Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

Sorry ladies, been so busy in the Land of NED it's a while since I dropped by to top up the various dispensers. Raised about £400 for bcc Ben Nevis with my coffee morning so very happy about that.

Oooh yes please toffee apples and bonfires - but can I have a fan for my flushes? Speaking of which, Katy and I won gold in the Olympic synchronised flushing, but the tv people obviously don't show such specialist events. I mean, we're only about 50km apart (according to Google) so the skill involved is clearly minimal...

Spoons in, hankies ironed, alligators thwacked and boingy stuff inspected! Back to work now for a rest!! 😉
Enjoy your lunches and gardens!

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

A benchland bonfire, yes please!! I'll just get the washing in first.. Can we have toffee apples? And mugs of soup? Hang on though, it's "summer"... Forget the soup, let's have pimms!
I enjoy reading about your garden, please keep posting about it. I have an undergrowth outside my back door which needs reclaiming, I must get out there soon and make a start.
Foxyferret, thank you yes, I should!! I know I should... Trouble is I felt sooooooooo cr*p on chemo and now I've got a bit of energy back I want to get on with things....but like you say, it can't be done straight away...so frustrating but hey, in the grand scheme of things having to sit down for a couple of hours with a book and a cuppa ain't that bad!
Taking my son out for lunch today to celebrate finishing sixth form and end of exams (a bit late, never mind) so later on I will be on the ate too much bench 😄

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

I wouldn't call what I've been doing in the jungle "gardening", that kind of assumes a bit of knowledge, and a degree of creation rather than the destruction I've been wreaking. It's more like "garden clearance", the only planty thing I've done is hang up a fuschia hanging basket I got from Tesco! I'm feeling smug though, I managed to overcome my highly sensitised procrastination gene and didn't put off doing the garden "because the blackberries will be ready soon" and it's beginning to look like a proper garden. Next job, clear the gravel to one side, coat the ground with Pathclear, re-lay some ground fabric and put the gravel back. Will have to treat the decking to some loving care as it's looking a bit sorry for itself, and the pergola is still in need of some emergency surgery to prevent it from falling down. Also have to replace the border edging because what was there disintegrated under the weeds. I very much doubt that I'll ever do anything properly creative and actually PLANT anything! There's a very high attrition rate with things that grow in my garden, except for the weeds of course.

FF, I have a kind of triangular plot (it's an inside corner so the entrance is just wide enough to get the car in. When I bought the house the back bit (one corner of the triangle, if you get what I mean) was beautifully done with decking and pergola in the very corner, a border with plants in, and gravel. But the weeds and brambles got it while I wasn't looking. The rest WAS really beautiful as the previous owner was into her garden. I still have a cooking apple tree and a plum tree, and a beautiful magnolia, but I've killed off an ornamental cherry and a pear tree, and the lawn is now an undulating meadow interspersed with anthills.

Goodness me, I would never have imagined ever telling people about what I've done in my garden, apologies for boring you. (It is rather satisfying getting busy with the loppers though.)

And I didn't do the bike today, just a bit more tidying up and construction of yet another bonfire. The one the other evening went up beautifully, so probably another one tomorrow night if it doesn't rain. Marshmallows on sticks, anyone? I'm also going to wrap some spuds in foil and shove them in the bottom of the fire. Won't bother with fireworks, I think there's been enough excitement recently, does anyone want to join me for a Benchland bonfire? Anything else in the form of entertainment?

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

Wow, £2.80!! Don't spend it all at once! Sounds like a brilliant day out. I live fairly near Taunton racecourse, will keep an eye out. Hope you get on all right at the hospital tomorrow. Will keep fingers crossed.
I find I get tired about about three hours after I get up in the morning, so I rest then for a while and then seem to get a second wind and am ok for the rest of the day as long as I don't do TOO much. Which ,of course I'm not doing as I'm glued to the Olympics.

CM, nice to have company on the bench today. Steady on with the gardening, don't exhaust yourself. I am intrigued by what you are finding in your garden. How big is your garden? Mine is about 20' square and all I find is, weeds, and evidence of next doors cat!

Ali H , my advice is to learn to pace yourself............................and if I could just learn to take my own advice I might feel better!!!!!!!We all just try to take up life as normal as soon as possible, and it can't be done.

Best wishes to all.

Your day out sounds like fun Katytc, I'll certainly keep an eye out for something like that! Hubby still says no to a kitten....but yes to a new oven!

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

I'm on the Olympics bench too, I just love it.
Yesterday I went to the races, first time ever and had no idea how to bet or anything so it was interesting!! I did win, wait for it £2.80, yahoooooooooooo!!! It was a day out for specifically for people with cancer, we had our own box, soft drinks sandwiches etc all free due to the kindness of the racecourse manager. His wife had cancer and he wanted to give people a happy and different day out, it was really good fun and we had a lot of laughs. He is hoping it will roll out all over Britain in the not too distant future, so check a racecourse near you.
So off to the "truly tired" bench, early night off to hospital tomorrow, no rest for the wicked.
FF I seemed to have energy whilst having rads but around 2 weeks after finishing I kept falling asleep ( could sleep for hours) it's still early days for you so if you are tired get off to bed and no feeling guilty!!
Ali, hope you can twist your husbands arm and you are allowed a kitty.
Hope you are all ok xx

I've been on the done too much and knackered myself out bench - well, bed actually! So had a very pleasant siesta...now of course I won't sleep tonight, ah well.....

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

I've taken a day off doing stuff today, and have just spent the day with FF on the Olympics bench in front of the telly. Clearly Team GB needed me to be WATCHING them in order to win golds!

Have found lots of other balls in the garden, a toy pistol, several more plastic boxes (no idea where they came from) and a couple of rather nice plants hidden behind the brambles.

Think I'll go and put a new battery in my motorbike and see if it'll start. I don't hold out a lot of hope, it hasn't been used for about 2 years! (Or maybe I'll just watch the gymnastics instead...)

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

Ali H - work on husband, tell him how much a kitten would aid your recovery etc........stroking animals is known to lower blood pressure etc........hmmm.
I nearly aquired a 20 week old cat which was in need of a good home ,I love cats and heard of this one through friends I asked the usual questions (sex/colour/vacinated/neutered) and asked for a picture via facebook. Picture never materialised and I can only presume that the cat has now found a home, as a week has passed.I'm not actively looking for a cat but if one occurs.......

I'm stuck on the watching Olympics bench. Planning work around what is on TV. Thank goodness its holidays so I can work flexi-time. Feeling ok ish, tiredness still hits now and again but I think its getting better, or is that just because I'm spending so much time sitting down watching Olympics?

Hope everyone is all right.

I'm on the "I would like a cat" bench. My cat died two summers ago, miss the purring! Two weeks ago my sister bought a rag doll kitten...so cute... Today my aunt took me to help her bring HER rag doll kitten home. Sigh. Hubby says no... 😉

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

Really CM, you did NOTHING in the last 18 months??? I seem to remember you did loads (be brave/inspirationa/lookbeautifulwithouthair/assortedotherrubbish) just none of it in the garden! Well done you though! No wonder you were UNDER the bench.... and not from incahol either! I did some gentle pottering and cutting back... and varied what I did regularly, so my arm survived. Tooth didn't! Stopped for lunch and temporary crown showed just what "temporary" meant, adn broke! Been using temporary filling till I can phone the dentist this morning.... time to try soggy cereal now... Mammo this morning.....
have a good week in Benchland.... love Jane

Thank you, happy mad etc etc RevCat! Liking spoon theory, makes sense.
Chocciemuffin, my garden is out there somewhere if you fancy another challenge, I vaguely remember it having fruit in it too....

Have a good day ladies, may your cutlery drawer be always full 🙂

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

I did write a post a few days back, but like so many other people's, it disappeared into the ether.

I'm under the knackered bench. Would be on it, but it's too much effort to get up onto it. I've been out in my jungle (can't call it a garden) for several hours every day for a week, and I am now pooped, but sadly not finished.

As you will understand, I did NOTHING in my garden over the last 18 months, having had other things to occupy my time, but now I've finished Herceptin (yay!!!) and jacked in a job that was just too far away for me to cope with, I thought I needed to do something positive and visible, so have decided to do a lot of decluttering. And seeing as the weather's been so rubbish at the beginning of July, I thought my garden could do with a bit of attention. Can I please have the gold medal for understatements?

While I was clearing just the back bit (a small triangle about 20 feet each side) I found: decking and a pergola (knew they were there, just hadn't seen them for a while), two large plastic chairs (didn't know they were there), a bed frame! (don't ask), a decorative chimney pot, half a dozen balls from various neighbours, four plastic crates, two kids' bikes, four big planters, a table and four chairs (russian vine had grown through them so I had to cut them free!) and privet trees 15 feet tall. I have a MOUNTAIN of cuttings in a pile drying out, that's going to be a helluva bonfire when it goes up.

Almost forgot about the toy lion and a bird's nest (from last year).

Also discovered just how prickly brambles are. I feel like the prince in Sleeping Beauty.

Tomorrow's jobs: emergency repair on the pergola. The weight of all the vine that had grown on it has caused it to crack, so I bought some metal braces today, while out playing taxi-driver, to screw onto it tomorrow. More bramble clearing - just hope the gloves dry out. Might do some stuff IN the house, if I can be bothered. While I've been outside, the inside of the house has turned into a bombsite. Have several mountains of dirty clothes (do they BREED?) and the washing up has taken over the kitchen completely. Oh, and several more trips to the dump. Got to put the bicycles, chairs and assorted bits of crap from inside my house somewhere.

Right, just thinking about that lot has me exhausted, so I'm off to my pit. Nighty night, lovely ladies, and if any of the aligators feel like taking a bite out of me while I lie on the boingy stuff under the bench, they'll soon be put off by all the brambles sticking out of me, so I'm safe.

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

For info on spoons follow this link http://www.butyoudontlooksick.com/articles/written-by-christine/the-spoon-theory-written-by-christine-miserandino/ it was one of my better finds. Basically spoons are units of energy, and the spoon theory a helpful way of explaining the impact of redcued energy levels to family and friends.

Sorry about you Dad's crass remark... it sounds all too familiar to me and I'm sure to others. You should feel no guilt, chuck it in the lake, and obey the "no fishing" and "no swimming" signs. The lake is the home of the alligators, and they are regularly dispatched back there.

Hope you are OK. All food in Benchland is free of any nasties, so eat up and enjoy. I am very happy cos my coffee morning has raised over £350 towards my BCC Ben Nevis climb. Sold all the cupcakes and most of the 'bring and buy'.
Today my flushes are of gold medal calibre, and my joints uber ouchy, but life is good and I'm a happy, mad, flying, climbing, Catcake-baking, cat-loving, vicar-type person.

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

Have read back a few pages, found the guilt lake. Added to it, mainly my well-meaning Dad's comment that "it's worse for the people who love you, you know". And, how should you react when people tell you how worried they are about you, and how worried your family are about you, and how much worry you're causing...like I've not noticed??? Is there a bench for that, probably the "I didn't choose to have BC " bench....

Could someone explain about the spoons please??? 🙂

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

On the knackered bench tonight.
Yesterday, we dropped off two kids at Stansted, shipped them off to France where we will join them next week end. Then off to pic up daughhter n1 in Cambridge where she is spending the summer doing research in biology. We decided to do touristy stuff around norfolk. Lots of sight seeing walking and eating. Great week end, I need a rest.
Twinky, I hope you can find a solution toget financial help and rest a bit more.
I can't be asked with the Olympics, still I watched the opening ceremony with the kids. Hubby is watching the swimming while I am on the Ipad.

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

Quiet in benchland today. Everyone watching Olympics?? I love watching (some) sports, it's the nearest I get to excercise! Today I found myself getting quite excited over the beach volleyball. What's going on? I think I've caught Olympic fever! Anyone know of a cure?

I feel sorry for our GB team. The commentators and the press are putting SO much pressure on them to do as well, if not better, than in Beijing. A lot can change in four years. I really hope the media don't make them feel they are failures if they don't perform as well as they did then. To defend a gold medal can't be easy. Maybe I've not put this well but I hope you know what I mean. They have all done brilliantly just to get there!!

Have been baking today, so lemon drizzle cake and cupcakes available (some slightly mis-shapen but still taste good) are on offer by the"have a rest"bench. Go well with tea/coffee/glass of wine.

Hope everyone has had a good weekend.

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

Trying to resist putting the TV on because I really should be packing, but I'm having a body-says-no day again all of a sudden. Didn't do THAT much yesterday! Once I start watching I'll be hooked and haven't got the time. We will miss all the rest as we'll be in a tent (no electric) for the next 2 weeks anyway! Which is why, of course, the weather has suddenly deteriorated!! I hate to say it, but I told you it would!!
Bung the maltesers and Catcakes over here - I need some motivation! Coffee on it's own doesn't seem to be cutting it!

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

Am joining you JCJ on the "CBA" bench, have had a busy couple of days and am just tired now, trying to motivate myself but it's not working, keep having another cup of tea, enjoy your hols!
I enjoy the Olympics especially track and field and gymnastics, you may have seen me practising on the "boingy" stuff, dodging alligators as I go, seem to be improving greatly with my tumbling. The malteesers have def helped.
So hopefully very quiet day, have a good book to read and lots of sweeties, bliss............xx

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

Thanks for the maltesers Ali - welcome to the mad house....

Twinky, Macmillan offered to help me sort out finances when I went down to half pay AND my employers sent me a form to fill in to get ESA (Employmetn Support Allowance) which you can claim on half pay - JobCentrePlus were very helpful and efficient in the processing of that, and it helped until I could go back. Not sure about your employer, but mine (the NHS) paid me full pay from the day I went back even though I was on a phased return, so I consider myself very lucky. Small companies can't afford to do that...

on the "can i be bothered iwth the olympics" bench with a glass of wine ... which will be followed by Catcakes...if anyone wants to join me

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

Virtual maltesers never run out! Welcome Ali - and you would be welcome without the maltesers - but they do help!

FF, ladle in hand, I reiterate what others have said. You have friends on here. Found myself wishing I lived nearer to Devon to help you gang up on scare-mongering 'friend'. I, too, am trying hard to play down my BC - 83% chance of it not coming back is OK with me!! (ooh cue for a pome??)

Twinks. Don't rush back - aren't there agencies you can call on - Macmillan? - to help financially. If you go back too soon you'll only be off again with exhaustion. Perhaps go back half time, at first, if you're only on half pay anyway??

On the Really should be packing bench but it seems to have morphed into the can't be a**ed bench. Why did I agree to go out on Sat night when we go away on Sunday??

I will have some maltesers please , there is a little train coming your way, you can put a few in a carriage. Press the red flashing light, it will go choo choo and off back to me again.
After all the real celebrations, it is time to get some calorie free goodies.
Revcat, how can you bake in this weather? You must be drenched. All for a good cause. I hope your fundraising event goes well. On the relaxed bench tonight, enjoying the quietness of benchland.

Katytc- I think I just respond with I'll just trust my oncologist who's had many years years of experience rather than you who's had none!!

Revcat - Thank you for the thwacking ladle ,will apply it if apology not forthcoming soon. Sorry you've been drownified but glad my silly imaginings made you laugh.

Oh yes, cupcakes (Catcakes) I'll have a blueberry one please.

Both of you . thank you for making me feel better.

Glad I came in again because now I can munch some of those delicious cupcakes, thank you to the flying, rock climbing lady vicar hee hee xx

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

Here FF borrow a large thwacking ladle and apply it to your (ex-)friend. I hope she realises what a dimwit she is and apologises soon. It is so hard to be far from your friends at any time, let alone when you have the monster bc to deal with. You should rejoice in your good prognosis, and live the way you want to live, and she has no right to pour scorn on that. Sadly, some people seem to delight in negativity.

It has been warm here today (Scotland but south from Katy) and my melting moments have been spectacularly drownified. By the way, you had me in tucks of laughter with the image of lady vicar half way up a rock face!

Been baking yet more cupcakes (or Catcakes as one of my bcc friends has re-named them) for my bcc coffee morning... capuccino, choc, blueberry, lemon, vanilla... all waiting to be decorated. Then it is scones (plain and cheese) and I think I'm done (done in anyway!)

Big hugs to anyone who needs tehm

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

FF jaw just dropped, then started to laugh WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT WOMAN????????????????
She sure is full of positivity, oh my how do you respond to that???? xx

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

Katytc - yes , there can be a big difference in weather between Scotland and where I am in Devon. It's been so hot here today I've stayed indoors. Hope you're not still cold!

Not sure what bench to be on tonight, had coffee today in town with lady that used to be an aquaintance but was becoming more of a friend as we met up more and more and seemed to be on the same wavelength, we've been to each others houses, I've met her OH and we started to meet up more often, Get the picture?? Today she told me that I was trivialising my bc (because of my good prognosis) and that it would be sure to be back at some point because "it" always get you!! Yeah, thanks for that!! I made my excuses and left soon after.
Now I think she's an ex friend, I don't need that that opinion but it is a shame as I don't make friends easily and since I moved down here my real friends are miles away, so perhaps on the feeling sorry for myself bench? Or on the FF bench ,does she know more than my oncologist?? Or on the bewildered bench? I just don't know. Will put it to the back of my mind and wait until she gets in touch and then have a real good think about what to do.
Sorry to moan but she upset me and I know that you will all "get" it.

Years ago was talked into camping but put foot down and insisted on trailer tent, so not sleeping on ground. Also insisted on heater for warmth (I like my creature comforts) and did actually enjoy quite a few holidays under canvas.

Laughing re the camping, only did camping once with the Girl Guides, horrific experience! Food c****, tent horrible, rained constantly and the beasties yugh!! My Mum sent me off with a special goody bag and when I opened the cake bag there was a huge beetle lurking inside arghhhhhhhhhhhhh!
So no happy memories there, did do caravanning and loved that!
There has been a little sunshine today but not enough to bask in the rays , FF I'm in Scotland xx

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

JCJ - You did tell me, but I just didn't quite "get" the message obviously.I am finding it so difficult not to take life at full speed like before. Worked again today but less hours and only did tea making and watching and feel fine now.........except that I can see that daughter has made a much better job of cleaning the carpets than I do. I may have to worry about that next year!!!!!!

Vercours - that is EXCELLENT news, so pleased for you. Yes, the sun is shining, so can I please be totally British about this and complain that it is actually TOO hot?!!! Up in the eighties is too much for me I'm afraid.
Katytc - don't know where you are but cold? Really??

Revcat - thank for sorting the alligators I'm sure one was eyeing me up for his dinner earlier. Mountain climbing? That gave me a instant mental vision of lady vicar in full clerical robes, pitons and crampons, halfway up a sheer rock face!!! Ben Nevis for BCC? Good luck!

JCJ, mmmmmmmmmmmmm I'm not sure if the outdoor lake is going to work, I can see people getting muddled especially the ones who have lost their marbles and they may accidently jump into the guilty lake, things may get a bit messy and confusing for the "bewildered" ones.

Signs of healing, Vecors!! Yipee! Calorie free champers on ice!! Hope you are soon back on herceptin and can now put all those niggles in perspective. We all do that paranoid worrying. I spent last night in a panic because my left arm and boob hurt (BC side) - then realised it was more likely to do with pruning the hedge than a recurrance!! 🙂

Well done RevCat on your mountaineering and good luck for Ben Nevis. Way too hot here for that kind of caper. Broken out in a megga-sweat just hooverin downstairs (not a euphemism!! ) and mopping the kitchen floor (neither is that!) and I don't THINK it's Tamoxifen/Zoladex related!

Can we have a guaranteed-alligator-free outdoor swimming lake in Benchland?? I love swimming outdoors - preferably with no screaming brats about! Could just do with a dip in the sea now.............pity the nearest is over 100 miles away 😞

MRI scan and CT scans show no progressions of the hip mets. They even show signs of healing! Hoorray!
It is unreal how the smallest ache seems to get our mind racing a five millon miles an hour!
Herceptin might resume next week!
And the sun is shinning.
I am so relieved!

FF - very tempted to say "What did I tell you??!" We have no idea how fit (or not) we really are until we attempt to do what we usually do!

I booked our campsite the other night, for 2 weeks from Sunday 29th - then ended up on the CSL bench at the THOUGHT of getting all the camping gear sorted - but I was very tired after day 4, consecutively that week, at work! Usually I'm off camping, with my daughter, the day after term ends, but luckily she couldn't get the time off work this year - so I'm going with her at the end of August and with OH next week. Time to get organised....slowly... when I've recovered from 1st full week at work!!

Got blackcurrant jam bubbling away on the stove - so I'd better print the labels, which is what I actually turned the computer on for!

"Latest posts" is working for me JCJ but I've just tried to reply to you and it just disappeared into the ether, so Ill try again, but maybe a little more briefly. Went back to work today,in just the supervisory category to my daughter, who only let me make the tea, but me being me tried to do more to help her and then just realised how UNFIT for work I really am. Woah, today has told me, in no uncertain terms to take it easy, only hope I am fit for full return in Sept.
Mind, we weren't helped by the fact that we were hit by Murphys'Law (whatever can go wrong WILL go wrong) the carpet cleaner that school hired did not work and had to be exchanged so this added to the total hours worked. Tomorrow is another day so will do less and then will have 5 days off (hours are being spread over six weeks).

Hope everyone is feeling more cheered due to the change in the weather, its really lovely here today, and yesterday I had a lovely day. My Son got the BBQ out invited myself and daughters family so a good get together and great food!! I'm so lucky that they both live nearby.

Off to rest up a bit now and watch Superstar - have to admit I saw it the first time around!!

Golly gosh, everyone has been very busy while I've been on hols with the Girls. In our wee campervan - Beryl the Bongo - to the NY moors and the Yorkshire coast. AND IT WAS SUNNY NEARLY ALL WEEK so now I'm on the Smug and Relaxed Bench.
It won't last, it's started to rain now I've got home.....................

Re: stop feeling guilty, small rant (BENCHLAND)

On the pleased with myself bench. I had a full day with little time to fret about MRI results on Tuesday. I spent all day restoring a chair, it is almost finished and I am very pleased with the Results. Tomorrow I am off walking along the Thames, with two of my kids, a nephew and a friend. This will be my last walk before the end of August as I am busy next couple of week ends and then it is HOLIDAY TIME. I do hope to have finished walking the length of the Thames by mid September.
