Brain Mets - Anyone managed to get their driving licence back?

Was diagnosed last April with MBC with lung and liver mets.  Subsquent scan found bone mets which weren't picked up on the initial scans but oncologist thinks they were there.

In June this year I ended up hospitalised due to severe headaches.  Oncologist had schedule a CT scan including head as I also had some numbness in my left leg.  Didn't make it that far as got scanned when I was hospitalised.

Anyway, long story short, multiple brain mets showed up.  Finished whole brain radiotherapy about 6 weeks ago.

The whole thing is obviously a blow but I'm utterly devasted about having to give up my driving licence especially as my husband doesn't drive.  This is the only thing I've cried over since my initial diagnosis last year.  My oncologist, who is normally very level headed, said she'd only ever heard of a couple of people get their licences back.  However, the nurse specialist seemed very surprised that I'd been told this.

So I was interested to hear if anyone has successfully had their licence reinstated after brain met diagnosis and if so, how long did it take?  Understand everyone's circumstances are different.

Haha I have been trying over two years getting my drive license back. Oncology team say I tick two columns and they want to make sure! I live in village with no bus so I have to get a lift to town so I could get bus somewhere. If I have hospital it a lift to town then bus into city centre then bus to hospital!

if you have a blue badge you are initial to a bus pass be a disability bus pass.
but I do know of a lady who did get hers back but took awhile!

I’ve been diagnosed with brain mets and I’m struggling at the thought of not driving as it’s my independence. This is a huge blow and I know I have to do it but can’t imagine not driving! Did anyone else struggle? Was it permanent or temporary?

Hi Susan

thanks for your reply, I spoke to DVLA yesterday I have to surrender my liscence and may get it back in a year, there is a medical guideline book which anyone can access, called "assessing fitness to drive" on the DVLA website.

i am also going to look into getting a blue badge, and I maybe eligible for a bus pass if you have to give up your liscence due to a medical condition, that is definetly worth investigating...

good to hear your doing well, I am too, I had surgery and radiation (single dose gamma knife) in June, the shock of it all and wondering about the future are the hardest thing to cope with right now...

feel free to drop me a line anytime, good luck! 🍀

Hi Eileen,

I've not had any positive responses from anyone so not looking so good.  If I find anything else out I'll update here.

Not sure when your brain mets were diagnosed but I was told to cease driving immediately and surrender my licence.  Might be different if you were diagnosed a while ago and have just returned to the UK.  Might be worth giving the DVLA a call as the only info I can find is this - https://www.gov.uk/brain-tumour-and-driving.

Hope you're doing OK health wise.  I seem to be on the mend from the whole brain radiotherapy and my symptoms seem to be improving.  Can't complain too much other than about my sodding driving licence.

Hi Nicky,

Thanks for your reply.

Based on my oncologist's information is seems unlikely there are a lot of people who've had their licences back so was just curious.

I have a PIP and an Access to Work application in at the moment.  Don't need the money just now but will be good to have saved it for when I do.

I'll try the private group.

Thanks,

Susan

Hi Susan

Sorry to hear about your brain mets and the issue you have regarding your driving licence. I think the reason you haven’t had any replies is there aren’t many ladies on the forum currently with brain mets (as far as I have observed) so there’s not many ladies able to offer an answer. As Anna has suggested someone may answer via the private area of the forum but I would think you might get a Private Message if anyone has read your post and is able to offer advice. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help but just wanted you to know your post hasn’t been ignored I just don’t think there’s many of us able to answer your question. Good luck with your ongoing treatment.

ps just to add to my reply I don’t know if you are receiving PIP, which I’m sure in your circumstances you would be entitled to, as it would help with financial matters such as having to use taxis etc if you are unable to drive.
