Anyone due to start chemo in April? - Awesom April Angels

Hi everyone

Just returned home from the Mx results appt, and I'm actually in shock I think. The good news is that yes they got it all, complete excision and margins etc.

the shocker is the size of it. My first WLE removed 49mm of Grade 3 tumour, my re-excision removed another 20mm grade 3, and the Mx has revealed a further 90mm grade 2. Total is 160mm!! I've not heard of any one else having one this size, and it's really really scared me as to my prognosis now ( have access to adjuvant online and predict at work). My OH is wondering why I'm not dancing round the house rejoicing in the facts that it was a lower grade and its all gone. I really can't tell him that I fear my life has now been cut drastically shorter. Sorry to rant I just needed to air it somehow xxxxx

So far so good, slight nausea and tiredness yesterday evening but went to bed around 9 and slept through. Feeling fine today, been out and about, nurse comming around 5 to give me my Neulasta injection.
Debra & Lori - hope all is well woth you too, Lori are there any side effects with Neulasta?

Wendy, pleased to hear about the portacath. Having mine done next Friday, but I'm a bit of a wimp with needles, so glad to know its not bad.
Anyone who has started chemo - my first one is on 15th April, which also happens to be the date for the "Look Good Feel Better" session my BC nurse put me on. It starts at 2pm - do you think I will be okay after first chemo? I really don't want to miss my make-up and skincare session.

Haven't been on here for a while because I had a wonderful weekend in the south LaKe District and tried very hard not to think about cancer. Hope you all had a good weekend too. Back to reality yesterday when I went for Portacath fitting - not as horrendous as feared but sore today.

Hi girls. Just popping in from the February Valentines with a tip for anyone planning to use the cold cap and who wears glasses. If you have contact lenses as well just pop them in on the morning of your chemo. I found the cap was so tight I couldn't get my glasses on to read, write, use my phone or ipad. Hope this helps!

hope you are feeling ok this morning Amber and no SEs have kicked on.
well today is results day from my Mx. Not sure what to expect, but hopefully will give me some sort of idea as to where we go from here.
also hopefully my seroma will be drained again as I have now lost about 70% movement in my arm, am hunched up and in a mega amount of pain. The sloshy water bed has gone and its really quite firm now. Not a happy bunny day 😞

Glad your both over today and back in the comfort of your homes!
I hope the side effects are easier to bear this time round.
I have been out of action since Sat evening with the previous SE's joined with terrible aches and pains through out my whole body. The aches started to disperse last night but nausea etc remained so have had my anti sickness pills changed I was also prescribed peptac (?) A suspension like gaviscon, think this has helped as today I am begining to feel like me again and not some-one possessed!!!
Good luck girls, my heart goes out to you, sometimes knowing what is ahead is scary but hopefully it will help in your preparation to get through.....one day at a time.
...the first day that you feel better than the day before holds a great feeling!!

FEC - T Cylce 1 Day 1
Well, that's number one off the list, ok so far no side effects other than a sore head which I had anyway. Nurse was lovely, explained everything to me and no problems with cannula. Seems I've got loads of meds, got Emend and had to take one before she started, also given Dexamethasone (steroid), Ondansetron, Domoeridone and Levomepromazine. Had my first red wee!

Hope you are all ok, will hopefully have nothing major to report tomorrow if you know what I mean.

Just been back this afternoon had cardiac scan and told that all is well (yayyyy good result for a change). Can't believe i actually feel a little twinge of nervous happyness. This time 4 weeks ago I was teaching people to ride and running my stables and farm without a care in the world. Now im happy that Herceptin wont kill me (every cloud eh!).
Oh Debra really sorry it has returned. Can it return after MX. Im glad your finding counseling helpful and tonight am going to put a log on that fire to make all us AAAs feel warm and cosy.

Dear Sandy, yes I understand fear, The breast cancer returned after 11 years in the same breast. I am currently on chemotheraphy no 2 and have just returned home.
I am having counseling and after 2 sessions I am already finding it of great benefit. I am also writing how I feel and I when I read it from the begining of this 2nd nightmare I can see some progress.
I found the 2nd chemotherapy easier I think because I knew what to expect. I am using the cold cap and this time Mum and I took a single duvet and a flask of hot drinks, I also saw a few familiar faces.
I am home now thinking about you all and wish we could all be together around a log fire finding solace together.

I thought you may find our factsheet on Herceptin useful. You can download a copy from the website or order a paper copy. If you browse the list of publications for breast cancer treatments it is called Trastuzumab (Herceptin).

Just got back from oncologist. Have been told Her+ too whatever that is. All I know is that it's bad as the drugs to combat this type can affect the heart muscle (but it is rare). Three more tests to go. So far the tunnel is getting longer. Have now convinced myself all other tests are not going to end well. Has anyone else had ER+ Her+ and the other one +. New to all this gargon.
Hugs to you Spudgirl I pray they blitz us both with the right drugs that work and kick this thing straight to hell.

argh !! just typed a message and lost it! Sandy, good luck with all the tests this week. I do hope you start feeling better soon, its no fun being in the petrified stage.
i was supposed to have op first but they changed tack and decided to do chemo first. i only found out last Thursday so not got appointment yet for haircut. Mind you, at least i'll get the dentist appointment out of the way now - i hate going!

Hi all and Spudgirl,
I too am having chemo before surgery and have already had some sort of marker/coil put in. Lump is at stage 2 and is over 4cm and I have lymph node involvement. First time for me. I am absolutly petrified of the whole thing. In for cardiac scan tommorrow. Wed in for bone & Body scan, Sat middle organ scan. So many things and having to wait for the results is harsh, I should know tommorrow when I start chemo (next week i think).
I was told by my oncologist that cancer can still return even after Mx and that chemo would shrink the lump so that reconstruction would be an easier method nowadays. I have no idea if this is the right way round but its the only option they have given me.

i'm seeing oncologist tomorrow afternoon to sort out when chemo starts. Ridiculously i started with awful toothache on Saturday and dentist isn't open until tomorrow. i suppose its better i get it now rather than during chemo but i am so hacked off. hope it isnt a big job as i don't want it to affect when chemo starts, as i am having chemo before my op.

Hope you alll had a lovely easter, had a great time in Amsterdam wish we could have stayed longer, a nice break away from reality.
Back to reality, had my bloods taken today in preparation for chemo tomorrow morning. The nurse wanted to take blood from my affected arm but I refused. Anyway long story short my chemo kit is ready added another item, bought myself a onsie to slouch about in if I have rough days.

I have been reading all your posts but haven't replied until today as I felt so awful but on the mend at last (although I hurt my back picking up my daughter for the 1st time yesterday so have ended up back in bed today - - is there no rest for the wicked )

Just got back from a lovely break in Cornwall. Dentist and haircut next week, I googled pixie hairstyles and found the look I want. I hope I keep my hair for a few weeks! Got the 'chemo chat' on 8th and first treatment on 10th. Worried about them finding a vein as it's always a struggle. But we will get through this!

I am so frightened about tomorrow which is chemotherapy no 2, I am having the cold cap and my hair is shredding when I gently pull it, I know I should not do that.
I feel so low today I have stayed in bed, I feel safe here. Any one else feel like me?

Hi Ladies

I've had a busy 'cancer free' few days which has been a great distraction - just catching up with friends and family and not thinking about treatment etc too much at all 🙂

Back to reality now with heart scan on Wednesday, pre chemo assessment also on weds (at different hospital, very co-ordinated!!) then chemo starts on the 5th. I'm slightly concerned that there will be a delay as they won't be able to get a vein for blood on weds and will have to get another appointment to get a line fitted. For my 2 ops the aneasthetist couldn't give me a GA (as no veins) without putting me under with gas first 😞 just a bit annoyed that I have been calling this out all along but they are going to 'try' first on Wednesday then take it from there. We'll see what happens...

Lori - thanks for sharing how you have been feeling each day, doesn't sound like plain sailing but equally doesn't sound as bad as some, hope it get's a little better

Amber - good luck for Tuesday, will be thinking of you. Think it may have been you Amber who mentioned in an earlier post about a cash payment from private Ins even if you go with NHS. I contacted them and got £150 as I had to spend 1 night in hospital - thanks for the tip 🙂 - used the money to pay for my scarves and hats...

It looks like I might be joining you in April! I need to go back and read all this thread to catch up, but my mind is a bit all over the place today.

I had a DCIS 3 years ago (lumpectomy, rads. Tamoxifen), and now have a new lump in the other breast. This one is triple negative grade 3. Had various scans tests, MRI etc and yesterday thought I was finally going to get my operation date. Went to see my surgeon and she said they have changed their minds and they will do chemo before the do the op.

It was something to do with triple neg not always responding to chemo, so if they chemo it after they take it out they won't know if chemo working or not. However she did say that these aggressive ones usually respond really well to chemo and it might shrink to nothing.

So today I had some dye injected to mark where it is in case it shrinks to nothing, as they will still operate afterwards.

Is anyone else having chemo first?

The other week my Onc said that if it had gone into the lymph nodes then I would need a stronger chemo, but now they aren't operating first, then how will they know what strength chemo I need?

I am seeing him again on Tuesday, presumably to schedule the chemo, but wondered if anyone else was doing it this way round and what you were told.

Also, I was told I'll need a portacath inserting and when I asked the breast care nurse about it she said it will be done under local. Anyone else had that?

The good thing is my breast care nurse has booked me on what I think is the Belgian equivalent of the "Look Good, Feel Better" skincare and makeup sessions on 15th April, so looking forward to that 🙂

Lori - I'm glad to hear your 1st Chemo cycle is going ok.
Kim - My BC nurse said I should expect to start losing my hair within a few weeks of the first cycle. I have bought a hat and bandana,but no wig yet.Guess I should get that one sorted out.

Glad you had some relief from the drain away, I have not experienced a seroma but does not sound pleasant so glad it has difference having it drained, take care.
Welcome to the new members too - it does help to follow others progress we share the same concers...one biggy being the hair loss as one of the side effects. With regards getting sorted for a wig, whenever you feel ready. When you will need it though will depend when you start your first cycle many people are advised they start to lose your hair before starting second cycle.
Hope everyone doing ok, My day 3 is going ok after 1st cycle....long may it continue!!

just a quick update my water bed did indeed turn out to be a seroma!
Had 70mls drained yesterday morning-didn't feel a thing, but by last night it was sloshing and slurping away again. got a feeling ill be back there again tomorrow for another draining. Didn't know I was actually in so much discomfort until the liquid had gone then it was ooooo lovely to be able to move again.

I would really like to join this group as I think I will be starting chemo sometime in April. I was diagnosed with Invasive Ductile Cancer with intermediate DCIS on 28th February. I had WLE and SLNB on 12th March, the dressing were removed yesterday and I also got my results which is stage 3 ER+8 PR0. I will need 6x chemotherapy followed by 15x radiation and 5 years of hormone treatment, luckily there was no spread into the lymph nodes. I meet with the Oncology Team on 4th April and my BCN thinks I will start my chemo the following week.
I feel like I'm on a rollercoaster as everything has happened so quickly....in some ways that is good as I've just had to get on with it, but it is hard seeing the shock and worry on the faces of family and friends. The most immediate problem I have is concerning hair loss...Does anyone know how soon this starts as I've got a family wedding on 31st May and I need to know if I need to get my act together and get a wig sorted out. This leads me on to all sorts of questions re: wigs which I think I will speak to my BCN next week.
I've looked at quite a few posts on here and I think the support is fantastic.

Sorry to hear about the seroma's girls I hope these are not a huge problem for you or delay your treatment too much...not that the treatment is all that but I'm sure we all want to get it over with.

Day 2 on the Chemo Coaster is not too bad at the moment although the headache I developed y'day about 2pm did not let up until lunchtime today. The paracetamol done next to nothing for the headache so back on the tramadol!! I also had nausea and alot of reflux.....Unfortunately I had absolutely no sleep last night so although I have some respite from the side effects I'm feeling very tired. I guess the anti sickness and steroid tablets are not working too badly for me going by other posts I am not suffering as much as some folks.

I had my 24hr post Chemo injection done at home that was painless. Hope I can continue through without any more effects but we will see what happens!!!

Just popping in from valentines thread just to mention most of us valentines have suffered with a toxic / burning stomach or acid reflux / indigestion , the best thing we've been given for this is Omoprazole which u can get from your gp , i started taking it halfway through Fec 1 & it's a godsend , I first thought it was just one of those SE's that u had to tolerate but it's not , can't recommend Omoprazole enough I take it every day now , you can always check with your onc first that its ok !

My appointment with the Oncologist has come through for Tuesday next week. Whilst I am glad to be moving forward with things I am very nervous about everything. I'm having my hair cut into a Pixie crop today, which I'm kind of looking forward to. I've not had a short haircut since I was 14. At least I get to try something new out before I lose my hair I really don't like the cold much so the cold cap sounds like torture to me, wimp that I am .

I will be starting my chemo TAC on 5th April
Bit worried but at the same time keen to get started
I was diagnosed in Jan with dci with some micro invasive cells the dr described it as tiny clusters of cells
I have had a skin saving masectomy with expander implant. Then node removal afterwards 5/29
I am keeping positive and have lots of family and freinds support but thought it would be nice to have contact with others who are going through the same thing
I am waiting to hear back from the BC nurse about trying the cold cap with TAC otherwise its hats and maybe a wig as I won't be a pretty sight without hair, mind you if the weather stays this cold then it will be woolly hats or maybe a balaclava!

Thanks for your first chemo account, Lori - glad it wasn't too awful and may your side effects be minimal.
Went for MUGA heart scan today - something else ticked off the list. Also ordered some stuff fom Annabandana which means, I suppose, I'm no longer in denial about chemo. Having portacath fitted on Tuesday -absolutely terrified cos it's only a local anaesthetic and I am a panicky wimp! Anyone else had this yet? Would love to hear reassuring experiences!
Off to the lovely (cold!) Lake District for 4 days, during which I'm going to try my damnedest to pretend life is normal.

Sandy, WLE is Wide Local Excision (basically a lumpectomy), I don't know what my chemo will be yet, seeing surgeon to check up on op results next Friday then onc after that

Thank you Zuzy and all of you in Awesome Aprils. I hope you don't mind my joining you and I know I'm at the begining of what is looking to be a long journey. (Start Chemo in two weeks), have two scans first to make sure it has not gone any further next wed & sat will let you no how I get on. What does WLE mean? Also my oncologist explained everything about what type of chemo I was going to be on and for how long and that I needed a course of injections in my tummy before I start. Does this happen before evey cycle? I was completly mute and everything went in one ear and straight out the other with absolutley nothing registering apart from it's a serious desease but you can get through it. (This is the only part I can remember getting up and giving her a hug). Luckily I took my best friend who spelt everything out after we got out. Is there really a chemo fog? Ive got it already and I havn't even started yet.

since Jan. on Tamox/zoladex which apparently not shrinking the tumor.
1. has anyone done Chemosensitivity Assay / test ?
2. is there any labs or med. establishments which offer RAD51 and or A207 gene tests?
any help appreciated.

Thanks Lola and amber for your welcome. I'm planning a haircut next week - pixie style - easier to look after while still there. Bought a 'handy band' from sea salt (and matching top!) to wear on my head if/when needed. Someone who had chemo suggested taking along a laptop to look at photos of happy times and beautiful places to make the time pass. Planning to do that with my partner. Yes I want to get started too to get it over.

Day 1 on The Chemo Coaster!!

Hi everyone had my first session this morning it lasted 9-11am.
I had a terrific nurse and my OH came with me and is a huge support to me!

Started off with Epirubicin (pink fluid) - the only effect was that it felt quite cold going in, nurse gave me a little heat pad for my arm which felt lovely.
The second infusion was Cyclophosphadine (clear fluid) - the effects with this one were a little strange, a tigly/prickly feeling 'down below' in nether region and also on my head, this only lasted a few minutes....we had a giggle as I was squirming in my seat!!
The third infusion was Flourouracil (clear fluid, 5FU) - the effect with this one was a strange fuzzy feeling in my head and nose, bit like synusitus or feeling you get when a head cold is starting. I had a little break part way through on this infusion just for the effects to ease a little.

I'm not really sure what I expected from my first cycle but I felt OK.
I'm a few hours into a fuzzy headache but not feeling nauseous so that is a bonus.
I will keep you posted with how I'm feeling if it helps others to have an idea of what to expect.

Debra - sorry to hear about your hair thining so soon. Keep up with the cap, I read about s girl who had hair thinning with the cap but she did not lose it all, I will try and remember what book it was in and let you know. I wish you good luck and a successful result with the cap. Try not to pull at it and wash it and brush less frequently than you normally would.

Linda - thanks for the link to the protocol info this will be interesting reading over next day or so....feeling just a little too tired to sit in front of PC this afternoon.

Pauline & All - just to say I had another annabandana and bohemia headwear order arrived today and is great I can reccomend the 3 seams padded front bandana from bohemia and little scarves with detachable flower from annabandana....had them on for a preview straight away.

Hi PrimroseHill, welcome to the AAAs, there are quite a few people on this and other forums having chemo first so you are not alone! I had hormone therapy before surgery (they didn't think i'd need chemo) it worked in that it shrunk enough so they got clear margins in my WLE but it was in lymph nodes so Chemo it is 😞

I'm mum of two (15 & 17yrs) married with a lovely husband and 46. I was sat devestated in front of the Dr last Tuesday who told me I have stage 2 BC in the right breast with lymph gland involvement. They tell me the lump is 4.5cm and on monday I had a marker or coil put into the middle of it so that they can monitor how it shrinks after chemo. Only then will it be removed and then I can have reconstructive surgery. Has anyone had things done this way round. I have mostly heard of massectomy then chemo. I start chemo in two weeks. Lv to you all. xxx

I think my hair is shredding, last night my scalp was sore and if I pulled on some hair it came out? I feel anxious about thiis. I am on my first chemo towards the end of the cycle next one on the 2nd of April. I intend to use the cold cap again. Feel low today.
