Anyone had synthetic wig styled?

I got first wig last November and the lady who does Macmillan service locally basically can cut it to suit but … Before cancer one of my face treats was having my hair styled pampered and. Used top end products and stylists, bein a younger chick it’s just something I enjoyed indulging in.

This lady is a hairdresserbut the salon if u can call it that specializes in blue rinses and she basically tells you to come in and your put in what is a cupboard with a mirror while the ‘real’ clients sit thru a paper thin wall listening. All in all a humiliating experience and to put the icing on the cake she just lobs bits off unevenly and says she has to get back to her customer.

I got my second wig re ently and decided no way I want it done nice rather than look like a scarecrow for the next six months. Every person in the treatment room with a wig looks the same, just bloody obvious.

I have gone to my old stylist who has agreed to try altho never worked with synthetic hair. He has arranged a late app with glass of wine lol to steel the nerves, his more so.

Has anyone else had theirs cutby anyone other than a Macmillan trained wig fitter??

I bet it’s a disaster lol xxxx

Hi signet - my wig was supplied and trimmed fractionally by the salon recommended by hospital and came very well recommended. The trevor Sorbie site lists salons who are trained to cut wigs and lists them by area. May be worth a try. Don’t think I’d let a “blue rinse salon” loose on it either. My daughter volunteers for the Look Good, Feel Better workshops and also got recommmendaations for good salons in our area from some of the ladies she worked with. Good luck. Marli

Thanks marli that’s helpful xxxx

my usual stylist rob worked in various salons in Edinburgh and has done tv ads etcc models and stuff so I reckon it shouldn’t be too hard for him - gulp xxxx he is a great stylist and is keen to try. He us buying some wig scissors and specialist brushes etc.

I will give it a go and post the result lol we all need some light relief on
here xxxx

and if it’s disastrous I will blag it to the hospital that it met with a terrible accident and get a new prescription x

and next time try the listings u gave suggested.

It’s just easier to try this ad I live 52 miles from Edinburgh where I do know if a salon who specialise but having two under fives and a ten yr old it’s finding the time xxxxx

Hi

I had my wig styled by the fitter and it “kinked”. She said it was unusual for it to do that but to correct it- the wig had to be steamed as obviously it doesnt respond to wetting like normal hair would. It might just be worth warning your hairdresser so he is prepared. Hope it looks nice. debx

Hi. If your hairdresser looks on the Trevor Sorbie site mynewhair.org there is a section for hairdressers. They recommend cutting using a razor and say that most wigs have 40% too much hair. I had my wig styled by one of their trained stylists and the difference was remarkable. In the end I chose not to wear the wig and used hats and scarves but it was reassuring to know it was ready should I need it. Good luck.

Hi,
I had two wigs. The first one the lady who supplied the wig was also a hairdresser and managed to style it really nicely for me.
the second one I actually got via Trevor Sorbie and he styled it himself in one of his sessions at his Brighton salon.
They both turned out really nicely and even when I washed them in the sink and left them to dry, they looked good!
hope that helps too.

I really agree with karenap
I consider myself a bit of a wig expert as I am now on my 4th one ( I’m one of the unfortunate few whose hair has not re-grown : it is still really thin and patchy after 2 years)

I have worn a wig all of the time (outside my home ). I really, really hate having lost my hair but have reconciled myself to wig-wearing as the alternative (in my case) is not a good look.

When I acquired my most recent wig ( the same make & model as previously and pretty similar in colour & shape to my original hair) I took it to a Trevor Sorbie trained hairstylist and paid £70 for him to cut and thin it. It was not an expensive wig (£60 thro the hospital) but he has done a great job on it and it is now shorter and more stylish, as I felt I wanted a change

I have had compliments about my new ‘hair’ style not just from those in the know but also from a number of people who did not even know that I had had BC and was wearing a wig.

When wigs are new they all look shiny and ‘false’ until they are washed and worn a few times but I really do not think that they need to look’ wiggy’ after that.

I think the trick is to be ‘natural’ yourself when you wear it and not be self-conscious; most people are really not that observant unless you have pointed it out to them …or you are wearing it at a bizarre angle -or have chosen it badly in the first place.

Hi signet,
I had my wig trimmed at Trevor sorbie in Manchester. The salon was really ultra modern and it felt like when I normal haircut. They had a really posh refreshment bar with coffees, champagne, posh fruit flavoured teas and mineral waters, and you got a menu with them on and ordered one as part of the cost. The stylist was specially trained and obviously cut wigs all the time. She chopped lots out of it, trimmed ig beautifully snd made thd back really taper in to thd nape of my neck and did the fringe to shield my eyebrows. We were in a lovely seperste room and she was there all the time, no pooping out. I felt like a really important valued client and young and trendy rather than old and wiggy. Well worth the 60wuid ad I normally spend more ony hair than that anyway. Good luck, hope it goes ok whatever u decide.

Hi Lyn,

I have a synthetic wig and I’m very pleased with it, my husband and daughter said it looks just like my own hair. I got mine through a small hairdressers in Ware Herts (they only deal with cancer patients)which was recommended to me by my nurse when I went for my first appointment to discuss my Chemo treatment. Sorry to hear you have had a real bad time, I don’t know where you live but perhaps you could ask at your local hospital if there is a hairdressers in your area that just deals with cancer patients.

Hope you get it sorted as our hair make us what we are when we go out.

Best wishes
Whinnie
