Pauline, I wondered the same thing about 'Look good feel good'. I looked on the website but couldn't see how to register or ask for an invite, perhaps that comes later via the hospital?
I'm not keen on a wig either, but I was thinking of getting a few hats. AnnaBandana and Suburban Turban and Ebay have been mentioned on other threads and I'm sure there are other sites out there.

Hello Linda, glad to hear that your heart scan was clear, and that you are now good to go. Let us know how things go with the portacath won't you? I'm having Herceptin too, its a bit mind-blowing the idea of having it for a year.
I've been following the Valentines thread on and off as well and even though none of us want to be here, its great to be in a position to support each other.

Zuzy, hope things are going okay for you today and that you get home this evening.
Hello to everyone else, I was reading through posts earlier this morning but when I tried to reply I couldn't log in, and now I've lost the plot a bit.
I bowled up to the hospital today for what I thought would be a mere formality of meeting with the consultant and referral to the oncologist, but I should have known something was afoot when they left me for ages to get undressed before checking my wound. I expect they were fighting over who got to tell me the bad news! Its all healing brilliantly and the surgeon did a fab job, particularly considering my nipple has been moved twice now....but they still haven't got clear margins so now I have to decide whether to go for it again or go straight to mx.
So a bit more delay for me....I hope this doesn't mean getting bumped from the 'Angels'!

Angie - I haven't had that direct advice however, having read lots of posts from previous threads my plan is to shave my hair off at the first sign of loss. I think that will be around 5-10 days after 1st chemo session. Think it might start with a sore scalp so will have the razor ready at that point!!

Can anyone suggest some good websites for head gear? There are loads out there and not sure which ones are the best. I intend having a good look over the next couple days and getting some orders in so I will let you all know if I find any good ones. I wasn't planning to get a wig to be honest as think I will be happy with scarves/ hats etc (there are some gorgeous combinations)however, my Onc says I will get a prescription for one so I might as well get one 🙂

Also have any of you looked into the 'look good feel good' classes? Apparently really good and help with makeup etc for when you are a baldy! I'm just wondering when the best time to go is i.e. before or during hair loss?

Your nurse is very wise.

I took control of my own hair last week. I went to the hairdresser and had a short back and sides - it's about an inch on the top, shorter on the sides and back. I took my beenie hat along to wear when I left! It was a big shock - not the shortness, but the grey. I am 100% grey but have never seen myself grey as I always have it coloured. I am now well and truly over the shock and have grown to almost like it! Certainly great to get out of bed in a morning and go! Not even a comb is needed! I also bought some clippers as we didn't have any, and am now resdy to shave the lot off as soon as the fall out begins. I have a wig and some hats. I have worn the wig several times in public to get used to it - I am wearing it in my avatar pic. I feel in control, and am much less likely to be traumatised when the time comes. I can think of nothing worse than going from a full head of hair to none at all all at once.

As for eyebrows, you can get real hair false ones now that are self adhesive, and aren't expensive. I haven't seen them for real though so can't comment on how they look.

I am also happy with the NHS. They don't waste any time with cancer cases, and the breast cancer protocols seem excellent - there is a lot of money thrown at it. Sometimes the communication between departments is a bit lacking, especially if more than one hospital is involved, but all it needs is keeping an eye on, and I would do that anyway.

It has been mentioned about shaving my head earlier rather than later but to be honest I have aleady had two haircuts in prep for this chemo so until I at least get my wig I am going to hang fire....Wig shopping planned for Saturday!
I will be on Fec-T initially which is due to start next Wed, my oncologist has advised that I should start to lose my hair 10-14 days after 1st treatment.
Fortunately, I have a really great hairdresser who has said when the time comes she will pop round to my house with her clippers and if I have my wig at the same time she will make any modifications required to that.
The best advise i have is 'Don't go there till you get there' we all have so many things to consider, process and deall with and I find the 'one step at a time' approach works best for me.

when i spoke to my bcn yesterday she advised me to take control of the chemo and shave my head instead of letting my hair fall out, she did say that my cocktail is certain to make me lose my hair and that it will grow back more even than if it falls out as well.
has anyone else had similar advice, ive already sent for a wig to try out because i want to get back to work.

Hi all,
Glad we all seem to be hearing about treatment started (only glad, because sooner it starts hopefully- the sooner it will end!)
I have seen the oncologist now, but still await a start date! Finally I found out that I am ER+, didn't say about HER or PR, so have no clue- do know I have to have chemo- the FEC cocktail x6 followed by 5 years of tamoxifen!
My hospital fits either a PICC or Hickman line as standard and as I have a young daughter I am going for the Hickman line- at the moment they are saying that will be put in on the 4th April, but they may have to bring it forward if my chemo start date is earlier!
Didn't have any scans or haven't been told I need anything pre chemo except bloods and an ECG, am a bit apprehensive about never having had any scans as I have really achy bones I have never had before! But I am sure they know what they are doing- I didnt have any affected nodes- so hopefully the cancer has not escaped anywhere.
I am taking my daughter awayovernight to give us a little fun before the dreaded chemo starts this evening!
I hope everyone is feeling as ok as they can and is making the best (possible) of the time beoifre starting the chemo, that's the only thing keeping me sane!

So sorry to hear about your dad, I am sure you will be a great support for each other.
Good luck today with onco apt. I like you have opted to have my treatment NHS although I do have private ins.
My experience so far has been very positive and have been given timely apointments so I am very happy to continue with NHS. Be aware that there may be a cash claim to be made from your private medical ins company even though you are receiving treatment on NHS - it is worth looking into especially if you are on no or reduced pay while off work.
I was scheduled for additional scans by my oncogist for CT, Heart and Bone. I am due to start my Chemo on 27th March after all (I thought this may have been delayed until April as I still have a little healing to do from mastectomy). Sure they know whats best!
I hope to still keep up with this page even alghough I have a head start of 1st Chemo next Wednesday......yikes!!

Angie- your way further north than me, Iam guessing you'll be going to Raigmore. We're under Grampian so Iam Aberdeen, but Iam getting my chemo at home, it's a minimum 3hr round trip on a good day. I have bought my wig too, it's my bit of security as losing my hair is a biggy for me but I feel Iam taking a bit of control now. This site is great, anything you want to know somebody will have an answer and we're all going through this together so are here for each other.

TCH (Taxotere/Carboplatin/Herceptin) starting 8th April. East Lancs area.

I have been a member of the February Valentines since January, but needed a second operation so chemo was delayed. I am now starting in April, so may I please join you in addition to the Valentines? Grade 3 IDC with high grade DCIS, 15mm, clear nodes, lumpectomy, SNB, then a cavity shave to get a bigger margin on one side. Hormone negative. HER2-positive.

I had my ECHO heart scan today (some have ECHO scans and some have MUGA scans, both give similar data about your heart function although the procedure is very different). No problems, my heart is healthy.

Because I am on Herceptin for 12 months my onc has arranged for me to have a portacath fitted. He says this is automatic at my hospital for Herceptin people. The "chemo only" patients have PICC lines. Mine is being fitted on 3rd April. Then all systems go for the Herceptin on 8th April and Taxotere/Carboplatin chemo on 9th April.

I am a person who needs to be in control of things, so have done vast amounts of research on my own personal diagnosis and treatment. Being on the Valentines thread I have gained a lot of information, tips and advice from their experiences and feel as prepared as it's possible to be to face this journey. However, I will probably crumble into a wobbling mass of jelly when the time actually arrives!

iam cracking up or there are gremlins on here, could have sworn I posted this already but it's disappeared.
Pauline / Wendy - I had my heart scan on Monday (Muga) pretty straight forward. 2 injections 30mins apart 2nd with radio active fluid then scan which lasts 15mins.
Pauline- yes Iam on the FEC-T train as well, have read all the worst side effects into if they don't happen it will be a bonus but I think Iam mentally prepared.

Just thinking of the usual scans people get who have more than 3/4 lymph nodes positive - think these are bone, Mri/ct - not sure what Muga is? Did your scans shjow anything? and are they guaranteed to show any secondary cancer if it is there?
I'm probably more interested to see if there are more options for Triple neg via private - I've heard there might be

Think I'll give them a call and see what they say, I did phone when first diagnosed and they said I was fully covered and could go private at any stage. Then NHS has been very quick so far so not felt the need but now in this lull betewwen post op and getting chemo date so think I might as well give them a bell. Chemo at home sounds interesting!!

Glad you had a good weekend and had the chance to spend time with your Dad.
We have insurance and Iam receiving my treatment privately through Bupa, what sort of scans are you thinking of?
I had 3/22 nodes positive and have had a bone scan and Muga scan so far. The big advantage for me seems to be the timescales compared to Nhs in my area, things have moved quicker and the fact I can get my chemo at home. It would otherwise be a minimum 3hr round trip for me to have it in hospital.

Hi AAAs - first day back online after a fab weekend away with my family. My dad was diagnosed with cancer in his mouth / glands 2 days before i was diagnosed - would you believe it!!! Anyway we got him away for the weekend, it was so nice to spend some quality time with my nearest and dearest 🙂 He starts radio next week as other health probs mean he can't have chemo or surgery - so fingers crossed Radio does it's job and shrinks the bugger!

Do any of you have any experience with private medical? I do have cover however, have stuck with the NHS so far as care and timescales have been great. I am however, considering going for a private consultation to see if scans are available to me (they are not via NHS as I had 2/13 positive nodes, think you need 3 or 4) Also, as I am AAA negative, I'm wondering if there might be more treatments or trials available?
Would be great to hear if you have any experience - I might also start a new thread to hear from the wider community.
P.S. still no sign of Onc appointment although only 2 weeks post op

I'm from the July 2008 thread! I'm well over it!
Chemo is scary, when you first hear those words. Definitely. But it's really not that bad. I was scared stiff, sitting in the chair waiting for the first infusion. I just wanted to run.....
I didn't & whilst it wasn't pleasant, it was do-able. Just keep your head down, get on with it, mark the dates off on the calendar, don't google, and you'll soon be through the other side.
It's so worth it to have your life back.

well done with venturing with the wig. I have got as far as having my hair cut into a bob and have a wig in the same style and colour as my own waiting for me at the salon. im hoping the cold cap will work though. Otherwise itll be a mad dash to collect it
i am currently at work- on call night shift. probably my last one for about a mnth as my Mx is on Thursday 😞

Went for my Muga scan today, scan ok but the nurses couldn't get a vein in my left arm. previously always used my right which is now out of action due to ANC, ended up having one needle put in on my wrist and the other on top of my hand.
i have also taken a bit of control over the hair loss thing and am now the proud owner of my first wig. Wasn't as daunting as I thought it would be, so am going to wear about the house sometimes to get used to it so that when D Day comes it won't be so much of a shock.

I just sent you all a little message - but then lost it all when trying to post it aaarrrggghhhhh!!!!!

The short version is that I hope you are all doing well - sorry but I just can't redo the whole thing.

I'm due to have my MX with recon tomorrow and so far my hospital bag is half packed full of chocolate and wine gums ...... well I'm due to stay in for a week so thought I would need supplies! I'm not sure why but I feel incredibly strong and not too emotional about losing my boob - odd really. (terrified of losing my hair tho!)

I love reading all your posts - stay positive - this time next year we will all be able to right on other posts to say WE DID IT!!!

Hello Nicki, good luck for tomorrow, hope the margins are clear. I'm waiting for my results too this Friday (I had WLE and ANC on 7 Feb, and further excision on 7 March).
I've still got a lot of numbness AND hyper sensitivity in my underarm and down to my elbow, I've been doing the exercises so have got a good bit of movement back but have a way to go yet. The cording was pretty bad at first (I'm guessing that's what it was) and I found it painful even to straighten my elbow. Its only in the last week that that's got a bit easier. I asked for and got a referral to the physio, and its been great - just having someone to talk through specifically about my arm and motivate me with the exercises. She told me last week that she's been reading up about lympodoema too, so its been great.

The point about me rambline on about my own arm, is to say can you ask your BCN for a pysio referral?

Hope you've all had a good weekend - if you're not posting here then hopefully everyone is out doing "normal" things (despite the grotty weather)! Going back to see my surgeon tomorrow morning at Stoke Mandeville to find out if I have clear margin (so many fingers crossed) and what the deal is with how many nodes they took out. A bit worried about swelling around and under my armpit and quite painful down to my elbow and beyond. All seemed to be going really well until I upped my excercises after week 1. Anyone else had similar issues? Although I did pull my drain out on day 2 and had to have it removed a day early 😞

Laura, please don't worry about hair loss. If cold cap fails, most hospitals will give you a voucher and a list of hairdressers local to you that accept these vouchers so you can have a free wig, or a greatly reduced one. You might have to have your hair a bit shorter with CC though. Most of the February Valentines have gone with this optiion (I'm one of the few that haven't) and are very happy with their wig.

Hi Awesome Angels . I'm another April 2012 chemo bunny. Loving your name and the comment someone made about triple A Duracell bunnies! As others have said, this chemo lark is doable and if it kicks cancer's butt into touch then it is worth doing. I couldn't have envisaged being one year on but here I am, booked to do the BCC Pink Ribbon Walk with 7 of my bunny friends in a few weeks time. Couldn't have imagined that a year ago! My bit of wisdom is to remember to laugh. Chemo has its dark moments so you hv to filter them with laughter. The support from others going through it at the same time is invaluable and like us april 2012 buns you will make friends for life. Share laughs about the horrors of losing your hair (not as bad as you imagine), share tips and enjoy each others company. Keep clear of google and don't believe what you read in the Daily Mail!!!! Check out BCC's headscarf workshops and be sure also to book yourself on a Look Good Feel Better workshop - you are allowed to google that! Hi everyone,
i would like to join your group too please as I'm hoping (never thought I'd say that!) my chemo will start in April. I was diagnosed dec 18th with IDC grade 2 25mm tumour and affected lymph nodes. ER+++ PR+++ Her2 -.Had WLE and ANC jan 17th. Found out it was grade 3 aggressive 49 mm tumour and 9/15 positive lymph nodes. Got clear margins round the lump however the surgeon found another dodgy bit which tested positive for cancer. Went back for a re excision on feb 14 this other bit is also grade 3 and there are lots more areas too so now I'm having an Mx on thurs 21st march and chemo is to start 2weeks later ( providing wound has closed up and no infection). The only prob I'm having is that surgery is at one hospital and I asked the oncologist/consultants and surgeons that I be transferred to another hospital for chemo and rads (various reasons-one being they offer the cold cap and another is I work there) back in december and I STILL have not been referred so various consultants ( my boss) and the gp are now involved to make sure it is in place by the time I have my op next week.
Im also 46 married with an amazing OH and 2 potty rescue dogs from abroad

which areas of the country are we all in?

Hi there AAA's just popping in from the 2012 April Bunnies thread ( Southpool, Gaynor, Vanns etc) to say hello and wish you all luck. Don't pop back often now, which is clearly healthy! Just a word about pro- biotics ; best not take them. I got so desperate to have my digestive system working while on FEC, that I took an actiMel. Not a good idea, as the healthy bacteria in the drinKs multiply too much in a chemo affected gut. Also, don't worry about health scares; eat sensibly and healthily, but do stock up on top grade green tea. If you can drink it, that is; a far cry from Iron Brew and whiskey? Maybe youcould do a comparqtive study?
Promise not to stalk you often, but you have all my very best wishes for what is to come. Its not easy, but it is doable, and losing your hair s not nearly as bad as you think; the wigs are fantastic, scarves can look stunning in the summer, and it does grow back again. It s a year of your life, which sounds horrific, but each stage in the treatment offers a new challenge.
You all sound amazing, so might popback occasionally to see how you are doing. ( don't miss this damned auto- correct!!)

Hey Laura, you're mum sounds a bit like mine. When I told her I needed breast surgery, she said that at my age (45) what did it matter about my boobs! (I'm sure she was trying to make me feel better).

Just read the article as posted by maggie, sorry, but I have to say what a load of old codswollop!! If you have any uncertainties, ask onco or chemo nurses when you meet them. If you really are worried about drinking or using cows milk, there are lots of non dairy milk around which will give you the needed calcium for a healthy diet. Goats milk, soya milk, hazlenut milk, almond milk, and others. I've tried some of these, but still use full fat cows milk. This is the second article about breast cancer issues in the Mail, the other one was codswollop too. Read the February Valentines thread to find it and our comments on it, and on whether or not to use cows milk. By the way, I asked my chemo nurse if I could use probiotic drinks and live yoghurts, she said yes, but check for yourself if unsure. Eat well, and take care.

Sarah41 - Happy Birthday for today..if its any consolation I have a pathalogical fear of losing my hair too..when we saw the surgeon and found out I was to have chemo..my Mum said to me as we walked across the car park.."Some women really suit shaved heads"..to which I dissolved into laughter and said.."I wont be one of them"..!! 🙂
I have been tentatively following your post for the Awesome April's..following my appointment with ONC today..I think I will be starting my chemo (TC x 4 with herceptin for 12 months) sometime mid April..I have asked them to delay it until after my nieces 18th and we are also trying to squeeze in a week away before it all starts..diagnosed 23rd January with small (13mm) IDC ER7+ PR- HER2+++ following biopsy etc, WLE & SNB on 7th Feb with further surgery on 22nd for Re Ex of 29mm DCIS, originally thought I'd escaped the dreaded chemo since BCN said possibility of just Rads and Tamoxifen..however due to HER2+++ and subsiquent need for Herceptin I have to have 4 rounds of chemo..I have been offered the 'choice' but as I said to him today there is no choice..if they recommend it and it improves my chances of kicking cancers butt..I will do whatever is necessary..!!
I am hoping due to the regime they have given me I wont have too many side effects (fingers well and truly crossed..!!) I've also opted to go for the cold cap (at this stage) if my hair starts to come out in clumps and end up patchy I will be taking the clippers to my head..I'm sure I'll really struggle when the time comes, but I'd rather have control of my hair loss than it have control of me..!!
I'm fortunate in that I have been working from home since my diagnosis..partly because the unit we were working from was closing down and partly due to my diagnosis..I want to let my treatment have as little impact as I can on my working life and fit it in as and when I can (I have great and very understanding bosses..all three of them..!!) I will just listen to my body and rest when I need to..!!
Still have a smile..intend to keep it that way..today is Friday which means vodka tonight 🙂

Hi, I think I will probably be a AAA! I had a right mx on the 4th February, have recovered well, except the seroma underneath that is really annoying! I am seeing my oncologist for the first time on Monday 18th!
I have been told no nodes were infected after a SNB (with my mx), so surgeon says chemo is preventative due to my age (I am 32 today!)
I am quite philosophical about the whole thing and suprisingly keeping strong! Love reading this forum to learn about everyones trip and all the different cancers and permutations, I think it will be nice for us to support each other!
I may start in March not sure, but I suppose I can still be part of your group (if u don't mind!)
I am dreading the chemo and losing my hair (I will look awful with no hair!) and worried about my 5 year old and how she will cope during the chemo! I just want to get on with it now so that I can finish!
I have been signed off work and they have been very understanding up to now, I am pretty sure that will continue, but can't see it forver, feeling guilty that I cannot work! Hope you are all coping well!
