Re: Advice on Taxotere

Hi all,

Just wanted to say all the best Pauline for this afternoon, just think how good you'll feel when you're back at home and the first one's done. I had to have the injections as well, I did them myself and like anything you just get used to it, I had them for all 3 cycles of Tax and I managed fine, I didn't feel they made anything worse so fingers crossed for you.

Take care

hi pauline, its ur first tax today isnt it ? just wanted to say good luck to u. IF your talkin about the white cell boostin injections I have those also, theyre given from the day after chemo, once a day for five days,my hubby gives me mine. They multiply the aches and pains ten fold in my case.I take ibuprofen for that tho (only after steroids out of system).
Hope everyone is doing well, keep smiling sharon xxxxxxxxxxxx

Re: Advice on Taxotere

just a quick one as i have just typed an essay on other thread. Got go ahead for tomorrow for Tax. will let you know how it goes as soon as i can.
Sally and julie, hang on in there, your nearly a week down the line.
Julie how many times do you have injection for, onc said something about days 5 to 10, that will take me to day we go away. do you do it or does a nurse? She told me it will make the aches and pains worse, but will be worth it as without them i would probably get delayed.
Off to bed soon, not expecting much sleep after 8 steroids today. good job i have a good book.
catch up with you all soon luv pauline xxx

Re: Advice on Taxotere

Hi Sally,

İ hope you will feel better soon, i was prescribed advil and
panadol extra for pain , and panadol extra helped me quite a lot.
Than i do eat 3 times read meat , 2 times chicken or liver, 2 times fresh fish weekly with lots of veggies, to help bone marrow-white cells, lots of fruits such as red grapes ,peaches, water melon and my beta glucans and red grapes seed extract and harnup molasses.. when i feel very tired i take 500 mg of vitamin c.. All above with approval of my oncologist.. and of course
2 liters daily spring water + mugs of green tea

Friendly wishes from ıstanbul

PS : i am on my way to get my blood tests and see my onco before my 4th TAC cocktail on friday :))

Re: Advice on Taxotere

Hi all,

Having gone through the Tax I know what you are feeling. I found that I could eat sweet things, trifles, creme caramel and rice pudding. The only savoury things I could eat without retching were scrambled eggs and mushrooms. Anything with starch tasted awful such as, cakes biscuits, crackers and bread. I could not drink coffee or tea but found that ginger ale was good, strangely enough horlicks tasted brilliant and that's what I drank most of.

Watch out for the mouth ulcers. I sucked iced lollies when having the Tax to keep my mouth cold. Then I rinsed my mouth with pure pineapple juice, spat it out and then drank some. I did that for 4 days after the Tax. There is an enzyme in pineapple which helps to prevent ulcers and I only had one through 6 Tax.

Don't take the steroids after 2 pm. I had my first lot with an early breakfast and my second with a late lunch. Did not have any trouble sleeping. The tiredness was awful at first but, after a chat with my Oncologist I had a half dose of steroids for 3 days after the normal dose. That worked well. Just watch out for the day or two you may feel depressed. With me it was on the second day after I finished the steroids. My taste came back slowly after about ten days on each cycle. By this time I was starving so ate all my favourite foods to fill up.

The best thing I found to take for constipation was dulco ease capsules. They just add more fluid to the stools to make them softer. The Diarrhoea comes after about 4 days and I was given tablets for that.

It's just a question of juggling with your life for a few months and finding what is best for you. I got through it and so will you, so keep your chins up.

Sally, you moan away, your allowed. too much to expect we would get off scott free i suppose. Hope your not suffering too much. tuck yourself up in bed and look after yourself, hopefully it wont be too long before your back on the up.((((hugs))))
Julie, sounds like your doing ok at the min, fingers crossed you will be ok. You had your share of rough times on the fec at the beginning, hopefully you will sail through the rest of your chemo. (hope the fish survived)
Been for my blood test this morning, fingers crossed bloods are ok for TAX on thursday, should know tomorrow morning. Got to ring for results before i start taking DOUBLE steroids in preperation for thursday. can't wait for the sleepless night tomorrow, might not bother going to bed, was bad enough on single dose.
Look after yourselves everyone, luv Pauline xxx

Re: Advice on Taxotere

Morning Sally.
U go back to bed and sleep this nasty time off!! I am sure that give it a few days you will be fine again.
I have had achy pressure on my chest too, but not anything I found too worrying.
I think the worst feeling with any type of chemo if the feeling of your body being taken over as if going into decay!!
But as we all pretty much know by now, there are good days ... and enjoy those. The bad days, well will just have to try and get through them as well as we can.

Also, I thought would mention. Many of my friends are so keen to help us and I have found it hard to think of anything for them to do.
But now I have started suggesting that they cook us a meal that we can have in the freezer for the days when energy levels are down.
Any now, I have a freezer full of yummy food from all my friends (ie. lasagen, cottage pie, casserole, meatballs etc).
The fun part is also letting them know how the food was once consumed...mostly a lot better than if I'd cooked it myself!!

Hair loss clinic today, may be fun, but also emotional. Though own hair still firmly in place!!

Re: Advice on Taxotere

Hi all you brave, strong, fabulous girls! Just wanted to say hi,this is my 1st time in a chat room and reading all your posts has been amazing and is really helping me. I was diagnosed with BC 20th May, had masectomy and expander fitted and full axillary clearance and they found a 6cm tumor and 3 out of 10 nodes had cancer. Got what is quite a rare BC by all accounts 'micro papillary' usually found in older women (I'm 39). Does anyone else have this? Having 2nd FEC this week (3xFEC and 3xTAXOTERE) and hair started coming out in clumps last wed so cut it all off Friday night and it was the best thing I could have done! Bit drastic but feel like I'm in control again! Thank you all for staying so positive. Us girls are sooo strong! Xxxx

Re: Advice on Taxotere

hi Sally

Aches got less during the cycle and improved if I kept mobile.Took my B6 as a vitamin B complex (readily available in most supermarkets)

Julie I only had one injection per cycle for increasing white cell count but I know there's 2 different types. My main problem was bone pain in the areas that produce more white cells (jaw, hips, sternum and the long bones of the leg) Lasted for two or three days max and was advised to use ibuprofen after I'd checked my temperature, which solved the problem. Definitely worth the side effects cos I felt so much better 2nd cycle when I had it than 1st when I didn't.

To everyone else thinking of you.

Re: Advice on Taxotere

Hi Sunflower

I had the ice mittens and ice slippers whilst having Taxotere.

I think they are supposed to help to reduce nail loss, nail bed soreness and peripheral neuopathy.

If so, I have to report that my fingernails fell out anyway (but this isn't nearly as distressing as it might sound,as there was always a new one that had grown halfway up underneath) and the beds also became very sore. My toe and thumbnails were unscathed.

I had very little peripheral neuropathy, so I think the ice mitts and slippers may have helped here....

Good luck to you all!

Re: Advice on Taxotere

Hi all
well on day 3 now and its so far not too bad , got the yucky mouth and taste buds but thats normal, legs feel a little achey but nothing that needs painlillers, have been out shopping today and done washing etc. been looking for B6 but as yet cant find any well not in suermarkets but might see if i can get some from Drs as we have free perscriptions here in wales, it'l save a few quid.

I had cold gloves on while having treatment and wondered if anyone else had them as well if they worked/helped with hands.

I feel abit tired but think thats from the sleeping pills i take while on steriods as they keep me awake but down to 2 today and then 1 tomorrow , being weaned of them to see it will help with combat the crash effect from them.

Glad your doing ok julie m, can i have some of your sun though please.

Oh and just in cse you really want to know ive been to loo today so may not be getting the constipation either. defo better on sicky front though.

Take care all

I wonder if the B6 would help my long term peripheral neuropathy-its not really disabling but is a constant reminder.I wish my eyebrows would grow.I finished tax in May 2007 and expected to be back to normalish by now.[Was told it could be 3 years though].

Hi Girls, hi Pauline

Sally and Julie , i wish you relax time with minimal SE
with all my heart..

Well i call this group " My Tax Sisterhood " as we started all together this journey allmost at the same time and believe me i hope we can reunite next summer and have a laugh all together,
my house and my friends house will be allways open to you all..

Hugs and prayers from Istanbul
Seda

PS : first days i allways have severe constipation problems, despite my 2 liters daily water and mostly veggie based food, therefore magnesie calcinee and/or dupholac helps a lot.
But for people with diabetes or similar problems duphalac being glucose based, is not suggested, even thoughits so mild that its a pediatric laxative as well..

Re: Advice on Taxotere

Hi, I had my last taxotere last week and the best things I discovered were:

Take 50mg Vit B6 three times a day for the numb/red hands and feet

Use children's toothpaste - I tried the biotene but found that my teeth didn't feel clean. Children's toothpaste doess't sting your mouth and tastes much nicer!

Hope this helps...

Re: Advice on Taxotere

Hi
I have just had my second Tax today and must admit that I was really scared before my first one and still just a little bit scared today
But I found the SE different to FEC in so much as I did not have such a bad reaction to the injections and had no feeling of sickness
however I had a bit of a cough and sore nose which my Gp helped with he has given me alupent syrup to open up my airways and a cream for my nose and cough has got better but voice seems husky at times, tiredness has been more but not in so much as had to go for naps but just not functioning 100% and have not worked as yet on TAX as not felt up to it where as I did on FEC for weeks 2 & 3
Aches and pains were not as bad as I feared that they would be mostly they were in area where I am prone to them due to previous whiplash injury
I am trying dark nail varnish to try and stop any problems with my nails

wiil keep you all posted on how I go this time

Just a quickie....re the hair loss.

I had read a thread on here re: permenant hair loss following TAX. I ran this passed my BCN and Onc. Neither they, nor any of their associates have ever known a patient whose hair hasn't re-grown. I'm not saying it doesn't happen but please don't let a few cases plague you.... You all have enough to cope with right now.

My hair has grown back twice as thick and in ringlets, and the cold cap worked for me too - I'm not the only one... read some of the positive blogs

Look forward to a new hairdo!!!

The first time when i arrived to the Chemo center, i was terrified inside but when the infusion start to go thru my veins i said to myself : what is in this bottle will be as much as good and beneficiary for me as if it was vitamin c, and e if i would take so much vitamin c it will give me some SE...
and next 14th of august i am doing my 4th round, the worst side effect i got was the fall of my hair :)))
