Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi Josie, welcome to the thread. Good luck with your chemo tomorrow. The team send you home with a pack of anti-nausea pills which really worked for me. I took them as prescribed, ate small meals often and drank plenty of squash and I was fine. I did have nausea but wasn't sick once. I also found ginger biscuits helped too. Mind you I was a wine drinker (still have the occasional drop) so that may have put me in good stead! Take care, let us know how you get on x

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Welcome Josie

I haven't heard that one. Looks like should be no nausea for me. Although I'm 41 (i have a 10 year old as well). I had zero morning sickness and have plenty of experience with the alcohol!!!
Good look tomorrow

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

You're right Joyce, we don't know what lies ahead and I'm preparing myself as my oncologist said that the side effects get progressively worse so I'm appreciating every good day I have. Fanta, I too had my hair cut in prep - from shoulder to short style.  My hair is continuing to fall out and I also plan to have it shaved but think I'll wait until it starts to look patchy, at the moment, it's thinning all over. Disco D, I'm sorry you didn't manage to get a ticket to see Bette, I was just very lucky to be on the internet at the right time. Best wishes everyone x

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi everyone, please can I join you? I'm starting chemo tomorrow so the nerves are really kicking in! I'm 45 with two boys of 8 & 10. It's lovely to hear other people's experiences and you are all so positive! The oncologist said that people who are younger, had bad pregnancy sickness and don't drink alcohol are most likely to get bad nausea ... It gave us a smile at the time as my immediate reaction was 'then I'm stuffed' and everyone laughed, but if I'd known, I'd have been getting in training with the wine..! Take care everyone, x

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

It's so helpful to read all of these posts! I have been avoiding brushing my hair and have had a couple of dreadlocks that I have had to comb out resulting in much hair loss. And I feel so out of control with the hair loss thing. After reading these posts I think I feel tempted to go for a short crop at least, but then, what if I manage to keep some or even 50% of my thick hair?! I used to have long hair that I had cut short in preparation, to shoulderlength. But seeing hair fallout is so distressing and messy. Arrrrgh!

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

sounds like you had a fantastic time and exactly the right attitude. Like you I am determined to do things when I can because there are quite a few days when really all I want to do is stay in bed. So enjoy the good days - even if there are those out there who think we treat it like a holiday!!! A holiday is certainly not what I would call it.Just gong into my third week of first chemo and planning a couple of outings - don't know what is around the corner after second one - enjoy.

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

l wanted to share my weekend with you guys to show that we can still enjoy ourselves during this treatment. Before I was diagnosed I'd booked to see the fabulous Bette Midler in Manchester. Thinking that the drive up on Saturday and back on Sunday might be too much (I live in S. Wales), I booked a night in Blackpool on Friday to break up the journey.

I had a fantastic weekend, a real tonic. I sang and danced and forgot about the cancer and treatment for the night. Earlier on Saturday in the hotel, my hair started to fall out big time but all over, not in clumps so didn't notice to others ( I was on day 19 of my 1st cycle of FEC). If I'd been home I probably would have been upset but, with a night to look forward to, I just combed out the loose hair, put my make up on and had a great night.

I'm now planning a treat for the third wk of each cycle. Not on the scale of a Bette Midler concert,  just simple things that give me joy, like a trip to the beach.

My second treatment of FEC is on Friday and already I feel more prepared for it because of the lovely experience I've just had. My partner was concerned that I'd done too much, my reply was I'd do as much as I can, when I can. Wishing you all well and hope you manage to get some good times on your good days x

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi ladies,
I hope you don't mind me joining in. I'm due to start 1st chemo on Friday. I'm having 4 x TC. Is anybody else I the same regime?
Hope you are all well
X

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi all had my first chemo session on Friday was fine not had many side effects so far apart from feeling slightly sick that night! So fingers crossed it stays that way! Good luck to everyone going or starting treatment soon xx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi Fanta-B glad to hear that your diagnosis was good. I've heard that thicker hair fairs better with chemo - mine is fine but there is a lot of it. I'm also going to try cold cap but went to wig shop on Friday to try some on as I intend to get one on line if mine starts to fall out too much - apparently they take about 3 days in the post if you're not going for the real hair wigs. I think I've decided on the Tatum as its close to my own hair. Good luck with your second chemo next Thursday xxx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hello all. Glad to have found this group! am due for 2nd FECon Thursday 16. I have had a lumpectomy and LICAP. Wore cold cap and didn't mind it too much but I have thick hair which apparently helps. Side effects from FEC not too bad. First week was tired and has no appetite and constipation or the other way! Am shedding hair but not handfuls. More a few if I run my hands through my hair (am trying to be disciplined!!). I am wondering whether to get a wig now, the weather to see if it's just a shedding or if I'm losing it. My cancer was a rare type called invasive medullary carcinoma. Am seeing a geneticist as there is possibly a link. I was lucky with no lymph node involvement. Cxx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Thanks Carolec.
Went I went to meet the chemo team they showed me a model and explained where the port goes, they showed me a PICC line too, they are different. Hopefully it'll become clear for you. The nurse said a port under the skin on the chest was most common for breast cancer. I guess it depends on lots of factors.
It's been a week and a day since my first chemo session, and I'm feeling good. Had my last injection today of lenograstim (which I hate doing).
I hope everyone is doing well and able to enjoy the weather a bit x

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Carole, I got my appointment letter today re PICC & also 'group educational talk'.  it's on Friday 31st at 9am & then back the following day at 9.30 for the first cycle.  Hard work all this running backwards & forwards!  At least I've now got a temporary parking permit & will be issued with one for the duration of chemo, because the parking fees are certainly not cheap.

The difference between PICC lines & ports (short for port-a-cath) is the position of insertion I think.

Hope your ECG is ok.

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Nico I hope you'll be able to visit the chemo unit before your treatment and at least it will give you a feel for the place. I totally agree and also just want to get this started - just seems to be one hospital appointment after another at the moment but nothing really going on. Going for an echo cardiogram tomorrow as there is some history of heart disease in the family and I have to take Herceptin. Hope your port goes well Manicmum - must say after actually seeing it and reading the lovely posts on here feel much more confident about having it. I was told I wS having a PICC line but nurses referred to it as a port so maybe same thing? Lalie and everyone who has had first chemo hope you are doing ok - I'm having 12 weeks of taxol but not sure if anyone else is having this - hope you enjoy the rest of her weekend xxx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi everyone
I was just wondering if anyone had been to a HeadStrong appointment and if you rated it. I've booked one for next week but I'm not sure whether to go. Jo x

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi Carole

I forgot to mention I'm having a PICC line.  It seems to be standard procedure at my hospital, to save the veins. Don't know why some have a PICC & some have a port though.

I hope you were reassured by your visit to the unit.  I hope I will also have a preview because it helps to be able to visualise the place I find.  Just waiting for the chemo people to contact me re blood tests etc but I suppose it won't be until near the end of July.

I think I will stay with this thread (since I started it), as there are so many lovely fellow travellers here, but will see if an August one starts too, out of interest.

Nico xxx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi Lalie

Sorry, I didn't see your post until now.  Gosh 4 lots of chemo - you really are a veteran!  Really good news that your results are showing an improvement already & I hope that continues.

I just feel like I'm waiting around now.  I was sure I would be starting this month, so it's a bit frustrating because i just want to know that I'll be ok during treatment. Still, at least I have time to help my mother with her house move etc before chemo starts.

Best wishes

Nico xx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Thank you for the information Tweasel and Kate2 - good to know that it's easily doable. I went to the chemo unit today and met some lovely nurses and also others who were undergoing chemo. One man very proudly showed me his port (and his tanned chest!) and a lady who was trying the cold cap for the first time spoke with me and she also had a port fitted. They booked my port fitting and first chemo for 6 August when I'm back from my hols so theoretically shouldn't be in the July thread but like Nico, hope you don't mind if I stick with this one xxxx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi Carole,

I am May starter but would echo Tweasel's comments - I didn't have time to get the port fitted before my first treatment and they struggled to find my veins - white coat syndrome!! I would not hesitate to recommend getting the port fitted - it makes the treatment and blood testing so much easier and quicker. Avoids any fainting episodes too!

I also had the port fiited under local anaesthetic with sedation too but general anaesthetic is also an option.

For your treatments, the hospital should also give you some numbing cream to apply to the port area 30 mins before you attend the hospital but it is really easy to use.

Good luck.

Kate

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi Carole. I'm from the January starters thread but I saw your question about having a port fitted so hope you don't mind me gatecrashing! I had a port fitted in January 2 days before my first chemo and I have never regretted it. My chemo finished in May but I am having Herceptin until next Spring so my port will stay in until then. I was quite nervous about having it fitted, but it was very straightforward. It takes around 30 minutes to fit in theatre under local anaesthetic. There are 2 incisions - one tiny one to feed the tube through and then one around an inch long where the port is inserted. Mine is just on my collarbone on the left hand side. The surgeon who fitted it puts them close to the surface so it's quite prominent. It took a while to get used to seeing it all the time, but it's really easy for the chemo nurses to access. I have had no trouble with it at all. If you aren't sqeaumish there are videos on Youtube that show the procedure - my OH watched it beforehand but I wasn't brave enough! Hope you are doing ok xx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi kobeobe7 , my first FEC was ok thanks. Was sick in the evening, but apart from that I'm just tired, which is frustrating. I had so much energy and now have none! I'm having chemo first then surgery, the lump was too big to take out straight away.
I hate being in and out of school, but like you say nearly the end of term, which is just as well.
Keep smiling xx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Carolec im having my port out in a week today, not looking forward to it evither, but should make the treatment easier xx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Manicmum glad your CT scan and MRI were clear and that your girls had fun trying on your wig. It must be hard for you and DiscoD with young girls - its bad enough for me and mine are teenagers.  Having said that your kids love you unconditionally and its surprising how resilient they can be.  I'm trying to stay positive, but its difficult for us all in this horrible situation.  I'm going wig shopping on friday as although I'm hoping to try the cold cap, I've heard a lot of women lose their hair anyway.  I'm taking my sister and one of our best friends and also my youngest daughter as we are staying with my Mum in London for the night, so that should be a giggle.  I'm also going to have a port put in (think they said in the chest) which doesn't sound nice so if anyone has had one of these please let me know how you got on.  Hugs, Carole xxx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

I had my initial meeting with the oncolgist today. Well, his registrar who was lovely but so young. I'll be having FEC T starting on 22/7. I had got my head around the prospect of my diagnosis and chemo. Or thought I had but when the registar said they hadn't got clear margins with my op I felt that awful panic/fear/rollercoaster starting again. Last week my breast surgeon had said the op went well with lymph nodes clear but didn't mention the margins. Now I can just feel that horrible sick feeling of worry again.
Manicmum how was your first FEC treatment? I'm a teacher too but haven't been back to work since my op as I can't drive yet and there's only a couple of weeks left. The nurse today stressed that chemo isn't as bad as people fear so fingers crossed for us all x

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Well, went and got my wig yesterday. I couldn't face the cold cap, I suffer from terrible migraines and thought I would be best to avoid. My girls are very amused with the idea of me losing my hair (although the realitity no doubt will be very traumatic for them). They had a great laugh trying on my wig.
Had a clip put in the tumor this morning, followed by another mammogram. Good news though and my CT scan was clear and the MRI on,y showed what they knew already. Having a port put in for the chemotherapy next week, which I'm not looking forward to.
I've been doing to work as much as I can. I'm a primary school teacher and it's so hard not to be with my class and for them to ask me why I haven't been ill.
Hey ho nearly the end of term, and the second round of chemo.
Keep strong everyone. Much love x

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi Ros, I was at the hospital about 3 hrs, half hour before chemo and 45 minutes after because of cold cap. Chemo given slowly through injections along with saline drip - took about half hour. Felt no discomfort or adverse effects from that, it was almost an anti-climax! I did suffer with the cold cap though. I found it very painful and felt sick, the nurse and my husband said I should remove it, that's when I burst into tears because I felt frustrated and knew if I didn't do it on the first cycle, I couldn't use it for the rest. I honestly don't know if I'm going to try it for my 2nd cycle next week, I'll have to see how I feel. Of course, not everyone struggles with the cold cap and I certainly think it's worth a try.

Other tips: I have problems with my veins but the nurse put my hand in warm water for 10mins before inserting the cannula then put a heat pad around my arm during treatment, that worked a treat; I wish I'd listened to advice on here about taking movicol or similar before constipation becomes a problem (definitely not fybogel, I learnt from experience!), I ended up with suppositories from my GP and was in a lot of pain and discomfort; take all the anti-sickness meds, I felt nauseous but wasn't sick, ginger biscuits helped too!; I had a reaction to dexamethasone, a burning hot red face and neck for 2 days and was told off by onc team for not phoning them; on day 8 of my cycle I had diarrhoea, contacted emergency number and prescribed Loperamide, worked instantly; eat little and often and drink plenty.

The fear and anticipation of chemo was actually worse than the actual chemo. I know it's early days and I may not be so lucky next time but so far, so good. Hoping your's and everyone else's goes as well. Take care and best wishesx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Apologies Joyce, I've just read your post about the injections x

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi Joyce, I hope you don't mind me asking but just wondering what injections are for. I've read that some women have injections to boost blood cells but I've not been offered this. Just wondering the criteria for this? Kind regards, Holly d

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Morning all. Hope everyone is well and enjoying the sunshine as much as possible. Ros hope your first chemo session went well today.
This is my first post and I am loving your ladies positive and encouraging thoughts and feelings. I found a lump in April and I honestly can't believe how fast things have happened, I was diagnosed with stage 2 er+ and her-. Although in all honesty I still don't understand what it all means. I had mastectomy and lnb in May followed by a second op for a flap clearance (which is such an unflattering thing to call it) and further lymph node removal. I found out yesterday that Thankfully no more lymph nodes have been infected with the dreaded C and my flap is now clear!!!!! First oncology appointment is Friday so I am thinking that chemo will start any time after that so would like to join your group.
I too have a 10 year old daughter who was in the middle of her sats when I had the first op. Bless her she has been a little diamond and I have to agree it is probably one of the hardest things I have ever had to do is to try and explain it all to her. We have been honest though and I think at 10 she understands a bit but I would hate to think I had to try and explain to a 4 year old it must be so hard.

We've been making jokes about Cher wigs and Daughter is looking forward to wig shopping but I think I'm going to follow some of your examples and try the cold cap.
It's right what they say the two things that probably make us the most feminine are are breasts and hair and not sure emotionally how we will all cope losing both!

I agree with the other posts it's not easy for friends to understand fully and the amount of people that said to me yesterday "well at least you can relax and enjoy the summer now" was untrue. Yeah summer is gonna be a blast for us all in It! Although I don't intend to sit moping if at all possible.

Looking forward to beating this bleep bleep thing with you all.

Sending positive thoughts, love and hugs to you all.

XOXO

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hope everyone is feeling well today. I'm off to see the chemo unit on Thursday and to look at the cold cap - going to give it a go at least. Manicmum and Jo - it's hard trying to explain things to your kids isn't it. My son is grown up but I have two girls, 16 and 18 who were in the middle of A levels and GCSEs when this started and I felt so guilty for having this disease! I have been really positive to them and that's difficult when you feel your world is falling apart, but we women are made of the strong stuff (got to keep telling myself that).
Jo - you have reminded me that I need to drag myself to the wig shop next week as need to fit that in between working part time and going on holiday on 23 July. Sending big virtual hugs to you all xxx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi Ros53

I had my first chemo and cold cap on a really hot day so it was great and didn't need a blanket etc. No icicles on my hair as they gave it a few minutes to "warm up" at the end of treatment. Total time with cold cap was about 3 hours - or should have been I in fact had a delay of 3 hours befoe starting the treatment!! I seem to have had quite a long gap between my mastectomy and chemo so it seems to vary quite a lot - surgery 22nd April and first chemo 1st July but pleased to have had the time to heal and feel almost human for a coupe of days.

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hello ladies
I hope you don't mind if I join your group. I'm meeting my oncologist on Wednesday and think I'll be starting chemo in a couple of weeks.
I'm 46, diagnosed 5 weeks ago, had mastectomy 3 weeks ago, triple negative and now waiting for chemo and rads after that. It's been an exhausting process so far, emotionally and physically. Wig is bought and waiting in box and my children given the 'talk'. Like you Manicmum I've tried to give my 3 boys enough info but want to protect them as much as I can. It's so hard to keep everything as normal for them as I can. I'm hoping we can all support each other and have found reading the posts really helpful.
Jo x

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Thanks Ros53, all so quick it's hard to take it in. Had a call either to say the CT scan results were clear, which is such a huge relieve. I'm tripping to stay as positive as possible and upbeat I front of my two girls, as I really don't want them to worry (they are 4&9).
How are you doing? Xx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hello ladies, reading these posts makes me feel more positive and ready to face what lies ahead.

Sheena - thinking about you this last week and wonder what decision you have made regarding chemo.  Please keep us posted and let us know after your appt - is it tomorrow?

Joyce 11 - hope the lack of side effects continued and I hope I fair as well tomorrow.  At the chemo talk, we were told there are icicles on your hair afterwards and to bring a blanket, think I will need a hot water bottle or two!

Hopefullyholly - I am having the same chemo as you - how long were you at the hospital and hope I too have minimal side effects. Any tips appreciated.

Manicmum - love the i.d. name - diagnosis and chemo has come so quickly.  It takes time for you to get your head around it yourself before embarking on treatment.  You must feel it is all a bad dream.  Hope your first chemo went okay and you feel reassured that a treatment plan has now been started for you.

Sending big hugs xx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi I had my first FEC session on Friday 3/7. Was only diagnosed two weeks ago a55mm grade 3 tumor in my right breast and a smaller tumor in my lymph nodes.
It's all happening so quickly. She many scans and tests.
Hope you're all coping well
X

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Glad to hear that Nico. It's good that you are happy with your oncologist - I'm not so sure about my oncologist, although may be me being sensitive at the moment but he was a bit abrupt. It's good that you'll be able to celebrate your birthday before you start your chemo journey.
Hi Sperry - how are you getting on - we are having the same type of chemo but I'll be about 4 weeks behind you.
Good luck next week Em1986 and to all those starting chemo soon xxx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi Carolec

Thanks for asking about my appointment.  It was fine - a really lovely oncologist who was very reassuring about my prognosis.  I will be having FEC and have decided against the cold cap, as I have fibromyalgia & am very sensitive to the cold.

Guess what though: I won't be starting until 1/8! So it seems I don't really belong in my own thread (you & I can be stowaways in July's thread together). The delay is because the dr wants me to be ok for my birthday in August & a later start works out better - very considerate!

Best wishes to you & all the July threaders

Nicoxx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi All

My 5 injections are Nivestim which is used for helping the body to make more white blood cells so will take all the help I can get. Mind you a GnT might be required before I do the first one tomorrow evening. So far so good with first chemo but expect more after the next ones!!

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi All thought I'd join this thread I'm starting chemo on 10th July. 3xFEC then 3xT

I'm 29 had lumpectomy 16mm grade III triple negative, margins and nodes clear. Chemo and radiotherapy are my only options to stop recurrence so got to go with it. Had my hair chopped off today grateful for it due to the weather but haven't had hair this short before! I'm also having zoladex injections to put my ovaries to sleep anyone else having this?

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi Hopefulholly, I should have started in July but will be a bit behind everyone as starting week beginning 3 August.  Good that you had minimal side effects and long may that continue.

Ros - good luck with your first chemo next Tuesday - I kind of wish I was getting going with it but I couldn't miss my nieces wedding in Italy, especially as my girls are bridesmaids.

Joyce I'm also going to give the cold cap a go - not sure what good it will do me, but I will try.  I'm also having the picc line so hope its not too bad?  Why are you having five lots of injections - I've not been told anything about that but I have found they don't twell you everything, maybe too much to take in?  xx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi ladies, my first chemo was on 23 June but as my next has been delayed until 17 July I'll be more in line with July starters so would like to join in with this thread. Having 3 FEC then 3 T. I've also had minimal side effects (touch wood). Sending virtual hugs to my virtual breast friends! X

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi Nico, how did your appointment go with the oncologist yesterday - do you know when you'll be starting your treatment xx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Good evening everyone

inspired by the courage here,  if I do decide to go ahead and have chemotherapy I know that I am not alone and will be able to get, and hopefully give support

sending you all my very best wishes

sheena xx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi Ros

Cold cap looks like a jockeys helmet and mine was purple!! Very cold for first few minutes then I found it quite tolerable it just extends the time you are in the unit but small price to pay. Definitely worth a try because if you don't you'll spend your time thinking what would it have been like. I know that's what made e give it a go and still no guarantees about the hair.

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Hi Carolec, wishing you a fantastic holiday.  It is something to look forward to and take your mind off starting chemo.  The waiting and thinking about it is sometimes harder than actually getting on and doing it.

Hi Joyce, how did the first chemo session go and what was the cold cap like to wear? I am going to try it and hopefully will not be too cold in this weather. I imagine it like a helmet!

Hi Sperry, hope your first chemo went okay.  Please let us know.

Sending big hugs.  xx

Re: Anyone starting chemo in July 2015?

Yep, hello there I'm having my first lot of FEC on July 13. Met the onc yesterday. Mastectomy, single, left side was on 4th June. Not sure I'll be at hand holding, virtual or otherwise but happy to give it a go.
