3kfD_BwE

It is free with loads of good tips and advice on applying makeup when your eyebrows and eyelashes have gone and looking after your skin during chemotherapy.

Its not worth buying any extra makeup products to join in. just use what you have as they will send you a bag with a lot in after the workshop.

Didn`t recognise myself when I had finished!

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

@simplyeve

Lovely to hear from you. So glad you have a plan of action. I too am having radiotherapy And biophosphonates after chemotherapy. As I understood it, the biophosphonates are given as an infusion every 6 months. My mum also has these as she has osteoporosis and hers are given this way.
I read about the dark nail varnish and have black nails at the moment! it did say NOT gel though

I paint a good vision at the moment with my black nails and bristley head😂😂 although my shaved hair has started to deplete slowly as from yesterday!  lt felt good to shave it off though. One less thing to stress about, and was used to the new look before it started depleting, although everybody’s different.
Doing an online makeup course today for chemo patients, which should help to draw my eyebrows on properly when they disappear. Think I will come out of all this high maintenance!
I am on Day 12 of my first EC and feel fine  just get intermittent fatigue which is relieved by some form of exercise, usually a walk. Have another week of reprieve, so going to make the most of it, before my second round.
So good to see @Love running and@Poacher65 doing so well with round 2. Gives me hope 🤞

Best wishes to those just started, and about to start chemotherapy . I am sure it won’t be as bad as you think.

keep up the good work all you guys. 💪

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

Hello Ladies.

I know I haven't been commenting much, but I have been reading all your posts and think you are all doing amazingly well. It's great to read that those of you on your second treatments are coping better and that by telling your team your problems they have managed to adjust your medication accordingly. It's also quite nice that a lot of you seem to be having similar medication so symptoms can be shared also it seems you are all managing to get over your treatment before starting the next cycle great positive for those of us waiting to start.

Well yesterday I went for my Oncology appointment, I knew I would be having TCHP but wasn't sure how many cyles, anyway I need 6 cycles (3 weekly) then will continue to have another 12 cycles of HP (3 weekly) once recovered from chemo follow on with 5 days of Radiotherapy for three consecutive weeks, at some point he will add in the Hormone therapy probably with the radiotherapy, but these are long term for 10 years. I will also have Zoledronic Acid every 6 months for 3 years not quite sure when it will start of how it's given, think I was losing the plot by then.

My oncologist was lovely and has explained the Chemo in detail and will go over the other treatments at each stage as he said there was far to much info to take in fully, I have to say by the time I came out my mind was totally blown, I had also asked permission to take my husband along so it was lovely to have the second pair of ears, I have my first treatment over 2 days, have already got my prescription for the dexamethasone and lansoprozole which I have to start in the morning of my first treatments which will be Pertuzumab on its own, then the following day I have the TCH, I continue with the dexamethasone up to day 3, the lansoprozole I take daily and will get a 3 weekly prescription. Then on day four I start some injections in my tummy which are done daily for 7 days, not quite sure what this is but think its to boost white blood cells? Does that sound right? I need a heart scan before I start and also need a dental check up as have broken tooth so my first treatment is not scheduled until June 15th, so I'm sorry to say I will now look at joing the June Chemo group, that's not to say I won't keep following your stories Ladies I most certainly will as I think this group are so supportive of one another and you are all so positive and have a great sense of fun.

In the meantime I have got a dental appointment for next Wednesday, made my blood test appointment locally for the 14th and have got a lymphodoema clinic appointment on 11th June. Oh and went for a haircut today too, so have got a short style which I haven't sported in years, so far the overall impression has been good, but not sure that my 2 year old grandson could quite get his head around my new look, but at least he recognised my voice lol.

A couple of things I picked up from my meeting that might be useful was that the steroid tablets are better if taken at breakfast and lunch to try and avoid the sleepless nights and I was told that painting my nails 💅 a darker colour was often a good thing, so mentioned it at the salon today, they only do gel polish so need to check up what is best to use, but if I need to I can buy my own and take it in they will do my nails for me so I will have a nice professional finish.

So that's me nearly ready for treatment and as I have a few bits and pieces going on I am hoping the time will pass fairly quickly.

Sending everyone big hugs, stay strong Ladies and you will be over and done sooner than you think

@noodledoodle may have to steal your photo of the big pants, just loved it.

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

Thanks @Love running it's so great to talk about it to others who are going through it.  My family are all lovely but I don't like burdening then with it all the time.

The medical team have all been very good so I feel like I'm in good hands.  I've decided to just put myself in their hands and hope for the best really. I'm a real worrier naturally so have been on high alert since the diagnosis - not a good state of affairs!  So difficult to stop my mind working overtime catastrophising.  I ended up seeing the gp who gave me some antidepressants which has helped.  I think exercising more would help, I'm going to try to keep active during chemo at least a walk every day. Thanks for all your wise words ❤️

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

Thanks @Poacher65 that's really reassuring.  I've got a v supportive partner and sister but still feel v alone in it all.  Good luck tomorrow with your Ec, the hair issue is so hard, I've had my hair cut short to psychologically prepare me for losing it but know I'll find that difficult. The hairdresser was at the cancer centre and had also had BC so was v supportive.  She said that the cold cap worked on some of her clients.  I'm going to try it just in case it works but have also spent lots on a wig, silk scarfs and variety of hats as back up.  I have rather dry curly brown hair but decided to go for a long straight blonde hair wig! It looks rather fab although totally not me! Makes me laugh when I put it on which is good!   I hope all goes well for you tomorrow ❤️

@Poacher65 Just wanted to wish you good luck for tomorrow and happy anniversary.

Sorry to hear cold capping did not work out for you. It was worth a try.  I have no words of wisdom, except that when I imagine myself bald, I hope to look as good and fierce as the black panther warriors in the Marvel movie. We ladies will be a little army of bald strong warriors that will be this beast. I will join a course to learn to use make up to own this new look.

Mine are starting to fall too (pillow case and shower😩). Not so obvious yet as I cut them very short 4 weeks ago, so I will enjoy the few coming days. I thought I was ready for the bald look but It is more emotional than I anticipated. I have still not been able to try my wig at home. Not ready yet. I will probably go for a shave in the week-end trying to make it fun with the kids. I bought colored hair spray and told them they can have fun with my hairdo.

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

@TicTok I know, my nurse did the same before I started chemo, after one hour with her telling me all the possible side effects I was wiped out.

My hubby who works in the pharmaceutical industry reminded me that all possible side effects (from the most common to the rarest) are also mentioned on the medication leaflet as a precaution but seldom, you get them all and especially not all at once. It is for safety. Still it is scary at first. If you can, try to not think about it.

We are supported by competent medical team that will help us to reduce the side effects. So far I was lucky I think as they helped me between round 1 and 2 and I coped much better with round 2. Now I am at Day 4 of round 2 and I am feeling ‘normal’ again except my hair are falling.

keep strong.

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

welcome @Coastal @to our group.

I know the whole journey is scary (been diagnosed in February, got two surgeries, got my second round EC on Monday). You will have good days and bad days but you will be surrounded by very competent medical team that can help you go through it. For example, they reduced the dose for me and gave me another type of anti sickness meds to better cope and it worked well with my second round. I also find that physical exercises hep me to fight against the fatigue and give me more energy (which is great as I have two energetic kids).
Also, this group is always very supportive and together we will help each other to go through this journey.

Waiting is the worst. Believe me patience is not one of my quality... and I am counting down the days to hopefully the end of it.

I have not tried cold cap (not offered here where I am). Few in the group have tried and can give you advice. I went for the short hair cut 4 weeks ago to get use it it and now  they are starting to fall off. I am probably going to shave my head this week-end. I have bought a wig, beanies, caps and scarfs and I will use them depending on my mood.

Stay strong, we are here to support you

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

Hi Everyone

Hope you are all doing OK.

@Coastal welcome to our little group. You will find strength to get through this with good and bad days but we are all in this together so are here for support and encouragement ❤

My 2nd EC tomorrow at 9am...hopefully i will cope as I I with the first dose.

My hair situation is getting worse...now have lots of bald patches and it's very very thin to the point where I can't hide the bald areas so wearing a bandana most of the time as hair also falling out onto everything!

Spoke with my nurse yesterday who suggested I have cold cap again tomorrow and see what next week brings.

I am more or less at the point of admitting cold cap not working for me and taking control of my hair loss and shaving it off. I'm strangely resigned to that but upset too. I absolutely do not regret trying cold cap and would encourage everyone who wishes to try to keep their hair to try it....it was easy to tolerate for me....just not worked unfortunately.

Any words of wisdom for me on the hair front?

Have a good day all...take care xx

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

Hi I'm starting chemo on Monday and would love to join your group, I hope it's not too late in the month?  I was diagnosed in march with grade 2 BC hormone positive, her neg, had the op and found out that it was actually grade 3 with 4 lymph nodes involved ☹️ I've been v anxious since the diagnosis and found the whole waiting experience v hard.  I'm having a pic line put in this week then start on Monday 8 sessions every 2 weeks EC and paxitaxol.  I'm going to try the cold cap.  V scared but know it's something I've got to do.

Best wishes Nicki

Morning all it’s nice to here you are all improving a little ... my nurse rang yesterday, talked me through the horror story of what can and cannot happen 😳but hearing that you are all doing ok helps . I have my first session next Thursday and have chosen to give the cold cap a go as I would only have to have it 4 times as my next 4 with a different mix don’t make the hair come out .  Love to all x

@Love running I'm so pleased to hear that you're having a much easier time. It sounds as though the lower dose is better for you.

My mouth ulcers are almost gone and no longer painful and my oncologist will reduce all 3 FEC drugs which should prevent a recurrence. My 2nd Chemo is tomorrow.

Hope everyone else is coping well. Sending hugs and best wishes. 🤗

Good morning,

How is everyone today? Just want to wish you all strong ladies a very good day.

Day 3 following my second round EC and I start to get my head out of the clouds. This second round has been much gentler on me than the first (lower dose and new anti sickness meds). I hope it will continue uphill from now until next round.
I hope you are coping with your treatment and getting better, lots of rest and well deserved peace.

Keep on fighting! We are strong. We can beat this.

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

@coffeeandcake

I have also taken Pelgraz and been told that bone pain can occur especially leg and lower back or even the rib cage.

To shorten the neutropenia, Pelgraz boosts the bone marrow to produce more blood cells.

I have got some pain last week after my first round but it was more like training aches. This was in turn bad as my blood count was very low after the first round.
I have found that gentle Pilates exercises helped me (I think) with them.

I got my second round yesterday and it went smoother last night as I got a lower dose and new meds. But I need to take my Pelgraz shot today, I will let you know how it goes.
I hope your bone pain is manageable and will ease soon. Our body and mind are strong. We are strong!
take care

Has anyone experienced bone pain setting in after the chemo? I’m on day 7 now and my thigh bones are starting to hurt a little. I took the Pelgraz injection 24 hours after my first EC last week and have heard it’s that injection which causes the pain as the bones are hard at work making new bone marrow x

It's surprising how much weight you actually lose when you can't eat properly! 🥺🥺

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

@TicTok  I will also have a total of 8 cycles. The first 4 were Dec to Feb (Docetaxel), then a lumpectomy and sentinel node removal. I then started again on 29th April for 4 more cycles (FEC).

I am on the ROSCO trial though and this is what happens, is anyone else on a research trial?

I know that everyone has personalised treatment depending on their own situation but maybe ask your oncologist why you are on 8 cycles?

Sending best wishes. x

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

Loved the photo @noodledoodle , thanks for making me smile.

I still have mouth ulcers but I think I'm over the worst as the pain seems less and I'm managing to eat a bit more. I have lost 3 pounds in weight but I wouldn't recommend this weight loss plan to anyone! 😟

I'm going to the hospital this morning for bloods and Covid swab and then 2nd chemo on Thursday. I must admit that I am anxious knowing that I still have the mouth ulcers but hoping that it can be improved by having a reduced dose. My telephone appointment with my oncologist is tomorrow morning so I will ask what can be done. I have read that all 3 FEC drugs can cause them.

@Love running  I hope your 2nd chemo goes well.

To everyone who is struggling with side-effects, hang on in there, it will get better and we have to remind ourselves that the tumour is under attack!

Welcome to new members, you will find this forum an amazing source of support. 💜

To those who are feeling quite normal again, enjoy it and find nice things to do.

Xx ❤️❤️

We will keep on fighting and we will be stronger at the end of this journey.

Re: MAY 2021 CHEMOTHERAPY STARTERS

@Poacher65

Tomorrow is another day! I think we are all emotionally unstable at the moment and no wonder! We will all come out the other end stronger and more appreciative of the simple things in life. Until then:

@Love running

You are so right about the positives of this horrible experience, it certainly makes you appreciate the wonderful little things in life that passed us by before. It is definitely a positive!

@Purpledaze well done on the hair!  I certainly don’t regret it, although will be glad when the bristles have gone😂😂 getting quite used to my wardrobe of scarves and wigs.
I am on day 7 of chemo one and have felt quite normal today. Enjoyed lunch out in the sunshine, a nice walk and an online exercise class ( took it gently!). Exercise definitely boosts the spirits.
Highlight of my day tomorrow is a Picc line flush and dressing change😂😂😂

Just glad not to be taking those shed load of anti sickness meds and steroids for a while.
Take Care everybody and hope all of you are okay xx
