Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Tina,

I too had a headache like the one you describe. When I called my chemo/oncology 24 hour helpline they asked me to come in to the hospital as it could be a sign of infection.

Take care, Isabelle xx

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Bottyboo, I think it depends very much. My onco offered them straight away, although my bloods are fine at the moment. The chemo nurse said she would teach me to inject myself, so presume I will be given to take home. However - I will not inject myself - I am unable to inflict any kind of pain to myself deliberately, so will set up with the nurse in my local GPs practice. xxx

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

sorry to hear you have had a stinking headache. Did you manage to get to CT scan? Hope they didn't keep you waiting too long. I have a few bone aches this eve following injection yesterday. just thinking about taking some pain killers but body not copying with all the drugs and thus taking movicol for constipation. just tried natural liquorice too!! Cal😎

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Paprika, same diagnosis as mine, so guess the age, etc makes a difference. Good luck - We'll catch up when I have my first one behind me. xx

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi ladies. Have just come back from signing consent. Can I ask those of you that have started, did you have the gcsf injections routinely to have at home or not?
I belong to a WhatsApp group formed with friends met on here and they are all chemo first. They are based in Leicester Darlington and Burton and all have the injections to give routinely on day 3 or something for a few days. However chemo nurse said in Peterborough they only give you them if your blood results warrant them.

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Well I'm sick of this bloody headache I must say. Had it most of the night and could hardly move this morning. Any tablets i take dull it for half an hour then its back with vengeance. Not sure what to do with it. ..got to buck up though cos I've a ct scan at 3.30. Really don't feel like moving but even lying still isn't helping. X

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Bottyboo,

hope all goes well with you. Your question with T...I don't know more about that. x

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Sue,

thank you for the long list of suggestions, that helps. Some of them I have read before, I have been to the dentist, but the antibacterial mouthwash, ginger biscuits are on my shopping list.

I had a look at your fotos, you look great, your wig looks very natural.

I have Invasive lobular breast cancer and had my surgery mid April.

Have a good day x

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Botty bo
It will depend on type of cancer, grade age and fitness. T seems to be 'stronger' , and was not deemed necessary for me.

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Welcome Paprika. I start on the 20th so a day after Sue. I have had my chemo delayed and will only believe it's going to happen when it's physically going in.
Can I ask why some of you are only having FEC and not T too?

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Paprika, Well, there is a long list - lol The drinking is to help the bad bits of the chemo to flush through your kidneys, as it irritats the bladder. The more you drink - the lesser the effect, as it will all be well diluted. It is a good idea to have gone to the dentist to ensure no dental work needs doing whilst on chemo. Have a soft toothbrush at home and some antibacterial mouthwash, which is best used 3 times a day. I have had my hair shaved off on Saturday and the my hairdresser also styled my wig. It is artificial hair, but he did a brilliant job. So I am already wearing my wig. Feel free to look at my pictures on my profile page. You might want to take something with you to keep your mind occupied - as the actual treatment is 90 mins., plus waiting time for them to set up your chemo. Some ginger biscuits to nibble whilst also having some lemon and ginger tea might sustain you through the treatment and help with nausea, should it strike. If you can, or if the unit has them - it is well worth sucking on ice chips and lollies to keep the mouth cold - it may help keeping soreness and mouth ulcers at bay. Also some boiled sweets to help not getting a sore throat. If you easily suffer from thrush - talk to your GP, so you have medication available at home, should it strike. I do not know whether you had your op yet. If yes, you must ensure they use the opposite arm to to the operation site for the cannula. Lol, that is all that comes to mind at the moment - and I am sure you have read about these things from other posts, too. The only other thing to consider is that the FEC chemo has a sort of 'cumulative effect and apparently it is best to ensure you can have the week off work (should you be working) after the 4th cycle to give yourself a proper rest. Phew......... xx

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Flower,

Thats good to hear it's not too bad, I hope the next days will be fine for you

Hi Sue,

Thursday, thats not far, I will think of you and send some positive powerful thoughts.

Why you have to drink 2 litres of water...every day? well maybe its manageable...its summer.

I started my preparations, got a wig, but not sure if I wear it, looks funny... maybe Beanies are fine too. What else I have to think about?

Good luck x

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Paprika, welcome to our exclusive club, lol. I start my 6 x FEC on Thursday 19th. Will keep you up to date with my happenings, as same regime and just a tad ahead of you. All my preparations are made, yes, I am a little nervous, but have taken the following day off work and then it is the weekend. So hopefully will cope with it all. Bar the drinking of 2 litres of water per day - I am all set! The sooner it starts - the sooner it will be over. Mind you I still have 15 rads to go after that. Hope all goes well with you x

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Paprika,

Welcome. I am on TAC rather than FEC but it looks like all of us who started are doing more than ok. I can only say 2 days were bad, and that was due to feeling exhausted only. You will find some ideas is you look through the thread x

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hello everyone,

I am new here, starting my 6 x FEC on may 24th, I am a bit nervous but ready to go...would be great to be a part of the chemo buddy group 🙂

Paprika x

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Rosie, cheese and biscuits sounds like a good idea not too heavy. It's good to hear that any possible side effects don't usually kick in straight away. I'm sure you are right and once I've got the first one over my anxiety should ease, hope so anyway! I will definitely be drinking the water. Thanks for replying xx

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Thanks Tina, not long now, going out to get last minute bits today. Speak soon xx

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi tanyette. Sorry for the late reply.
I second what Rosie says.....just eat whatever you feek like. I took a packed lunch with me but didn't eat as I struggled with the chin **bleep** the cap. I'm sure you'll be fine....just be prepared for lots of waiting around. ...read etc to take your mind off but everyone is so understanding. Good luck hun. Xx

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Tanyette have whatever you fancy it is important to eat!!! I used to take cheese and biscuits with me as I was always there over lunchtime and a fruit drink plus of course the water! It will come and go and you will not feel so anxious once you have started! Any possible side effects don't usually kick in straight away. Treat yourself to a magazine or a puzzle book to take with you!

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Tina, just a quick question what did you eat prior to first chemotherapy. I'm at the hospital for 10.30 for bloods then oncologist for consent at 11.20 but my actual treatment is 2pm. I'm going to drink the 2 litres as advised by the others but as hoping not to be sick I wondered what to have beforehand xx

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Lynnn, just wondered how today went. Hope it wasn't too bad for you, was thinking about you and Cal today. Xx

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Cal, glad you have the first one over and are ok. Keep us posted I just want Thursday to come now to get started but like you I will be surprised if I don't have a moment! Hope you get a good nights rest xx

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Cal, well done - 1 gone, lol. As to water based nail varnish - I shall ask when I am due for my first session on Thursday. I know Clinique to a range for sensitive skin - not cheap, but very good. But I cannot find out whether it is water based. Mind you it is free of other horrid stuff, such as Formaldehyde. Formaldehyde– This known carcinogen is found in many nail polishes. It is also used to preserve dead things and when used in lab preparations, there are strict warnings to avoid inhalation or skin contact. If this is the specific ingredient to be avoided, then Clinique is a good option. Will report back, once I know more. xx

Xx

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi everyone home from treatment. Hospital team were brill, very supportive and understanding when i had a moment ( tissues at the ready). sorry about previous post!! Feel ok have a fuzzy head (is that what people describe as a hangover?) never had one of those! Trying to drink lots, including 'ginger' tea. How is everyone else? Isabelle how are you following your exciting day yesterday? Nurse today spend ke about painting nails but more importantly keeping ng the cuticles moisturised. varnish needs to be water based ( whatever that means, another new concept to me!) Thanks for all messages. 😎Cal

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Cal, just wondered how it went today? I think you have posted but it's only showing a part sentence. I will check other threads to see if you are on them. Hope you are ok xx

Well done Tracy!
Im thinking of buying some clear lens glasses to disguise the eyelash impending situation! X

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Cal and Lynn i just wanna wish you both all the best for tomorrow you will be fine. When in started my chemo on monday i finally thought yes I can start fighting back (i am having my chemo before masectomy)...
I didn't realise i couldn't have ice cream from the van so thats good to know and the idea about packing an overnight bag just in case is a great idea.
I went floppy sun hat and extra big sunglass shopping today (to hide my non existant eye brows if i lose them) so that cheered me up.
Glad to hear everyone seems to have had a good week after our first session...we can do this ladies 😘

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Im having fec x 3 then fect x 3 too.

Agree...its the unknown,  i had a 2 hour wait for my 1st too which didn't help nerves. Its surreal walking into the room and being shown to your seat but the atmosphere was strangely upbeat and really  friendly which  certainly helped. Theres no discomfort during the actual process, the canula didnt hurt either. And youre constantly  checked on and reassured....you will be out quickly too seeing as no cap. Then go home and listen to your  body and take all meds given. Xxx

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Yes Fec-T like you I think. Have decided not to cold cap. I think it is the unknown side effects that are causing me to be worried. 😎 Cal

Have put some very expensive nail stregthener on and will paint them blcack in the morning. First treatment tomorrow so feeling apprehensive to say the least but your message has given me a boost! 😎 Cal

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Yes ladies it is doable. I'm now on day 4 of fec and dare I say feel normal. ..apart from the messy hair lol. Only se's of note so far were tummy discomfort. ..like trapped wind, gaviscon and ginger beer shifted that. And tiredness occasionally. Just hope it carries on like this! X

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Congratulations! Well done - so great to hear that it really is possible to do our usual activities. Gives me so much confidence. xxx

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Well my pretty ponio only went and won her class!  It was only an in-hand but I was so proud of her and it gave me confidence that we can continue doing the stuff we love despite what we are going through 🙂 Can't lie - am feeling it now but we had a lovely day.

Am so thankful to have found this forum - the tips and other peoples stories make it invaluable at a scary time.....xxxFullSizeRender (6).jpg

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Lynn - welcome - like you I start treatment tomorrow ! I think I have all the practicalities sorted and trying to drink at leat 2L of water today (another tip given to us!). I am having FEC-T and dreading it but it has to be done. Just thinking this time tomorrow session 1 will be done. Had a lovely roast at lunchtime and just debating what to have in the morning before treatment, maybe best to just have a light breaky. I will let you know how things go. 😎 Cal

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi, it is my pleasure. Also just started a new thread - Chemotherapy Tips and Tricks - which I hope will become a resource for all newbies like us. You'll find it under the General heading of Chemotherapy. There is a thread of Top tips to help you through chemo - but I thought I might start something a bit more specific. Let me know your thoughts. xx

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Sue, that website looks great thank you! Isabelle

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Missy, Good luck today! - Let us know how you get on - great to know there are other horse lovers on the forum. It gives me the confidence to go back to our local stables and perhaps start riding again. I stopped, when I was diagnosed and unfortunately my beloved steed had to join the heard in the sky shortly afterwards, as he developed 'wobbler syndrome'

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

hope you have a good day at the show.

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th

Hi Isabelle - again, lol As you do not like the look of the 'head gear' either - I am looking around M & S and John Lewis to get some scarves, which are more acceptable. Unfortunately silk scarves will not do the trick, as they will slip off. Found this site - all sorts of ways to tie varying scarves - http://www.scarves.net/how-to-tie-a-scarf/head-scarves xx

Re: Anyone want to be my chemo buddy? Start may 9th
