November 2017 Chemo Starters

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

I’ve been using a toothpaste sized but of shampoo then aqueous cream. I found my scalp really started to get dry after about 3 bald weeks.
I can recommend a cashmere beanie I got mine from TK MAXX for Β£12.99 it is so soft and even sleep in it if it cold being stretchy it stays put better than the cotton or bamboo sleep caps.

Thanks Sue, you were lucky to keep some hair 😊

I was unsure what the best way forward was once my hair had gone, whichnI guess is to shampoo & then moisturise my scalp

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

Hi Ladies

JC I wasn't brave enough for the shave either! However, without cold capping, I did keep some of my hair and found that quite useful when I finished chemo and it started to grow back. I was able to go without the scarf after only 4 months.

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

Hi Elora, we have a very chilly wind here today so it's good to make the most when it's sunny.
I lost quite a few strands of hair the first week but it started shedding like leaves on day 16 - I'm on day 20 today and it's very thin. It'll probably be out over the next few days - I'm not brave enough to shave. I've started to wear my turbans & I should imagine I'll be wearing Lady Catherine (yes, we've named my wig πŸ™ƒ) any day now, but not over my hoodie!!

Thanks Lesley, I'm glad that you are playing nicely - my dentist receptionist decided to be helpful and offered for me to wait outside so as to avoid a crowded waiting room!! Not very impressed!! πŸ˜•
I think I'll treat myself to an early Christmas pressie of Liz Earle.
I'm a big fan of manuka honey too, especially with a Holland and Barrett penny sale, I've stocked up.
Anadan, I've had watery bloodshot eyes for a few days last week and dry down below for a few days. Talking of that area, just leaving for a smear - great fun πŸ˜•
Thanks Bythesea - your no.2 sounds as if if went well πŸ‘
Enjoy your afternoon ladies xxx

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

Oh anadan you made me laugh out loud again!!!

You were saying about 'irritation down below', then preparing for a shave ..... I was still thinking 'down below' .... and then hairs falling into your plate.........

I had a mental picture of your plate on the floor etc etc...... sorry my train of thought went all over the place!!!

What day are you?  I am day 15 and so far I've not had a lot fall out but my hair really hurts, the base of the hair/follicles/roots so there is definitely something going on.....

I'm not looking forward to shaving it off, but for me it's a control thing, I want it go on on my terms and timing, not just when it feels like it!!

OMG! What an experience for you Milliemoo and Lesley !!

Lesley, when I went to the unit about the nosebleed, the doc said nose as well as eyes can go very dry, eyes can feel irritated, nose can bleed x

I feel dryness and irritation down below 😞 will talk about it on Mon during my visit with onc

I'm mentally preparing myself for a shave, the hairs are falling into my plate when I'm eating x hopefully family won't find any in their tea tonight πŸ™„ I wanted to do it after chemo 2 but not sure if it lasts so long 😣

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

JC I read somewhere that it is still really important to wash your scalp as it helps pave the way for the new growth.
I have decided to use the Liz Earle range of hair products, I've used their shower range for years, it's very kind to the skin and doesnt have that awful chemical that dries everything out in it. All natural. They have a really good offer on for christmas, shampoo, conditioner and oil all in a bag for a very good price - so I've ordered that .... thought I'd use the bag to carry my wig in when I'm off on my travels as well!!
Chaffinich, I am a big fan of Manuka honey, it is extraordinary stuff - a good teaspoon a day!
Milliemoo, I am ex NHS manager - I completed my MSc in Healthcare Leadership a couple of years ago, all around patient centred co-ordinated care ....... a great course! I have spoken to the NHS leadership academy about going back in to future courses to give the patient's perspective and they are going to write me into the course! It has been quite weird being treated by clinicians that I have had furious arguments with about clinic capacity in the past!! But I have played nicely!!! Honest!!

I can see that this would be quite an eye opening experience for you. You must give the other medics a nervous twitch 😜
The support therapies are great, this business has as much effect on our mental health as it does on our physical health. I’ve also been fascinated to learn about the effects of things like Manuka honey and the way that the medical grade is used for wound management etc.

Morning  😊

Lesley I had bloodshot eyes last week, all cleared up now though.

Milliemoo, thanks for your advice - would the drops work on watery eyes?

I don't  know if anyone can help, but I am almost like a tree in winter. Once my hair has gone, what's the best way of looking after my scalp? Do I still shampoo, should I use a moisturiser? Would appreciate any tips

Mostly I'm just trying to be a good patient! I can see the Registrars heart sinking if I ask too many questions! It's being a fascinating journey being on the other side of the desk and really opened my eyes to the range and role of alternative and supportive therapies...there is so much out there that isn't taught in the mainstream medical community. Fascinating!

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

thanks Milliemoo

I had to take a photo of the box and blow it up cos the writing is so bloody small on the box!

No sodium chromoglycate in the one I got but contains  Boric Acid, Sodium Borate and Benzalkonium Chloride???

you've opened the flood gates admitting you are a GP, we will all come to you with  our aches and pains!!

Not concerned so much as irritated at the moment.   But rest assured I wont be taking any chances with my eyesight!  If it changes at all I will go and see someone!

thanks for the advice

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

Lesley, my eyes have started to be very dry and irritated feeling, and I'm carrying around Saline eye drops in my handbag. On some mornings I've had to put a drop in to get them to open properly before I get out of bed. Dry eye is the number one cause of red and irritated eye, unless you have any sign of a sticky green or yellow dischargelr swelling around the eyelid, which might indicate infection. Some hay fever drops contain sodium chromoglycate which can cause a feeling of grittiness, so I'd say use non medicated drops to wash out, or see your pharmacist/GP for some Chloramphenicol drops for infection.

(I'm am a GP, but would always er on the side of caution and go and show someone soooner rather than later if you're concerned x )

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

Good luck today to everyone having their cocktail 2 - thinking of you all.

I have to admit to having a bit of a naff evening last night.  Felt really down in the mouth, which isn't like me.... and to make matters worse I had run out of Guinness - schoolboy error!!

I gave myself a bit of a talking to and have woken feeling a lot brighter than the weather!!

I have a little question......   for the last 4/5 days my right eye lid has been twitching from time to time, not for long, but it keeps happening.   Last night, my right eye started to feel quite gritty, almost as if I had an eye lash in it.  It went quite red but I think that was more to do with me sticking my fingers in it!  I went to bed expecting to wake up to a real  gunky mess this morning, but no, nothing. It still feels gritty and it's still twitching.  I have put in some hayfever relief eye drops.

Am I just trying to link this to the chemo??  I'm not overly worried, my vision is not affected, no discharge, no sign of infection etc.  I will mention when I go for my pre-check on Tuesday but thought I would run past the gang to see if anyone else has experienced/heard of it???

have a happy Thursday!

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

I had a nice pair of 36GG's until July. I think my surgeon was hoping to get away with just a mastectomy . As implants don't come in my size my new boob is about half the size of the other. I have been given several choices for reconstruction but have decided to keep implant & have reduction on other side so I will eventually have a matching pair.

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

Surgically I think I have got away scot free - 2 lesions, one 5cm and one 2cm but both close and at the side of the boob.  Other than the scar you wouldn't know I had had any surgery at all. No dents or anything.

But then I'm told I could be BRCA positive which would mean a double mastectomy!!  So what was the point of tissue conserving surgery?????

I was up at Guys at the end of October and they took the bloods etc to do all the tests, for 5 different mutations, all breast/ovary/prostate related.  I wont hear until January what the results are.

I'm just putting it out of my mind at the moment but I don't think I will be jumping straight into surgery without weighing up all the options .... something my Oncologist appeared to be supportive of ..... but then she ruined it and said 'Oh if you don't want surgery you can go into a trial for the non-surgical approach, we are struggling to get recruits!'    Don't get me started!!

But very early on before all of this when we were first kicking about options and likely outcomes, the CNS spoke about reconstructive surgery and most of it seems to be get the other one to match, rather than sort the problem one out???  It did all feel quite counter intuitive!

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

Yeah would be nice to get some good news for a change😊

I'm a bit loopsided as well after they took 5cm lump out of smaller boob so a very noticeable difference but not sure if I want to put myself through another operation to just reduce the other

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

Well done Otter on your application, hope you have some positive news πŸ‘
Just come in from bloods, oncologist & dentist. I have a new onc, she was really lovely. Went through all my se's and have agreed to keep meds & injections the same for this cycle, they can be changed next time if there's a problem. So all being well with my blood I have a green light for chemo 2 on Friday 🀞
Then saw dentist ☠as I have a mahoosive toothache πŸ˜“ it turns out she thinks I have been grinding my teeth in my sleep so as from next week I shall be looking so sexy in my sleep cap, a mouth guard, lopsided boobs (had mastectomy in July & will have reduction on good one next year, apparently implants don't go up to my size!!) and bare lady garden !! 🀣
Hope you've all had a good Wednesday

dont joke shi, I have been looking at the antibacterial face masks for when I have to go on the train etc .... but then I stop myself with a bit of a reality check - I can't live in a bubble, I just have to be careful!

But I think in a few ways I am lucky living on my own, I can really control who and what I come into contact with
