Last pic sideways. Too much wine consumed to be able to fix it.
Plenty of delicious cake in the shed!
Lovely day. The rain held off. I'm slightly drunk, slightly sunburnt, very hot and extremely proud of YD and her new wife.
The cake was amazing - everyone said so and even the wedding host said it was one of the best weddings she's "done". So relaxed.
The bridesmaids were, of course, incredible - but, strangely, seem to be missing off all the photos?!
You were right the first time JCJ
I'll be ready Katy, just giving the tiara and Doc Martens a final polish!
Day didn't start well! OH had a melt down. Panicking about his shaky hands in front of 50 people. I really felt for him. I'm uncomfortable in social situations but it's 100 x worse for him. Saturday travel also an issue again, but this time he admitted he's angry with the PD, not me!
BIL & I left without him - at his insistence. He wanted to come on his own later.
Uneventful journey. Gave BIL a guided tour of the city, after we checked into hotel, and bumped into other BIL and his "new" partner, who I'd never met before (OH and BIL1 had) then 10 mins later, bumped into nephew & his family!! It's a big city! What are the chances? Anyone would think there's some sort of family event on here this weekend?
The whole time, I'm putting on a brave face and hoping OH gets it together to get here!
However, he has now arrived and is ok - just about. We've eaten and he's gone off for a walk. Taxi booked for 11am to take us to wedding hotel tomorrow. I'll look out for the broomstick arriving with the world's most bizarre - sorry, beautiful - bridesmaids. I texted YD - she is out with uni friends having 10 year catch up!
It's VERY noisy outside this Travelodge tonight, but I can't shut the windows or we'll die of heat!
Enjoy your half-term JCJ. But REALLY, really enjoy this weekend. There is nothing like the Mother of the Bride moment. I've been there! The weather forecast is the same in my neck of the woods so hopefully all the rain will be down here! Katy and I will be flying in to be the bridesmaids in all our finery. Don't worry, we won't be late.
Congratulations to your daughter and her partner. I hope they have a long and happy life together!
In between the wedding festivities, I've got to sort my house out, so friends don't think I'm a total slob. I've got three days...... but thinking about it, the house is ok. Just a normal clean to be done. Just shut the door on the second bedroom/library, don't want anyone to see that.
Finished for half term. Hoorah! Weather scorching. Can't believe it though (I can, actually, it's just our luck!) Checked my phone at lunchtime, in case YD frantically messaging me for support in The Great British Wedding Cake Off. Message from Met Office: "severe weather warning for heavy rain and flash flooding for Sunday and Monday for one of your saved places" NOOOOO! Which one? Do I really even need to look? Of course, it's for Norfolk!! Hopefully, it will be so localised we miss it - or it will be overnight after the wedding. Everything crossed!
YD has sent me a photo of the finished cake. It looks great. And enormous. Should be some leftovers for the shed!
Quick cuppa, then more tidying before BIL's arrival.
Hope you're having a super fantastic holiday, KTC!!
Enjoy your friends' visit, FF. Hope everyone else reading this is OK!
Empty nest syndrome! They've all gone except for one sad little corpse.
Of course, they all went while I was at work. 5 there this morning, 2 of which were still much smaller, but they were all sitting out of the nest, around the box. Won't know what to do with myself now Bob fortnight is over!
I,m glad you managed to finally get your hair cut. That sounds a rather weird place you were in, are you sure she didn't sneak a cheeky tattoo onto your back?
I had mine cut yesterday and I look and feel a lot better for it.
Hospital letter waiting when I got home today. Knew what it was so no panic, just consultant appt on 8th June and hopefully I shall be signed off.
That sounds a really good plan of yours for next Sept. Much less stress and you'll feel so much better.
Dashed into town again determined to get hair cut. Arggghhhhhhh!! Closed at 3pm. It's now 4. Supposed to be open til 5:30. FFS!!
Found another open hairdressers/barbers and notice it's also non-appointment. Walk in. Pleasant greeting. Asked to sit in other room and wait. 3 other people waiting for one hairdresser but she's working fast. Then I look around and notice my surroundings. OMG! Spray paint graffiti, badly executed, all over the walls in a million different neon colours. A huge collection of - presumably empty- spray paint cans in the hearth. Geeez! If her artistic "skills" are like that, what will she do to my hair?? Tempted to run, but I *really* don't want to have to make a FOURTH trip into town and running out of time. How much damage can she do cutting a few inches off long straight hair?
As I wait, I watch the 2 male biker-type customers leave with their heads shaved. The female customer waiting has an already short, weirdly dyed 'do'. She leaves with it VERY short. Here goes...... My turn.....😱...... but it's fine. She cuts off the requested amount and it looks to be even. Phew! Won't be going back, (it cost more than my usual place and wasn't overly clean!) but at least I won't look a fright on the girls' wedding photos!! One advantage was the mirror. It wasn't your usual hairdresser horror, but an ornate gilt job with spray paint in random colours applied to the frame and some of the glass. It was so hideous, the apparition in the middle looked fine! Or it could be that I already felt so old and out of place that seeing me look reasonably like my normal self was a relief??!
Meeting with temp HT today. From September, I shall be relinquishing most of my whole class teaching. There'll still be some cover, "as and when", but not every day. Less money but much less stress, so I'm happy. When I do cover classes, I've made it clear they will have to pay me the difference - I'm determined they're not going to take the p...... Relieved to have made the decision. Perhaps I won't be so reluctant to go back after the summer holiday? I should also have more time to do the things I enjoy like the library and website.
Grrrr! Rushed marking. Dashed into nearby market town for haircut. Closed "staff shortage. Open tomorrow." Walked all round town - all other hairdressers closed on Mondays so no chance of blagging a last minute appointment anywhere else. Will have to shlepp over there again tomorrow. Grrrrr! At least I finally got to pay in BIL'S cheque for rail fare - before he arrives on Friday!! - I've been carrying it around for weeks: never near a bank when they're open! (Who uses cheques these days, anyway? I gave him my details to transfer it online!)
Horrible atmosphere at work. It feels like people are talking about me - but the whispered conversations are probably about something/someone else entirely. I'll just go and stand by the paranoid bench - won't sit down: it's probably booby trapped?!
One. More. Week. I. Can. Do. This.
Got to get hair cut after school today - they were closed on Saturday for one of the girls' wedding! Another one has broken her arm, so there could be a queue. (It's a no-appointment place because I refuse to pay silly money for a 5 minute trim!)
Meeting tomorrow to discuss my options at work. That's not going to be a barrel of laughs! I'll get through it by focussing on next weekend.
Son and family over today.Took Son an hour or so to fix the lamp as his first attempt to fix the in-line switch didn't work. A new in-line switch just not available in our shops down here, so he spliced the wires together and used insulating tape and the lamp now works. I will get a new in-line switch on the interweb and get him to fix that too.
I could have fixed the lamp last week (I'm no stranger to fixing plugs, fuses, wiring etc.) but I wanted him to do it as it was his son that broke it.
So a good day, family seen, lamp mended, only one more week to half-term and friends coming down.
Caught sight of two pigeons on a roof last night as I left school. One pounced on the other much fluttering of feathers, eggs will be in a nest somewhere. I averted my eyes, such rampant sex! I'm sure the home-owners knew nothing of the antics on their roof! I hope you see the fledging JCJ.
Have a haircut booked for Monday, very overdue but my hairdresser has been on holiday (how dare she) so I've had to wait for her to come back.
Lazy day today, read books bought at charity shop this week. Now watching tv programmes recorded in week.
Son and family over tomorrow, he's going to fix the lamp!
I need to clean my house too, friends from Herts. visiting in half-term but I've got time , I'll do it next Monday if the wedding hangover isn't too bad!
Have a great time, KTC!
Our babies are nearly ready to go! They were left home alone last night and I was very worried that something had happened to Babs, but both parents feeding them every few seconds this morning. Lots of wing flapping and preening from the biggest Boblet. Fledging due in the next few days.
Got to get a hair trim today ready for next week. Was going to leave it until after school, in the week, but hadn't better risk that. Also need to get OH to shift some of the piles of c*** he's got in the guest bedroom/study/plant growing room (no, not anything dodgy! It's just there's a massive West facing window, so he has trays of seedlings starting off in there - for the allotment). Loads of cleaning to do too. Suddenly seeing how much of a pigsty the place is, now that B-I-L coming!!
Hope you have a lovely holiday Katy, wherever you are going, I've forgotten, if I ever knew! My mind has gone on holiday these last few weeks, I blame the drugs The posh bit? Ooh la la! I'll be waiting for you at 11.30. on the day.
Not sure ALL of GD's school now in the loop but more of them are and hopefully it will sort of seep through.
I'm with Katy, JCJ get rid of the school stress, your life will be better for it, even if a bit of belt tightening is needed.
Think it's a really good idea JCJ, the less stress the better, as you say you only live once!
How many hours will you do?
FF, glad GD's school are all in the know now, difficult for children as they do all wish to be the same, it depends on how different the adjustments are. Obviously she doesn't want to stick out like a sore thumb, things may be worked out very discreetly for her, fingers crossed.
Am basically organised now woo hoo, just found out last night we are in the posh bit of hotel! YD decided very last minute that she doesn't want to be here on her own so she is heading for the sunshine too, different country from us. The prices at the same place we are were horrendous, nobody would pay that amount??
Will be appearing sporadically over the next while but will pick you up at 11.30am FF, for The Wedding of the Year.
Sending my very best wishes to the happy couple, have a brilliantly, fantastical time!!
PS Remember your tiara xx
Another mile and a bit swum tonight. Now rounding the SW corner of Guernsey.
No records broken. Nearly had to get out after first 50 lengths due to galloping cramp in both shins and one foot, but I managed to kick it out.
So tired though. Didn't sleep last night. Stressed. More trouble at work Only 8 working weeks left until a nice long break from it all, and I think I shall be reducing my responsibilities (and salary ) in September. Can't handle the stress. Life's too short - much too short in my family?!
Oh gosh! Now I feel really bad. I didn't mean to offend - quite the opposite - I was pointing out the inappropriateness (impropriety?) of 7 year Old's contribution to the science lesson - and ended up being inappropriate myself! Sorry, Anna!
Saw your post had been edited by Admin, so thought I'd better edit mine too. Don't want to get into trouble!
Babysat GD for about 30 mins, she was in a mood. A 2 year old having a snit, I found it amusing but it won't be as funny when she's a teenager! She cheered up when I put Cbeebies on. Daughter and SIL were going into other GD's school in answer to a letter about her poor attendance level.
Once again this is a result of no communication within the school. She has an ongoing medical problem. She has a medical exit card that she can show and exit lessons with no questions asked. Her teachers are aware of this but others just look at the attendance statistics. She has had three weeks off sick in two terms. The people that they met today had no idea that she had that card. Her needs were yet again explained.
In the end it turned out to be a good meeting. More help can be offered to her if she wants it (she won't, she hates anything that calls attention to her). Exams, GCSE's (still four years away) can be tailored to her needs. School just needs documented evidence. Oh, there's a shed load of that!
Definitely best to leave the last bit out of the equation, dogs just chase cats, that's true but loved his/her chain. One of my year 2's said wolves were cuddly, furry dogs!
Rained all day here, just love it. Hoping for the wettest summer on record, sorry!
You are bad JCJ, early Sat, bad, bad girl!!
Busy painting my toenails, then will have a muggatea if I can find a clean mug, no dishes done yet but lots of things sorted, woo hoo!!
Still have never used dishwasher...............
ED's car hopefully fixed today, lastest by tomorrow fingers crossed as we are all going in her car?? xx
When are you going KTC? Thought it wasn't until the end of the month: same weekend as the wedding? No wonder your clothes get creased if they're packed for that long?!?!
The book was "Do No Harm: Stories of Life, Death and Brain Surgery" by Henry Marsh (no idea why I called him Henry Moore - that was another guy! )
I got it for about £1 on a Kindle deal. Worth every penny! I heard him on the radio recently; he has another book out now too, which I may read sometime, although it may just be more of the same.
Today's funny at school: Y2 child in a science lesson about food chains (what eats what)
grass ➡ insect ➡ bird ➡ cat ➡ dog ➡ (edited)
Hahahaha! I didn't know what to say to her. Just explained that dogs don't eat cats - they just chase them!
Glad you were better after eating JCJ!
Oh no, no toothbrushing....................
Suitcase almost all packed, woo hoo, only have to put in stuff I use each day, very small amount, have a new case this year and it's a very fat little thing, reminds me of that mirror when I was trying on trousers!!
Had GS today, such a boy, so loads of vroom vrooms, game of upside down on his head, which he loves and the best jumping off the worktops into my arms...............
Decided to slice my finger, ofcourse it would be the lynn one.
We had sunshine today xx
Raining again here today, lovely, I love rain! Not a lot happening, daughter called in. I'm required to babysit youngest GD tomorrow for a short while tomorrow. No problem, just need to be up early!
What is the book JCJ? Sounds like something I would like to read.
Raining here too.
I was much better about an hour after eating dinner, KTC, so it was probably just low blood sugar, but it was weird because I didn't feel in the least bit hungry (very unlike me!)
I wouldn't have read the book if I'd known it had a (very small) section about BC mets. It was a fascinating insight into the life of a neurosurgeon, which I enjoyed reading. It's only afterwards that the BC part has started playing on my mind! I'm so flippin' neurotic these days!! Never used to be a hypochondriac!
Well, must away to another day in the mad house. Must remember to clean my teeth this morning: got half way to work, yesterday and realised I'd forgotten. "1/5 for cleanliness!" What a slut. Hastily grabbed mint from handbag so at least it smelt like I'd cleaned them.
A giant spider just needs a violent connection with a large shoe! That is my way of dealing with them
Bam! No more spider!
Hope 6/7 chicks doing well, so much better than last year.
Raining here too, so feeling a lot better. School a mess, they've been painting. Paint all over the place, on the desks, the chairs, the doors, the door handles, the sinks where they've been sent to wash their hands.......just paint everywhere.
Are you better today JCJ?? No reading those kind of books ever, ever.................
Brain is awful for playing those tricks without an added influence.
Chicks are doing well, will be great when they start leaving the nest, trying to fly etc, you will get the chance to see them all properly. Happy days!
A MIL??? an official title haha, will be wonderful.
Glad your humidifier is working again, whew, also better your son fixes lamp, FF.
Went out for my muggachoc today, slurpy, slurp, then into town for last hopefully bits and bobs, was drenched on the way home!
YD has just asked me to go into the outside stairwell, she has just shown me a giant spider, aaargh,
get it to the Sanctuary asap, she is too scared to go out the back door now, so am I xx
6 chicks, at least, getting featherier by the hour. Babs still doing headstands excavating the nest. There may still be 7, but the nest is now so deep we can't tell who's underneath. Only seen 6 at any one time though.
Humidifier seems to be working properly again so have not taken it back but will watch it and see. Receipt put safely away in case of need.
Why not spend money on something you enjoy? Do NOT read books about brain surgery and bc mets. Really? Why? Sounds as if you were just in need of food. Hope you feel better now.
Rules for a MIL ;
1) Never interfere.
2) Never give unasked for advice.
3) Remain totally impartial.
5) Keep your sense of humour.
6) Refer to the above.
I am fortunate to have great relationships with both my SIL and DIL. I've had each of them for about 13 years and we now understand where we're all coming from. But it took a while of time and tact to get there. And I still follow the above rules.
I am sure that the lamp fix will work but I'm going to make Son do the work as it was his boys that broke it.So that won't be until next weekend.
Cake , lots of cake, a cream tea in the village hall as part of the money raising for the new playground, leftovers from that and then a Gruffalo birthday cake for GD. Restrict yourselves to a small slice, it's very rich.
PS. Did you manage to get a new humidifier, FF? Did your lamp fix work? CAKE you say? *scurries off to the shed*.
Definitely 6, possibly 7 chicks still growing apace and being fed lots of sunflower hearts, spiders, unidentifiable insects, fat ball chunks and bits of peanut. The oldest one is now starting to look like a bluetit as it's developing the colouring on its head. Their eyes have opened.
I spent a ridiculous amount of money on bird food yesterday, but, in my defence, I get so much pleasure from watching all the birds on the feeders - even the starlings, and sometimes even the FB pigeons!! It's cheaper than keeping pets and all the more satisfying because I know they're here because they choose to be!
Two weeks today I'll be a mother in law! Ooh! Er! M. says it was mental in Lisbon last night as the Pope was there on Friday, Portugal won some big football thing on Saturday AND they won Eurovision. I teased her by saying they'll want her to visit again!
Spent most of the afternoon gardening but had to stop because I suddenly felt terrible. Headachey and a bit sort of dizzy. Too much sun? Unlikely, it's not been THAT sunny. Too much bending? The Lurg that's been going around school? Sunday dinner went down well (Roast lamb etc etc followed by lemon tart (bought), blackcurrants stewed in honey and Yoo Moo frozen yoghurt. Didn't think I was hungry, but I was. Maybe that's what was wrong? Going to sit quiet with a cuppa and try not to think scary thoughts. I sooo wish I hadn't read Sir Henry Moore's book about brain surgery, specifically the bit about BC mets in the brain. Yet another demon on the shoulder to contend with!! Happily trundling along, everything is fine. BC is just a thing in the past. Then, BAM! slightest symptom and I'm back on the worry bench. It's ridiculous!! Got to get a grip!
Humidifier no longer working, looking for receipt, I know it's in the car somewhere. A very good excuse to clean the car out. Result, one cleaned out car and the receipt is found! Will be taking back the humudifier and exchanging it tomorrow.
It will be a family day tomorrow, one of GD's will be 7 years old so a celebration and CAKE! Leftovers in the shed as usual.
Aaah FF, this pic was taken when you were limbering up, because when you are actually spinning it's extremely hard to get a clear image, you are soooooooooooooo fast!!
Glad humidifier seems to be working for you
All quiet here, thank goodness, ran around all over the place yesterday, so am enjoying silence, tv not even on haha.
Pouring down here..................xx
Not the best pic of my skills. I can do better than that! Ok, you were surprised and had to do the best you could at the time!
There's always a runty, hope the others do well. Congrats on the swimming personal best. Must look up a map of Guernsey and see where you are.
TGIF, only two more weeks to half term, think I might survive them and then in half-term my friends from Herts. are coming down to visit. Looking forward to that.
Raining here today, so I'm feeling so much better. I've bought a humidifier and I think it's helping.
Aaah poor runty, lovely to see how quickly they are all coming on, success this year.
Well done for your super, duper swim!!
They def were not talking about you JCJ, you are a BLONDE!
Star Attraction FF and her head spinning, guests will be in awe, truly a memorable sight, who can forget her spinning around Eric?? Am positive all wedding guests will be thrilled to bits with the entertainment.
ED's car has decided to misbehave, hopefully will be fixed before our airport journey, and not too costly
After a lovely week of sunshine, it's gone horribly cold again, heating on, feet up and a muggatea methinks, brrrrrr xx
No sign of Runty. Looks like he didn't make it through the night. 7 chicks seem to be doing well. Bob & Babs regularly (constantly!) coming in with food. The chicks gape for feeding then tip upside down and present their rear ends to the parents (and the camera!) for poo sacs to be removed, many of which get dropped on our cars as the adults leave the nest!! Small price to pay for such a privileged view?
Babs spends a lot of time burrowing her head under the chicks. We think she's enlarging the nest (or entertaining them with the ferret dance??!) to accommodate the rapidly growing chicks.
It's extremely hard to get a decent photo because they're just a bundle of slightly feathery bodies and beaks - until the parents come in when they spring up and are moving so fast they're just a blur! We can clearly see wing feathers developing now.
We've spent hours watching them. It's fascinating!
Arggghh!! Just written a long post and accidentally clicked on something and opened up a new reply box. Post vanished. Arggghh!
Gist of post: 72 lengths-/1800m swum tonight. Personal best. Busy. Had to swim in fast lane. Nearly killed self keeping out of the way of Formula One swimmers. Lady in changing room after told me my swimming was "amazing" and that I was "an inspiration" to them. Smug. Head swells - almost too big to fit under shower.
Brought down to earth when overhear another 2 ladies talking about "that grey haired lady" and eventually realise they're talking about me!! "Grey haired!" Harrumph! No wonder they think I'm "an inspiration": they think I'm 90??!!
7 Boblets doing well. 8th, we call him Runty, is falling way behind and can't compete with his siblings for the food deliveries. It's hard to watch, but 7 out of 9 is not bad. Certainly better than last year....so far. I'll try and get another photo tomorrow so you can see how they've grown.
What's the betting they'll fledge the weekend of the wedding? "Sorry girls, we can't make it to your wedding, the chicks are fledging!! "
Y6 post-SATs party day tomorrow. Could be a lovely relaxed day - or hideous - it depends on the behaviour of 1 or 2 "characters" in the class!! No 8am breakfast club though, so at least I get a mini lie in!
You tell me NOW that I'M the main attraction?? I didn't sign up for that! I thought I was just a bridesmaid! And that dress is not what I thought, it's not floor length, it's not multi coloured! I'm having a panic attack! I'm throwing a tantrum, toys are a long way out of the pram!
And breathe, regroup and rethink. Knitted knickers are cast aside. If I'm doing the head spinning (and you all know that I do that at the drop of a hat after a couple of glasses of champers!) then I'm wearing the latest from La Perla!
Daughter called in today so nice to see her. We had a muggatea and a catch up and then we went into town and did various odd jobs and shopping.
Have today thought of a fix for the craft lamp, take out the in line switch, splice the wires together, insulating tape to keep the wires apart and it will turn on and off at the wall. I'll let you know if it works when I've done it, not sure if I've got the necessary tools. If not SIL has.
Have been on the "crazy busy" bench and am soooooooooooooo tired, zzzzzzzzz!
I just cannot "do" busy, busy anymore zaps all energy (well, can do it but leaves me exhausted)...............
This is the dress FF, how gorgeous will we be???
And this is the gift, will just bring it on the day!!
Soooooooooooooo excited xx
What? What? Are you not going to be doing your head spinning ferret Dance, FF? I was counting on that for the main attraction; there will be no speeches! Can you dye the knickers?
Last stupidly early start. Last Y6 breakfast. Last test today. Thank goodness, but the kids'll be as high as kites this afternoon.
GREEN? I've knitted mine in blue, omg, I shall ruin the wedding!!! What am I going to do? No time to knit another pair!.....Wait..... think...... neon dress is floor length, no one is going to see my knickers. Stripey socks all ready, have at least got that part right.
I have now got off the FF bench and after searching interweb have decided that I will replace lamp in Sept. when there is a Craft Fair in local city where I can see what I'm buying. For now, in these lighter evenings the magnifying part will do.
