Hi
Just wanted to say that I am facing a similar situation. I was diagnosed in 2012 at the age of 43, I had a lumpectomy and rads. Everyone said that as my cancer was low grade I'd be back to 'normal' quickly. Soon as I started rads and tamoxifen the fatigue began. I had a hysterectomy 18 months ago because of tamoxifen side effects which seemed to add to the fatigue. I went back to work in Sept 2013 as a primary teacher on a really good phased return organised by my Head and now work 4 days a week. However the fatigue means that I regularly have to take time off to 'refuel'. If I have no life outside of school and just rest whenever I'm not in work I can just about cope but with a family this just isn't possible which means I am totally exhausted all the time. I've now been referred to our Occ Health Consultant. I have a 'Reasonable Adaptions' form to fill in with my Head and have applied for Access to Work support. However I honestly don't know what they can do to help. I've already dropped my hours and the only soulution I can see is to drop my hours right down or change my career.
Hi hobo and josie
Sorry to hear about your experience with your employers Hobo.I dont think that is an acceptable response.
It sounds worth looking into early retirement on grounds of ill health. Try the macmillian advice phoneline.
Early retirement doesnt have to mean the end of your working life, I think it just means that you are saying you are not physicially capable of doing your existing job. So at some point in the future you might want to explore doing a little bit of another type of work that is less demanding.
Hi Hobo, I'm sorry you're having such a tough time, you are not a failure, look how far you've come already. Are you able to contact your bc nurse to see if there is local professional support for you to help work through this. It's clear the job isn't working for you at the moment, but they will be able to help figure out if you need physio and help you with forms. I'm sorry I can't be more help as I've been looking for posts about other people who have changed jobs to help shed some light for me. I've just finished rads after mx and chemo. I'm trying to work out what to do about my job as I'd only been in a new job for 4 months before I was diagnosed. So I'm going to be starting from scratch again when I return and I'm not sure I want to go through all that stress and work such long hours any more, particularly as I originally changed jobs after 15 years because of the stress/workload. I'm starting a course in a couple of weeks which is designed to help individuals get back to a full life following cancer treatment be it emotional, physical or psycological welbeing. I'm sure there will be something similar near you. It will work out xx
