Research for Patient Benefit

A proposal for the following study is being submitted for funding to an organisation called Research for Patient Benefit. Breast Cancer Care is supporting this research by consultant Gynaecologist Dr Swati Jha. She is interested in exploring the impact of breast cancer treatment on ER+ positive breast cancers, and to explore options for the effectiveness of treatments for women who are menopausal. If you are happy to answer 3 questions to provide an evidence base for this initial stages of this work, please do feel free to complete the survey below. It doesn’t require that any personal details are provided.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/BZTNGL7

Breast cancer treatment can make a woman menopausal. One of the side effects of this is symptoms relating to the menopause. The impact the menopause has on your vagina is called GSM (Genito Urinary Syndrome of the menopause) also called atrophy. This leads to sexual pain and discomfort  amongst  other things. This would normally be treated with oestrogen cream but in some Breast Cancer patients due to the risk of the cancer coming back this is not an option. One of the treatments shown to work for GSM is Vaginal Laser treatment which does not carry the risk of the cancer coming back. This treatment is not currently available on the NHS and costs up to £3000 for treatment privately. This will only be funded on the NHS if we conduct a study showing benefit.
