Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

Morning ladies Smiley Happy sorry for the radio silence over the past week it’s all been a bit pants here but I think I’m coming out the other side now Smiley Happy
Kateday day how are you feeling now? I suffered with the injection too its not to say the least, I hope your feeling better.
Aneeebel well done on the hair Smiley Happy I’m going to get a wig next week and hoping to get him shaved too, I’ve got bald patches everywhere now it’s driving me mad I just want it gone!
I think I managed to do this week exactly what I did following chemo 1 and not read all your lovely words because cancers felt too much and overwhelming and then when I do wished I’d done it sooner 🤦‍♀️
I’ve found his cycle so emotionally draining, I think I’ve spent most the week crying at everything, my poor husband hasn’t known where too start!! I think it’s probably hair related and fatigue.
How is everyone else finding the fatigue? They keep telling me it’s normal (and I know I’m incredibly impatient!) I can’t do anything 7-10 days after and have to have help to look after the kids, I think that’s the worst thing Smiley Sad
Also the bladder problems 🤦‍♀️ This week Smiley Sad I’ve been so tired I just don’t know when I need to go and am like you often having trips to the toilet lots and no water before bed!
Sorry I’ve been a little ray of sunshine! But on a positive note we’re getting there and every day is closer Smiley Happy is anyone planning anything nice for when that happens? Or when chemo is done?

Ha... We obviously all look like our siblings but funny that hair, or lack of it, makes us look even more like them! 💙💗

Have a fabulous w/end x 💗💪🏼💗💪🏼💗

Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

I don't want to wear it all the time, just when I need a confidence boost I think.

Yes, mine's like that, lots of strands coming out. I've got my parents coming to stay for a couple of days next week so that they can come to chemo with me and I think it might upset them too much if I shave it off before then.  My stepmum's upset enough because she loves my curls, so I've told her I'll save her a ringlet 😉

I tried one wig on and thought I looked like my sister too, who's 14 years younger than me 😃 I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not 🤔

Take care and have a good weekend.

Yay Aneeebel! I’m sure you look fabulous 👍✂️😊

I sent a photo of myself to my siblings immediately after I had my hair cut to a number 1. My brother sent me back a photo of himself on his old army ID card (he was in the reserves) and we looked like twins! 😂😬🙄

I hope everyone is having a fabulous Friday! xox 😘

Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

Hi Fiona... Mine hadn't started coming out in clumps but lots and lots of strands... It was completely lifeless!
Good news that you've got your wig! I've got one too but I'm not sure how often I'll wear it!
I'm a twin and I actually look more like my sister with my wig on...how bizarre is that! Haha!

Hope you and everybody else is well x

Hi Aneeebel and all October ladies 😁
I'm pleased to hear you got to the hairdressers and you're happy with the cut. Mine has started falling out now, not massively but each time I brush it so the big shave is approaching rapidly now 💇‍♀️ I got a wig yesterday I'm really pleased with so the timing is perfect. I'm waiting for clumps of hair to fall out before I brave the shave.

How's everybody doing? Hope you're all fighting fit.

Hello to all you lovely October Ladies

I hope you're all feeling well.... We've been quiet on here for a few days! 💗

I finally plucked up the courage to go to the hairdressers on Thursday....

I didn't go completely bald but I had a No.2! ✂️✂️

My head feels sooooooooo much better! And it doesn't look too bad at all! (I was having a mini panic attack in case I had a horrible head!! 🤔✂️) Obviously the rest of my hair will fall out at some point but for now I'm happy with a No2!

Have a lovely day x

Hi Aneeeebel

I've had a similar issue re bladder - for me it seems to have built up over each course of treatment but does seem to settle back down. I've not actually mentioned it to anyone as one of the chemo drugs I have does cause bladder sensitivity so I've sort of just assumed it was that

Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

No 💜Fiona... I still haven't had my hair cut!!!! I've actually still got a lot of hair left but it's disappearing minute by minute! I have visions of getting out of the shower and I'll be bald anyway!  🤔👒✂️ 🚿

Good news about your ultrasound and like you say, if your lymph nodes are affected at least you've started your treatment! 💪🏼 My cancer is in my lymph nodes...when I went to the clinic initially I was hoping my lymph nodes were swollen as I'd recently had shingles on my arm on the same side but no, it wasn't shingles! 💗💪🏼

ElliesMum...glad you're feeling a bit better! Let's hope I feel liberated when I get my hair chopped and don't turn into a gibbering wreck!! 😳✂️ I must admit, last week when I felt so poorly I couldn't talk about my hair or think about it without wanting to cry....I feel a bit more level headed about it now! And it is driving me to drink!!

💗💪🏼

Badboob... Go and have 40 winks! You deserve a nod! Hope you continue to feel well! I had a lovely sleep on the sofa yesterday for about an hour! 💗💪🏼

I've suddenly lost the sensation that my bladder is full....I have to keep going to powder my nose 'just in case'! I don't know if it's a coincidence or something to do with chemo but the nurse on the helpline said not to worry about it! That's easy for her to say!! Very strange! 🤔

Stay strong girls.... X 💗💪🏼💗💪🏼💗💪🏼💗💪🏼💗

Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

@ElliesMum You're right -- live vaccine is only in the nasal spray. My BCN advised me not to get the flu jab during chemotherapy, though, and you can get flu-ish symptoms from it. Just worried that @Kateday may have a fever masked by painkillers. Better to be safe and check in with the chemo team.

FYI, my GCSF pain has always been in my long bones -- the marrow "waking up," so to speak.

Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

I hope you’re feeling a bit better, Kateday. I’m pretty sure the only live flu vaccine is the nasal spray version (given to children), so if you had the jab you should be fine, but as reddi suggests it’s best to call your team if you’re not feeling well. I’ve been lucky with the GCSF injections, as I’ve heard others say it caused them bone and joint pain. Whatever the cause, I hope you manage to get to the bottom of it soon.

I hope you can squeeze in a nap today, Badboob. That’s definitely on my agenda! 😴

Thanks all for the lovely wishes! 💕 I’m starting to feel more like my usual self. My husband can tell when I’m starting to feel better post-chemo, as I suddenly want to eat all the tasty food in the kitchen 😂 - after having struggled with nausea and a bad taste in my mouth the first several days after each FEC. Still, I’ll take extra medication and an infection over vomiting hands down, so on balance I’m doing well!🙈👍

Good news about the ultrasound, Fiona! Fingers crossed the biopsy is straightforward for you next week. For the record, I managed to keep the very short (number 1) head hair longer than I expected... it decided to start departing on day 17 and I was almost totally bald by day 21!😬🤷‍♀️

Haha Aneeebel, defo ask for the good stuff if they’re not giving it to you already. It made *such* a difference for me!!! Good luck with the hair cut. I hope you feel fabulous and liberated afterwards - I did (much to my surprise).

Love and hugs to all! 💜😘💪💐 xox

Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

Morning everyone,

Hope you are all coping with this poop! Had my 2nd dose of demestos yesterday, err sorry I meant Docetaxel Herceptin and Perjeta plus some lovely steroids and just for good measure my first zoledronic acid infusion. So it only took 6 hours instead of the 7 for my first!😂😂😂

Feel surprisingly well this morning despite have not slept since 2.00pm! Blasted Steroids! At least the oncologist cancelled my post chemo steroids so maybe I will sleep to night.

On the subject of hair loss, mine started to go on day 14 and now by day 22 I am definitely receding and I have a much wider parting. I have warned DH that I can’t go on like this much longer  and will be booking a chop with my lovely  hairdresser. I don’t want to do it my self as I am sure I will end up looking like a cross between a skin head and Ken Dodd! It is really pi**ing me off all the hair all over the house. I don’t think the hoover has been used this much in years.

Anyway I will stop rambling and hope that those of you suffering improve very quickly.

Stay strong folk, stay strong!

Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

@Kateday Actually, I just realized that you said you're taking painkillers -- if so, *definitely* call your chemo hotline asap. Paracetamol (and ibuprofen, too, I think) will reduce fever, masking this symptom of infection.

Member

Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

@Kateday I was told not to get a flu jab during chemo, as the jab contains live viruses and the immune system may not be able to do its usual work of creating antibodies against the strains. If I'm understanding correctly, it sounds as though you had your flu jab on  5 Nov and started chemo around 30/31 Oct. If so, I'd call your chemo hotline / chemo day unit / oncologist -- the aches may be due to one of the flu jab viruses. Your team may want to have you come in to check your white blood cell counts, even if your temp isn't elevated.

Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

ElliesMum, I hope the antibiotics are starting to do their best and you're feeling a teeny bit better.

Aneebel - Lol!  I don't think you have the option of backing out now.  Besides, you're exactly 3 weeks ahead of me so you're my "barometer" Smiley Wink  Have you had your hair cut yet?

So, I'm on day 13 and according to "The Complete Guide to Breast Cancer" (written by a GP and a breast care surgeon who have both gone through breast cancer), Day 13 is typically the day you start losing hair, and not necessarily the hair on your head!  This is true for me - I noticed a loss in a certain area this morning, but at least I can save on that job for a while Smiley Wink  It made me chuckle anyway.

I went for my ultrasound this morning, following on from the phone call I had last week.  They can't seem to find anything extra in the left breast, but they want to do a biopsy in the right armpit, just to rule it out.  However, because I'm in the "danger zone" week, they won't do it until next Thursday now.  However, she did say it looked as if it was just slightly enlarged and could just be a reaction to the original biopsy.

Whatever it is, I'm feeling more positive about it because I've started chemo so, if it is more cancer, then it's already being dealt with

Have a fantastic day, ladies, lots of hugs.

Hi all I’m hoping you can help me

I’m quite a bit behind most of you and I’m also in November thread
Today I feel rough as and aching everywhere but inparticulr the bottom of my back and my elbows which seems a little odd
I have tried painkillers not much use , limited sleep as it’s so uncomfortable
I had my last injection last night so could it be side effects from this
Also had flu jab Monday again not sure if this
Temp is up and down but not above 37.5
Is this all just normal xx

Thanks Sue and Mrs fingers. I did end up calling the hotline and they did ask me to come in. 🙈 Hopefully the antibiotics sort it out. I thought I was doing so much better this round! 😂🙄

I hope your infection has cleared up, Mrs fingers! 🤞💕😘

Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

Ellie’s mum, please call your hotline. Sore throat is a sign of infection, even if your temp is within range. I’ve just gone through this, had sore throat plus slight fever 37.4 etc, then it went to >38 and they called me into hospital. Spent 9 hours on a drip with antibiotics and then sent home with antibiotics. They’re letting me take paracetamol now, but you have to check your temp first as paracetamol can mask a fever. Better safe than sorry! Xx

Just in case anyone else is awake at 1.30am... any advice about what do to regarding a killer sore throat? I’ve had a terribly sore throat all day and it’s keeping me up. Temp has been above 37 but no so high as I need to call it in. Husband and daughter asleep and don’t want to cause a fuss, but feel rotten. Any ideas? I’d usually take a bunch of decongestants and cough medication, but unsure about what I’m allowed to take whilst on chemo... 🙈😬💗

Does everyone else count the days down or is it just me? 🤔

Hope you’re all well. I’ve been struggling not really physical but mental. Can’t stay awake. Lights are on but nobody home. Yesterday was a struggle. Can’t cope with simple things like making a sandwich or hearing more than one noise. Sensory overload. Felt like some hallucinogenic trip.
Today it has lifted a bit and feeling slightly more normal. All very odd.
Ravenous appetite, can’t stop thinking of scoffing everything in sight. Feel like I have low blood sugar all the time and a bit faint/shakes.
Hope you all have a good weekend...x

Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

Thanks to all of the good vibes you wonderful women sent my way - and possibly aided by the plethora of additional anti-sickness medication I’ve been prescribed - I have managed not to be sick at all (so far), over 24 hours after chemo yesterday. Yay!👍💕💪 Such an improvement over last time. I still feel a bit nauseous and crappy, and very tired, but not being physically sick for hours on end has been a game changer for me. We can do this! 💪💙😘 xox

Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

Hello liloc

I'd suggest you ask your breast nurse for guidance on being off work. Mine has also provided me with the sick notes I've needed as I've gone along my treaebt journey. It's likely you'll find that the side effects you experience will vary with each chemo cycle - this has certainly been my experience (I was an early August starter and I've just yesterday had 5 of 6 EC treatments) so you'll want to build some flexibility into your plans. I think quite a lot of us get increasing side effects as we progress but mine have fluctuated with each cycle. What I would say is don't put yourself under any pressure and give yourself the time to recover ahead of the next round.
You might also find your HR may apply different sick policy rules for something like this - again that was my experience in that the usual sickness policy didn't apply and my employer has been really very generous and keen to make sure I'm ok. As such I've been able to take time off since my surgery and won't be going back until I'm over with radiotherapy so probably sometime around March I'd think.

Hope you get the support you need.

Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

Liloc, I’m self employed and put it this way I’m not planning any work right now. My brain is fried. Can barely remember why I’ve open a cupboard let alone anything requiring real concentration. Also during my low immunity weeks I’ve been advised to avoid public transport and crowded places.

Macmillan have a booklet all about your rights at work but basically you have enhanced rights, the company have to treat you fairly. If your sick pay is not adequate there may be other benefits you can tap into and again I think I saw this in one of the Macmillan booklets.

Good luck x

Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

Fiona silly sayings but I hope you’re ok, you’re in my thoughts.
Liloc I agree everyone’s different, I’m off sick but I don’t think I would be able to do my job safely. I think Macmillan we really good re money advice if that helps?
I feel pants today been cold capping and my hair is dropping out everywhere 🤦‍♀️ Just want today to over so tomorrow be better, guess it’s just ones of those days. One day closer to the finish line 💪🏻
Love to you all

Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

Thanks Fiona and Aneeebel!!! 🤞🙈💪

Liloc, it seems that the way you react to chemo is quite individual. Some of us have been ok and some have been really knocked over by chemo. I can only speak to my own circumstances, but I’ve been able to work throughout cycle one. I worked from home the first week, although to be honest I got very little done as I didn’t feel great! I was able to work almost as normal for weeks 2-3, aside from taking time off for appointments and getting a bit more tired than usual. I’m hoping that this trend will continue. However, I should note that I was pleasantly surprised to learn that my workplace offers very generous sick leave provisions (6 months full pay, then 6 months half pay) should I be unable to work. Have you looked into what you might be eligible for? Maybe see how round one goes and take it from there? Best of luck with your treatment! 💕

Re: October 2018 Chemo starters

Hi all, I’ve just joined the Nov starters thread as I’m due to start chemo mid Nov but I wanted to ask you ‘old timers’ what you are doing about work. I might have the option of working from home so I don’t have to commute but I have no idea if I’ll be up to it. It’s just a desk job in front of a computer for 21 hours a week but don’t know what to ask HR for at work. Are you all off sick? I’m going to my GP next week but have no idea what sort of sick note to ask for (looking at 9-12 months treatment -chemo followed by surgery then rads - and financially I can’t afford to be off all that time). What do you think?

I am glad you all enjoyed my Yoga exploits, I do believe that you have to find the funny side in the rubbish hand we have been dealt otherwise I will go bonkers. So you now know what to except from me!

I gave my hair a good brush before I started, so not too much fall out during the session. I managed to clear up the evidence when I cleaned my mat at the end! I really enjoy Yoga and my teacher knows I am having chemo so we had a more gentle session, which was really nice.

I am so sorry for those of you that have been having a rough time. I feel a bit of a fraud as I have not really suffered that much. Had my bloods taken today and an appointment with my lovely oncologist. Bloods good. My white blood cell count has gone up from 4.0 to 6.7! Blimey! So I am good to go for my next dose of demestos! My biggest problem is in the bottom department 🙀 with a rather nasty bout of constipation,(apologies if you are eating your tea) , anyway he got very excited and ended up prescribing me a whole new box of tricks designed to get thing moving............I have warned DH to move out for a few days......

Finally, I too have found that my sleep pattern is disturbed, I seem to wake every two hours, but have trained myself not to panic so I do drop off again. But the Steroids definitely made this much much worse so much so that the oncologist said I could forget about taking my pre chemo doses. Hurrah!

Hugs to all

I was so freaked out by my diagnosis I couldnt read anything - this is the first time I have been brave enough to come on a forum and I was diagnosed in MAy 2016 - so well done you having the guts to read any of that stuff.  You are a lot braver than you think.

But if it isnt doing you any good then maybe do what I did - get a close friend to read it all so that when things happen she can confirm if it is a normal side effect or not - she can filter out the noise and just give you the headlines to watch for.

I've just had a call from the breast care doctor to advise me that the MRI scan has shown up something in my right armpit (I know I've got lymph node involvement in left armpit) and something else in my left breast to accompany Humphrey. So they're sending me an appointment for an ultrasound. Why has it taken nearly 2 weeks for the results to get through? I'm just about managing to feel awake today and get my head round this whole cancer thing and wallop, lets hit you with some more 😪😪😪

You’re not alone, Fiona. I decided to walk the 2.5 miles to my appointment yesterday to get some fresh air, and felt good so jogged home. Boy did I regret that come 5 pm! 🤦‍♀️😂 I was falling asleep on my feet! Literally could not deal with my little one when she woke and was sad from 1-2 am, as I could not for the life of me stay awake. Had to get my husband to take over.🙈 So I really do think we are more susceptible to becoming overly tired from seemingly normal activities.

Aneeebel, I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been unwell again and have had to deal with a fever and low blood counts. I hope the antibiotics sort you out and you start to feel better soon. Hang in there! I’ve declared that I’m quitting more than once, 🙈 but I know I’ll rock up for round two tomorrow anyway! 😂💪💕

Love to all. Hope those who are struggling to sleep overnight can squeeze in a daytime nap! Xox

Morning All

I hope you're all feeling a tiny weeny little bit better today?  You're all scaring me for round 2 though!  Somebody stop the ride, I want to get off!!!

ElliesMum - it sounds like a right concoction you've got there! But fingers crossed they do the job for you this time.

Aneeebel - so sorry to hear you had a fever but pleased to know you're at home fixing it.  I think it's always better to be at home.

To all those non-sleepers, Lou45, Mrs Fingers, all of you - I don't have the steriod problem, I think I'm a bit like Kateday and could sleep for hours!  I went for a nice and slow 4 mile walk with my parents yesterday and by 8pm I was fast asleep.  I do seem to wake up between 4 and 5 most mornings, and feel shattered today.  I might just have to go and have a lie down now!

Badboob - hope the yoga went well!  The mental image I have ... absolutely hilarious.

I don’t seem to have had trouble sleeping well I do wake early around four but normally I go bed at ten and up at 6 now I’m sleeping almost 18 hours a day that first dose literally took me of my feet and to say I’m all ready dreading the second is an understatement but I will speak woth consultant to sort some different meds out
I’m hoping to at least get out for some fresh air today
I have drank so much water I’m surprised I haven’t lived on the toilet
And my daughter asked me yesterday so two days post chemo if my hair was falling out
So I had to explain it doesn’t happen straight away 😊
