Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Dear Bella (HappyCarrot), you are sounding a lot brighter from the way you are writing which is great news. Probably best to avoid the weepy films at the moment if you can though a good cry can often help get things out of your system.
I don't know what your work is, and you are being sensible about a phased return but please take it careful, especially as you have more treatments to go. I know that everyone has different circumstances and pressures around work but my surgeon has already told me he expects me to be off work a min 3 - 4 months after my op for both physical and emotional recovery and that is just an mx and recon without any further treatments (hopefully, apart from a reduction on the other side later in the year). I have always been a workaholic if I am honest but havent missed it for the last few weeks and will certainly not be rushing back until I know I can cope (I travel long haul a lot and spend a lot of my time training senior managers so need the confidence).
Anyway, please take care and keep us posted.

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hello Ladies

Not posted on this thread but have on the starting chemo in Sept. I had my mx and full lymph clearance on Monday. It went very well and I am now back home and doing my exercises faithfully! A bit sore and swollen but when the district nurse came this morning she says everything looks okay. Have a bit of fluid sloshing about but no drain as my surgeon does not use them. I honestly feel positive and very relieved that it is over. I only have rads to go and then later this year will think about a recon. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and this forum has been a godsend to me from the start! Good luck to all other January mx'ers - please feel free to pm me if you want to ask anything at all. Ali xx

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hello Lelly61, thank you so much for your lovely thoughts and words. You are so right, and this forum is excellent for appreciating that we are all at different levels and dealing with shocks right, left and centre! I am quite over it now. I had some work mates over for a visit on Saturday and that brought me out myself a bit and just decided to get on with it anyway. I'll try to get back to work on a phased return, get through the radiotherapy - 5 weeks of that - and see how I get on. At the moment, my under arm hurts like blazes with the exercise!
I do hope you are doing okay yourself and that goes for everyone who's tuning in. Btw, went to see Warhorse at pics and thought it was rather too sentimental, although I used to love Black Beauty : ). Planning to see The Artist during the week sometime.
Love in abundance to you all. Bella xxxx

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Dear Happy Carrot, pleased to hear that the mx has gone very well but so sorry to hear the news from your results, must have been a big shock. The important thing is that this has been picked up and they are moving forward quickly with a plan for you so sounds like you are getting the support you need at a medical level. As you say, this whole situation we are all in, at whatever grade or stage, makes us much more philosophical about life and what is really important.
My thoughts are with you and I send you gentle hugs

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hi Lovely Ladies! Lin, it's great to hear you have got through it...not so bad eh? I got drain out 3 days later and I haven't had any fluid build up at all. I'm doing those exercises about 4 times per day. I've been a bit stiff and sore the past few days, but this morning much better. I take the dog out for the walks and do the exercises while walking about - I must look hysterical, goose stepping about whirling my arms about my head!

Today I had meeting with team to discuss the results and further treatment, it was brought forward a week. Was worried about it and turns out with good reason...they took 28 lymph nodes and 17 of them had cancer in them. Seems that the chemo didn't work very well in reducing/shrinking and now it's all about whether there has been any mets. Getting scans sorted for bone, organs etc, plus getting started on Tamoxifen very soon and probably 5 weeks of radiotherapy. Got to meet with radiotherapist on Monday for plan. The surgeon seemed to be preparing me for worst case scenario but equally, nurse said we'll work on getting through the first year with no recurrence, then second then fifth.

I must say, it knocked me for six and I've been very philosophical today about life, the future and quality of life issues. The mx scar and soreness concerns have been supersceded by the news that I might have much more invasive cancer which would be managed by an array of treatments. Just have to wait and see and not obsess too much...oops, here I am at 2.50 am still mulling over the news! Sorry for huge posting again! Gentle hugs to all you ladies going in for surgery and post op results.
p.s. Comfy and bra left off for a day or two and forgot I only had one boob!

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hi all,

I was dx in september had 1st WLE and SNB in October. Had 6/14 nodes involved and was told I had grade 2 lobular invasive carsinoma but they could not get clear margins. I had a 2nd WLE and ANC on 28th November. Another 11 nodes were all clear but margins were not so was advised MX. This totally terrified me and begged for immediate recon (I still need chemo and rads). Saw the PS on 28th December we had a good chat and he ask how I felt about a double prophylactic mastectomy as lobular has a very high risk of reacurrence in the other breast also this type is very hard to detect. To be fair from day one I have wanted this option if the only option I was left with was MX as I dont want to go through this night mare again (I know nothing is 100%) The PS and I agree on a double mastectomy with immediate LD recon with implant on good side and expander on the bad and as PS said if rads messed up my bad side he could redo. This was done on th 4th jan. I am not going to say it has been easy. I had a mini break down on my way into theatre and was going to flee the hospital dont know were I thought I was going lol. Was in a quite a lot of pain when I woke up but this was soon sorted by the amazing nursing staff couldnt get out of bed for a couple of days. but am a week on now out of hospital after 5 days still on paracetamol and cant sleep on my stomache but glad I have done it and have this part over with. Do the exercises, gently, every day without fail as this really helps. The main thing id like to say is its not as bad as you think the fear of the unknown really cracked me up. Hope all your ops go well and if anyone wants to ask me anything at all by all means do and I will answer you as honestly as I can.

Love, Jennie

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hooray came through my op - not too bad apart from throwing up afterwards. General anaesthetics always do that to me.

Home same day, but very late 10 ish and went straight to bed. But ok today, bit woozy but not too much pain.
Lop sided but it looks sort of boyish... Hope it won't look too bad when the bandages come off.

Is everyone else ok?

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Oh great to hear from Bella - thanks so much, I'm in on Weds for my mx. Had the pre assessment today and I have my softie to stick down my bra afterwards, then when it's all healed up they will measure me up for a sort of extended fried egg in silicone as a longer lasting prosthesis.
But really good to hear that not too much pain and quick recovery. HOpe I'm the same.
Caroline and Sandy - all the very best for tomorrow.... we're all supporting you!

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Thinking of you Caroline,
I had never had any hospital treatment before my dx. I too went in the day before my mx/DIEP at the end of November. I was really scared when it came to it, scarednof everything including the catheter afterwards. Don't be afraid to mention you're scared and I'm sure the staff will support you, a nice nurse came down with me and even collected me from recovery afterwards.

You'll soon be over the worst and on the other side.. A few days of various discomforts to starter with.. For me shoulder pain and a headache were my worst pains. I couldn't feel my tum or breast at all. On day three after op I had catheter out and shuffled to the loo, on day four I had a shower and could shuffle around the ward...so not long to go!!

Hope it goes well and if I can do anything at all for you, just ask.

Hugs

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hi Caroline and Sandy45,
Do hope your time in hospital goes smoothly and you're ok about all the initial proceedings before anaesthetic.
I'm a complete wimp with injections so I asked for the 'magic cream' that they put on children and it helped no end to calm me down because obviously it doesn't hurt but the fear is quite huge isn't it?
I had 3 ops before mx but can never know how with all the nerves and jitters I ever signed the forms! It still makes me laugh now!
I even laughed with the staff.....
No one knows how we're going to react in these situations!
Also I fell in love instantly with my third anaesthetist! He was so lovely whereas the first two spoke to me as if I was three! Yes, I know I was behaving like a three year old but you still need that professional care from one who can respect your tears.

I'll be thinking of you both.

Nels and Bella, I can't thank you enough for posting when you did.. I go into hospital tomorrow for surgery on Tuesday and if I'm being honest with myself I'm shi**ing it as well. I've never even had a stitch before and am very nervous about going under anaesthetic but your posts have calmed me down a bit. I'm having an immediate reconstruction so slightly different and I'll be in for a few days, just wish I could smuggle some wine in with me!

Lizcat, good luck I hope all goes well for you..

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hi all
I had my mx on Friday, and stayed in overnight, although could have come home the same day. My experiences at this very early stage are similar to Bella's although I haven't had a drain - the surgeon told me he doesn't use them, which is a bit worrying as it seems quite puffy now. I haven't really looked down too much yet, but generally I have found it do-able so far. Unfortunately there were no breast care nurses at the hospital over the weekend, which was difficult as i just wanted advice from them about looking after the wound etc.. Hopefully they will contact me tomorrow.
Lots of hugs to everyone!

Well done you!
Really feeling for you Kazoo with your waiting. It's not easy but after my mx (similar to you with 2 lumpectomies before) I felt emotionally so much calmer and I was scared s***less beforehand!!!
However, body wasn't too calm.....

Best wishes to all posters on this thread.

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hi there
I'm in Ireland and going in for masectomy Monday morning. Am s***ing myself if truth be told but it's great to read all your experiences. I was diangosed nearly a year ago, put on hormone tablets and chemo first to reduce large tumour and have had two WLEs and an auxillary node clearance in the past couple of months. Sadly no clear margins. Am getting my head around masectomy but it's difficult, people keep asking how I feel about it and I feel like shouting at them!! I worry about body image and sex and stuff like that, I can't get reconstruction for several months as will need radiotherapy and my surgeon says it's best to wait. I am told the prosethesis are good these days though and no one (apart from me and husband) will be able to tell the difference. It's a rollercoaster, this site is good even though you are all in a different country and procedures are obviously a bit different.

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hello again lovely ladies!

Thank you so much for your good vibes and kind thoughts, they must have made it through because the MX was a dawdle - went in at 7 am in the morning, got prepped and was in the theatre by lunchtime (3rd on the surgeon's list that day). Suddenly I was in recovery and then the ward and hey presto, next day I was on the way home! In London, they only keep you in for 24 hours. I did have a bit of a problem with sickness post op, I think the anasthetic didn't agree with me, but I got an anti emetic injection for that and got back on my feet an hour later. Ladies, really, I have not had any pain. The only pain I had was from that bleedin canula. I hope it is the last in a long time...! Even today, 2 days later, I have no pain, and even stopped taking the painkillers (only needed 2 yesterday as a precaution). I've done housework, my exercises and walked the dog - twice - i feel like wonderwoman!
The drain is a bit of a pain in that I keep forgetting I have one. However, I found one of my across the body little mini handbag things that I used for work and the drain fits in nicely and I can go about my business with my hands free. It will most likely come out tomorrow as the fluid is much less today and less bloody too. Prior to the op, I was, quite honestly, terrified. Especially of the drain but again, no pain whatsoever just a bit of a nuisance. Yesterday we even popped into the pub on our walk - I had a peppermint tea though, too soon after being sick I argued - and I was a bit self conscious about the tubes but nobody seemed to notice. So, another day or two and I'll be free - yipee! Then, I will be off to the pub for a nice lunch and a big glass of red wine. Girls, there is an end to this - okay it might be temporary, but it feels pretty good to be thinking of normal things again..nail polish, getting rid of the excess weight I've gained, shoes with heels, salads, cheeses and seafood! Ah!
Oh and another thing, the bra and comfy are the bees knees,I have forgot I've had a boob off...until I take the bra off and see the scar and bruising. Yes it was a bit of a shock at first sight but I don't mind now and even if one boob is a bit higher than the other sometimes, I don't care!
So, do not worry, the anasthetic is amazing and you will be over the op in no time.
Big huge hugs and kisses to you all. Bella xxx

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hi Nels, really hoping you can make this momentous decision in the short time allowed....
I had two lumpectomies before my mx but I had no choice because margins were not clear at 14cms! However when someone suggested at the end of the process that I should have just moved to mx after first WLE I stated quite strongly that it was imperative that I went through all the options before the final loss! It was a hideous time but I never ever regret that second WLE despite the final outcome which I now live with sadly.......

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hi all
I hope you don't mind me butting into this forum. I was dignosed beginning of Dec, and had lumpectomy - one margin not clear, and have now made the extremely difficult decision to have a mastectomy rather than WLE again. My operation was scheduled for 13th, but as of yesterday they offered me a slot for tomorrow. Aaagh... so will try to let you know how it goes. Really hope yours went OK Bella.

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hello lovely ladies, hope you all had a good Christmas - isn't it great to see the chemo behind you (though I had a bad bout of mouth ulcers, a visit from Tax past I think!). For those of you still undergoing chemo, it does end and you get through it. Looking back I am proud that I managed to do it though I felt really rough with the last one on 2nd Dec. Each day gets better though.
My MX date was 10th Jan but I got a call this morning asking if they can do it on 3rd Jan. It's a simple MX I've opted for and will see about a recon a year or so from now. Just felt I'd be glad to get the tumour out (the nodes come out too but it's only the one side) and deal with that and the rads. Want to get it over with but a tad daunted by the thought of surgery. Had an op in 2005 for fibroids and that took years to overcome. Plus I've developed a hatred of needles and canulas! Oh well, another hurdle before the finish line! I've started doing the exercises already to prepare the muscles for the workout - thanks for the tips on doing them religiously - I will make sure I don't slack. Probably easier said than done though. Hope you all have a happier and healthier 2012. Bella xx

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hi ladies,

Hope you all managed to have a nice christmas? I finally got my date for MX/ Recon - 10th January - eek!! I'm a bit nervous but also glad it's soon so there's not a lot of time to worry about things.
I've changed plans slightly and now I'm only getting surgery on one side and am also getting the LD flap instead of the DIEP. I'm really confident in my surgeon, I think I've landed on my feet getting the one I have 🙂 a few weeks and it'll all be done!!

How's everyone else feeling about their surgery?

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Thanks lollypop. Got a meeting with my consultant next Friday do hopefully I can ask some questions then. Feeling quite bothered about losing the reconstruction and being left with nothing. Find looking at clothes a bit upsetting as I won't have a cleavage to flash any more. Just starting to worry about holidays & swimming etc too, not that I have any planned! Part of me is happy to have all the tissue removed and hopefully knock this on the head once and for all (was six years clear before my re-occurrence ) but I think I'm more upset than I admit to friends/family about being butchered!

Hi my MX will be the second week in Jan I think. Can anyone tell me about recovery times? Whilst they say it's a simple MX ( no recon) I was wondering how long I will need to take it easy. When will I be able to drive again (it's my left side)

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hope you don't mind me butting in at this late stage in the thread, especially as I am in a slightly different position to you ladies but I am (all being well) having a mx towards the end of Jan at my request.

I was originally diagnosed July 07 with primary and secondaries in bones. Had chemo first, then mx and full anc, rads and hormone therapy. I didn't have recon as I didn't want it and they never offered !! My scar is 9 inches long but healed really quickly as the surgeon was fab with his needlework. I had the op on the Weds night and was discharged on Sat lunchtime after drains were removed. Only needed a couple of paracetamol while I was in hospital. Make sure you do any exercises they give you - it's important, especially if you are having lymph nodes out. I developed lymphoedema quite soon afterwards and still have it now, although thanks to a great massage lady and wearing my sleeve, it's nowhere near as bad.

Anyway, why am I posting after all this?? Having felt lopsided for so long and my posture dropping to my right side partly due to the bone secondaries in my spine, I eventually got round to making an appt to see the surgeon to ask if he would do a mx on my 'good' side to balance me up. He has agreed to do it and can see my fuzzy logic and I have a pre-op appt for 16th Jan with surgery a week or so later. I will then have the choice of having a cleavage or not and get on with planning holidays etc!!! The surgeon says I will be able to fly again 4 weeks after the op - yippee!!

So to those of you on the verge of surgery, good luck and don't be afraid. It's another positive step on your way to recovery.

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hi all and Merry Christmas!

Thanks Welsh girl for sharing your experiences - we will all get through it I guess. I'm hoping that after the simple mx I will only be a couple of weeks and then back to work.. But everyone seems to get seroma afterwards so maybe it won't be as simple as that.

I think we're all in hospital at about the same time - most of us are saying mid Jan - mine is 11th. So we can all make the most of Christmas and have a few drinks to fortify ourselves for the surgery ahead!

I'm cheating ladies - we are away to Spain for a week from 30th Dec. Can't wait. We booked it to celebrate finishing the chemo. So I will just be back from holiday and then into hospital.

Lots of love to all and Christmas wishes.

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

I've just posted a very long and detailed summary of my recovery when I had my mx in Feb 2010 and unfortunately lost it!!!
B**s!!!
I just wanted to reassure you that I'm two years ahead of you with a simple mx (there was nothing simple about it!)and I have recovered at my own rate, which was slow....
But I returned to work and socialising again within a year but still feel there is more emotional recovery to come....
I have other health issues too so it wasn't straightforward and maybe you have too...
I've learnt a great deal through this horrid journey and I'm stronger for it. You will be too.
It's not easy but with support you will get through this.
Don't give up on your exercises too early, I did and I've paid the price!!! From my experiences it's not a simple route forward but I wanted to offer you my encouragment and send you all huge hugs of support to enable you to manage Christmas as well as you can.
The waiting is HELL.
Once I woke up after the op I was so relieved to be getting on with my recovery but don't rush it....It really does take its time and I don't feel you can take short cuts!

Once again, I hope I haven't butted in but I wanted you to know there is very normal life after 18/24 months. Emotionally I'm still coming to terms with the attack on my body but I'm not sad because I'm alive and moving forward....
Keep supporting each other....and you'll move forward together.
Our group started nearly two years ago and we're still supporting each other. Many different concerns now but some of us are still having reconstruction ops, and so it goes on.....

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hi,I've just joined the site because I am expecting to have a mastectomy and reconstruction in January. I had a lumpectomy in August but they found DCIS, so I have had chemo (last one Weds 14th). I would like an immediate recon as I don't want to keep going back for surgery. I don't know which kind I am going to have yet and joined the site to find out how other women had found the different types, particularly recovery, when you can drive etc. I think the likely options will be DIEP or LD flap but I'll have to see what the surgeon says.
I would like to be in touch with anyone going through it at the same time for moral support.
Although I want to get on with it so I can get my life back, I am worried about it and how I am going to feel afterwards.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks, Sue

Hi Bella,

Here's the link to BCC's publication regarding breast surgery which you may find helpful.

Also do give the helpline a ring and have a chat with the nurses, they're here to support you through this.

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hi Ladies,
I noticed this thread, and hope you don't mind if I join you as I'll be having it off in Jan too? Just finished last chemo on Fri 2nd Dec then had mri and mammogram/ultrasound last week so will meet with the team and surgeon this Friday. Think I'll be in early to mid Jan for an MX, looking at the size on the ultrasound. It was 4 cm shrunk to about 2 cm by 2 cm (but my boobs are about 5 cm's total)! I'll also have nodes cleared then rads. By the way, do MRI scans suck or what! My bottom lip still quivers when I think of it! One MRI was almost as bad as 6 chemo sessions..I could go on!
Tracy xx, I hope you are doing ok these days? What a shock that must have been, I often worry about bone mets myself.
Hope you are all doing well and will get back when I know more.
love and hugs, Bella

Hi Ladies
Awaiting a date but believe they are aiming for January. Having an SNB first on the 22nd Dec. Will be having immediate recon followed later by a reduction in my other breast to match them up. Need to discuss options for recon in more detail though with BCN as I was only given one option of an implant but want to see if I have other options as well, even if I have to wait a bit longer.
I have not had to have chemo or rads first so my heart goes out to you all, sounds like you are all coping well though and keeping strong.

Caroline that sounds like a big operation. Are they doing both breasts at the same time?
I think you will need to take it very easy for a good few weeks afterwards. Good time to spoil yourself.
Unfortunately it's not going to be the best time of year to be at home recovering from surgery. January and February. We could have timed it better couldn't we girls?

Re: Anyone having MX surgery in January?

Hi girls.

Linstar don't be silly, you look fine to me but hey I guess we all feel the same with what we're going through just now.

I met my surgeon on Friday and she's referring me to the plastic surgeons to speak to them about doing my TRAM/DIEP flap. I'm opting now to only go for a single mastectomy and they'll give my healthy breast a lift so both sides match. Good enough for me I think and it's less surgery/recovery etc. Depending on plastics they're saying op will be around 10th jan so we'll be around the same time. I'm a bit nervous about it now but also excited because it's another step closer to beating this. How is everyone else feeling about theirs?

Mx and recon which I knew but he has now decided he can reduce the other side at the same time to even me up.I have big boobs and am abit droopy so hopefully I will wake up with nice perky girls a cup size smaller. I just have to think of it as a breast reduction otherwise I am going to send myself made with worry.
Hope you are all coping well
