Re: After chemo

Thanks to all who replied. I was given a long list of banned foods which is strange compared to others. As I ended up in hospital after last chemo at two weeks with a sore throat which they took very seriously I am still feeling a little nervous. Have started having things like soft cheese and salad that I haven't prepared. It is so nice to be able to eat out again.

Re: After chemo

It depends how well your white blood cells are picking up after treatment. If no problems each cycle and they are doing well, then within 3 or 4 weeks you should be able to eat whatever you want! If you are unsure check with your BCN.

Re: After chemo

Hi Maryland, Ah ok, so far I have only caught one infection, laryngitis not food related. But yes like you, everything tastes awful, so just soup for me ! X

Re: After chemo

Hi Sara68....from memory I wasn't given advice about 'banned foods' just certain types of food to avoid to give myself the best possible chance of not picking up a foodborne illness/infection when immune system was low. Think the list was similar to a pregnancy type diet e.g. washing fruit/vegetables, no unpasteurised food, raw shellfish, soft and blue cheese, pate, raw or undercooked meat or eggs, only eating takeaways from places you trust.....all basic food hygiene really. Since everything tasted like cardboard I only ate slushy food I could swallow quickly for the final 3 chemos anyway!!! Hope that helps to reassure? All the best for your final chemo.....take care x

Re: After chemo

Hi sheba56.... I asked the very same question 2 years ago, as my daughter got married 4 weeks after my final chemo and I wanted to enjoy the whole occasion! The answer my Onc gave was (only remember as I wrote it in my diary!!).

"How long chemo drugs stay in the body after the final treatment varies from person to person (just like everything else about chemo lol). Generally chemo drugs (I had FEC-T) are present in the body for a few hours to several days, so quite a short time. However, the effect of the drugs on your body can last a long time" (cheers!!!!!). She was lovely really.

With regard to raised temperature I would assume that you should still be vigilant for the 3 weeks post last chemo.....however safest to contact someone if you are concerned.

Hope that helps.....now go out and treat yourself to everything you fancy to eat and enjoy 🙂

Take care x

After chemo

Hi

does anyone have any idea about how long after you finish chemo you can start eating all the banned food like salad, soft cheese, take aways. Also how long do you need to be contacting the chemo suite etc if you think you might have a temperature/infection.

I finished my last chemo four weeks ago tomorrow.
