Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

Thanks for the info Ruth. I have a PICC line and am only one treatment down, so just two line flushes.
Bit scary that the onc nurse is telling you how to look after the line and to pass this on to the district nurse. My first flush was done by the area PICC specialist, and yesterdays by a nurse with a student nurse and she did the pulsing bit and explained that all so hopefully my team are okay.
Do you regularly look at the clear bit yourself so would spot anything early.
Thanks Carole x

Oh AnnaKarenina you are going to have a long old day!
I’m in at 10, but as if my want I’ll be there mega early!
Finally flurry of activity as I strip the bed and wash anything that stands still long enough.
I’d cut your hair if it was me - take control!!
Take it easy Monday though, you could be a little low???
Hope everyone is wrapped up warm and feeling ok!
Nearly the end of another week .... getting closer to the end with every day!!!

Morning Anna good luck today x
Yes cut hair before wig fitting especially if you are having any cutting to your wig as they do fit different with and without hair
The wig shop I used did not to cut mine whilst I had hair because of it xxx

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

Up soooooo early (since 4.30) anticipating chemo day and the appointment isn't until 4 p.m. I'll be the one on the unit fast asleep. Wishing everyone a good day - wherever you are on the cycle. It is freezing here and my audio book won't download to my new phone for some reason. I would say the day can only improve but then I remember I am off to The Marsden! I have a meeting in town beforehand which will keep me occupied and I think it a good thing.

In other news, the wig is ready for fitting apparently. I am going on Monday. I still have intermittent tufts of hair, although I am now wearing scarves and hats constantly as I am not fit for public display! I think I should probably crop it short before the fitting? What do you reckon wise women?

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

Good evening ladies. I had a bit of an issue with my PICC line yesterday that resulted in a visit to a&e - in retrospect it could have been avoided so I wanted to share my experience with any of you that also have a PICC to help avoid the same happening.
The blood in my PICC clotted yesterday which meant that my district nurse couldn't draw blood or flush with saline. This was at 12.30. She decided to come back in a few hours to try again but by the time she came back it was worse. She said I needed to call my chemo unit to figure out what to do next. By that time I couldn't get into the unit before it shut so they said I had to go to a&e. My first learning was that if something isn't working that is chemo related get in touch with your chemo unit straight away!! My PICC first clotted at 12.30 - I am sure that if I had rung my unit then I could have gone in and got it fixed that afternoon rather than going to a&e where they honestly didn't really know what to do, took 4 hours to sort things out and frightened me quite a bit by saying that they would take the PICC out!!
In the end they managed to get an oncology nurse from the onc ward down to see me and she pretty much fixed the issue straight away. She said that it looked like my PICC wasn't being looked after properly which was why it was clotting and showed me how you should look after your PICC so that I could show my district nurse! 1) you should not be able to see any blood in the PICC line if you do it could clot in the tube and cause a blockage like mine did! It needs to be clear where the saline is sitting in the tube outside the body
2) if it does block you can use quite a bit of force to unblock it so if the nurses and doctors are trying but are afraid to use much pressure (5 different people tried to do mine before the onc nurse came down to a&e), try to get a chemo nurse to look at it as soon as possible as they are not afraid to use a bit of gusto! They can also use blood thinners to clear it if they need to 3) when you flush the PICC you need to do it in pulses not just one single push of the syringe and it is done and 4) you use as much saline as it takes to get a clear line - this could be more than one 10ml syringe

I know that is a lot of detail but I hope it is helpful as I feel that yesterday could have been avoided and would like to help anyone else with a PICC from avoiding it if possible and avoiding the prospect of a blood clot in the body ♥️♥️♥️

Poppywheel, I did a similar thing to Shi I measured out how much water in one of my glasses and worked out how many a day I needed to drink. I also try to split so that I have half in the morning and half in the afternoon. I also try to drink my water by 7pm to allow it to get through my system so I'm not on the loo all night.

Poppywheel, tip for the fluids, I measured out 2l was 6 of my coffee cups a day, so I aim for the 6cups and any more than that’s a bonus, makes it not such a chore to get the 2l a day in then. Good luck everone with treatments tomorrow, that’s another one ticked off 😘😘😘😘💕💕✨✨shi xx

Hello Lovely Ladies,

Lesley, and everyone else joining me on the 🍸 🎢 tomorrow, hope it goes okay & se’s not too bad for us all.

Lesley - I really struggled with drinking last time round, and taking tablets was a mission. I’m hoping to do better this time round!

Take care all.

Thanks for all your support today, just crashed on the sofa  doing nothing except play a few games on my tablet & have a kip 💤💤💤

Meesh, hopefully you are right and this is a blip today 🤞

Lesley either I missed the chippendales or they're running late, trying to get to see us all

I think when the weather is rubbish, it's hard to drink water, but i think that may be part of my issue, i haven't drank so much  over the last few days.

Good luck to the Thursday chemo ladies 🍀👍

Hugs to all

I'd just get the rats from I'm a celebrity!

I've got very strong eyebrows - I've never plucked or waxed them so I am hoping that they hang on in there - I think I will be more affected by their demise than my hair.

Head hair is still shedding but all other areas are hanging on in there ........... it's only a matter of time though!

Coconut wax/oil helps itchy head x
I felt like a spider was crawling all over my head after chemo 2
Now I have a bald but well moisturised shiny bonce
A few hairs have stayed but not many am hoping now I have had chemo 3 and changing to t for 4 I might get some regrowth
My eyebrows are hanging on 👍
Lesley the Chippendales lol I would end up with the annoying chipmunks from the cartoon chip n dale 🤣👍x

I'm a week or so behind you all and you are all doing so well and are a great support to me and each other. And Lesley please feel free to post any selfies 😄
Today I am going through excessively itchy head day, but only in one place!

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

JC, I also suffered on chemo 2 with feeling really down and teary on days 5-6 for no real reason. I think a few of us on the Oct thread did, just to let you know it may be a one off as I didn't suffer with it this time round. So fingers crossed for you. Just relax as others have said I'm sure you'll be back to your cheery self tomorrow.

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

how are you doing JC??  had that run around the block yet???

The chippendales are on their way over to you, so you had better be ready!!

I'm struggling to get my water down today - only managed a litre so far and I'm not enjoying it at all - which isn't like me!

I think its psychological ..... a bit like the veins ..... my body knows what is coming next.

I also never used to have a problem taking tablets - I could pop a couple of paracetamols without even a glass of water ...... but by day 8, I was heaving as I put a tablet in my mouth...... how weird are we??? or is it just me???

Having a mare of a work day - been at it since 6am and I still cant see over the pill of 💩

But no call to say my bloods are buggered ...... so every cloud!!!

oh JC sending big hugs 🤗 🤗 🤗 🤗 🤗 🤗 🤗 🤗

When did you stop taking your steroids - maybe it's a crash from that??

Don't beat yourself up - you have done brilliantly to get this far unscathed.

Laze on the sofa, stick a couple of christmas films on and you will be right as rain!

Day 5 & 6 were my worst ones last time.

If you dont feel any better by this afternoon, let me know and I'll definitely give you a 'big knickers on bald head' selfie!!

Jc hang on in there, you will be ok, rest and keep fluids going in, eat to keep strength up, it’s normal for the yo yo journey for emotions to be all over the place, you just have to go with the flow and let them out as they need to come out, then get your big girls pants back on, get all the love and support here on the forum and back into battle 😘😘😘💕💕✨✨shi xx

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

Hello lovely ladies,

I survived the first night after the 2nd chemo yesterday, SE very similar, so hopefully one more day of nausea and then only better days x

I have good veins in my arm, but they don’t go up there in my unit; my hand/ wrist veins misbehaved last time and I came home bruised after 3 attempts in different places and both hands, but yesterday.... hey ho, first time and in 👍 so keep thinking positive, ladies xx

lesley, please tell us what they said about green tea, I drink it, I like it, diddn’t know we shouldn’t Smiley Sad

my wig is ready, still in the box, not sure whether I will ever wear it... feel the same about the reconstruction of the breast... I Will probably stay breastless 😂 after mastectomy

my hospital pays £100 towards the wig, regardless of income, they work with the trendco company based in Notthingam, but they have a website too. They have nice hats and turbans too, so you might want to have a peek Smiley Happy

I’m wearing hats outside as it’s really cold now, but proudly take them off inside. The scalp is not sore anymore once I shaved.

Good luck for today xxx

we can do it 💪🏻👍💕💕

Mamadeacs, sorry your wig appointment wasn't up to scratch, what a bitch and also what a shame! My wig lady was lovely and really helpful, she also is some sort of support nurse in the chemo ward so that probably helps. I don't know why people do these jobs if they have no interest or don't care.

Have a lovely day ladies with minimal SEs.

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

Morning everyone...hope all of your veins are behaving and results are good!
I had wig appointment yesterday that I was dreading and the woman was the least compassionate person I think I have ever met! I was in tears, told a lot of women are let’s get this on you. My friend was shocked too. I wanted to know what the £50 difference was between one wig and the next (is it thinner, lighter, more breathable???) she said it just is! It’s done now, I ordered the first one she put on my head and got out of there very disheartened.
Pre chemo for me today, will discuss again whether to have 6x FEC or 3x FEC and 3x docetaxel and herceptin.
Good luck everyone xxx

Morning team, how is everyone doing? Are you all set Lesley? I hope the phone didn't ring and it is vein dances all round today. I am off for a walk in the cold to blow away the cobwebs before tomorrow's chemo. I'll need to stay within reach of a loo though as it is water on board (not to be confused with water boarding) day! x

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

you girls have got to get with the action!!

Instagram is the new twitter ...... it's quite fun actually, because you can put photos up in your stories bit and they are only live for 24hrs and then they are gone.  So they cant come back to haunt you in years to come.

I get to see what my son and girlfriend are up to - they tend to post photos of their evenings out etc.

Twitter I use to follow some celebs and theres quite a lot of health care info (profesional not personal) that I follow as well.

Facebook I use to keep in touch with my friends up north and aboard

I'm completely social media'd up!

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

Lesley, mine seem to start with the hand and work their way up the arm, elbow crease is last resort. I couldn't see the vein they used on the forearm but the nurse obviously could! They keep asking if the can use the other arm..... er no that would be surgery arm!

i usually drink loads all the time but increase it day before, day of and day after chemo.  Seems like you'll be good to go Thursday, yay for you! Good luck 🍀🍀🍀🍀

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

Our veins aren't daft Meesh, they know what's coming!

My unit wont go into the hand or the elbow so its got to be in between,  when the expert came on chemo1 she slipped it in really easily - I couldnt see what she was aiming at but she obviously knew what she was doing.

I will be drinking loads and getting all bloated in preparation for battle on Thursday........ I'm watching the clock tick around to 7pm ... no news is good news re bloods xx

Re: November 2017 Chemo Starters

Hi Lesley, thatvwig looks fab! Ive had fecx3 so far and have also had trouble with veins. When they saw me at pre chemo appointment they said I had good veins but I think my veins must have heard what was coming and said "nope you ain't putting that **bleep**e in here" and made things difficult on actual chemo day. Fec1 cannulated in hand but then couldn't get good return so ended up having expert use crease of elbow vein. Fec2 cannulated in side of forearm but again they weren't happy with the return so after trying to cannulated another vein gave up and again used crease of elbow. Fec3 again used forearm and actually managed to use it for chemo hoorah!

So I'll also join you ladies in a vein dance 💃🏻 👯‍♂️🕺🏻👯💃🏻🕺🏻👯👯‍♂️

Shi, I am willing to bet you probably did post the Thieve's Oil recipe and it is me not seeing it or not remembering seeing it. I have dispatched daughter to H&B so I can concoct away tonight!

Thanks for telling me about your port JC1262. It sounds do-able, even if I am the biggest wuss in the world. I am just back from my pre-assessment appointment and they were immensely kind, informative and reassuring. It will be a local with sedation and dissolvable sitches both of which probably make it a bit easier. Only challenge will be if my blood count has dropped as it is scheduled for day 7 post-chemo. No point in second guessing though.

Wishing you all a good evening and see you again tomorrow. xx
