Re: Bedfordshire

We haven't been to Morocco before - we've been to Tunisia and Egypt. This holiday is a special treat - we were supposed to go away in June but had to postpone to September, then my FiL was taken into hospital so we had to cancel. November was the earliest we could plan again, so we decided to go to the warmest place we could get to with our Airmiles/Avios - which was Marrakech.

We had great fun at our last meeting - it was at a hairdressers and we had such a giggle (wine might have been involved...) We've also done yoga, had reflexology, beauty treatments etc.

Hope all goes really well for your op and hope to see you in 2013.

Re: Bedfordshire

What I liked about your group is that you don't meet at hospital. But as I said it is my op day that day! So it will have to wait til the month after or January even given Xmas and all.
Have a great time in Marrakkech, I love Morocco!
See you soon I hope.

Re: Bedfordshire

It would be lovely to meet you m-c! I won't be at the next one though, on November 27th, as that's the day we fly out to Marrakech for a week Smiley Happy

There's also a group that meet at Bedford Hospital called Bosom Pals, but I've never been to any of their meetings as I didn't want to go to the hospital any more than necessary!

Hi Jane I think I might come to one of your meetings as there doesn't seem to be many ladies in Cambridgeshire, I am very surprised about that!. I will check the webbsite xxx

Re: Bedfordshire

Hi midgemoo,

Whereabouts are you? I live in Turvey. For anyone to the west of Bedford or in the Olney/MK area, there's a support group that meet in Lavendon on the last Tuesday of every month. The website's here http://wereinthepink.org.uk/ or on FB at http://www.facebook.com/#!/WereInThePink?fref=ts . We're a very friendly bunch! Smiley Happy

Re: Bedfordshire

Oh definitely, I thought that group met elsewhere. I'd like to set up a group and meet in an uplifting place such as the George in Buckden for example, or around a meal.
OK I have asked to join the FB group so you can then message me once I have been accepted then we will take it from there to see when and where to meet. I also know of another lady in our area (she might not be on FB or any forums) but she is willing to share her story. So it would be nice to form a little group (it doesn't have to be huge) and meet regularly. I have a close friendship group and we do this and since they got to know about me they decided we'd meet every week over coffee at the George in Buckden actually so it is nice but they are not facing the things I am facing so not always as supportive as it could be.

Re: Bedfordshire

I am definitely happy to meet. The one in Huntingdon is at hinchingbrooke hospital. ( that's where I had my chemo and go for herceptin). It am not sure of numbers that go. it would be quite nice to meet away from a hospital though. :-)

Donna, I live in St Neots and would be more than happy to create a group for our area. Don't know how to go about it unless there is already one, I am new to all this so will investigate further before creating any new group xx

Re: Bedfordshire

Hi N,

I'd love to meet you all. Feeling lonely and upset after treatment ended last week. I am TN so options ended abruptly after the brutality of Tax, mastectomy and rads. It's not that I am jealous of those who have to carry on in hospitals but cancer took over my life and became my full time job - now I am struggling to put myself back together again. At the moment I don't know how to do that. My confidence has taken a battering and it would be great to meet people who understand that and hopefully have a laugh.

Hope to hear from you.

Re: Bedfordshire

Hi Cressida
Came across your post accidentally! I meet up with a group of ladies in St. Albans every month. We're from Herts, Beds and Bucks. We met through the forums almost a couple of years ago and we're a mixed group of primary and secondary ladies. A very friendly bunch.
We are planning a meeting in Bedford later on in November if you're interested to come along?
I don't come here often these days, but will check to see if you'll respond.

Hi ladies,

Hunted down this thread and no-one has been on it for a while but I thought I would try "bumping" it to see if any Bedfordshire ladies are out there. I am in Dunstable. Anyone out there??

Re: Bedfordshire

Hi Charlotte,

The Maggie's centre at Charing Cross Hospital is a wonderful place http://www.maggiescentres.org/.

I went to the LGFB session at Luton & Dunstable - they did it at Addenbrooke's as well but that one isn't running at the moment due to logistical reasons. I think L&D is a bit closer for those of us to the west of Bedford anyway. It was loads of fun and I highly recommend it - it's definitely nice to go with a friend so you can laugh at each other's attempts to draw eyebrows .

Re: Bedfordshire

Hi Donna,

Im not sure what chemo treatments your on but I had 4xfec and 12 weekly taxol. The best tips i can give you is listen to your body and rest don't overdo it, stay away from ill people and public places when your white count at its lowest (I think it's 7-10days after chemo), eat healthy, ask for help with household tasks - cooking and cleaning if needed. I found I really struggled to sleep when having chemo due to the steroids and had to resort to sleeping tablets. Keep your skin moisturised. I also kept my finger nails and toes covered in black nail varnish to protect the nail beds, I read that tip on here somewhere and my nails have been ok throughout. Theirs a helpful thread on here regarding tips for chemo. Everyones body reacts differently to it but the time does go quick.

The look good feel good, I'm booked to do it next month at my hospital in London. I struggled to find complimentary therapy centers near us, but discovered this week the haven near fulham boardway tube, it's a specialist center for people who have breast cancer, offering help and support and treatments. Not ideal location wise as its in london.

It is lovely having forums like this to talk to others going through the same. Please don't feel your being annoying, we are all going through the same just at different stages. I'm going on abit today!

My rads has been put on hold as I reacted to my first one skin wise and I saw my consultant today, and we think it too soon for my body after the chemo it's been three weeks but my skins ultrasensitive. I'm also not ready mentally and was questioning if I actually needed them. It's been abit of an emotional roller coaster this week. I had a severve reaction to my very last chemo much to the shock of everyone and it's really thrown me mentally even three weeks on and im still destressed by it. But think it was my body saying it had had enough after 24 weeks. Allergic reactions are common with taxol but it's not usual to have one like mine. So please don't panic. I was fine with all the chemo other than the normal side effects which you expect. On a positive note my hair starting growing back half way through the taxol, I never went completely bald just large patches. And one used the cold cap once, I really didn't like it, but others do and aresuccessful and manage to keep their hair.

Its lovely to hear from you Donna

How are the other Bedfordshire ladies getting on with your treatment?

Hi All

Just 'found' this thread again, couldn't get on to site for ages when it was being improved!!

Lynn just had second op as didn't get clear margins and had scans, got to have another to double check something then hopefully start chemo, have heard good things about Primrose Unit, hope we get to meet up there x

Charlotte, you are way ahead of me any tips re chemo would be welcome, hope rads is doable and goes ok xx

I am interested in the feel good look good sessions would any of you ladies be interested in trying to get on one together, think we deserve a bit of a treat...Lynn they suggest we go in middle of chemo or at the end when we might need their help to 'look like ourselves' the most!!!

Will keep in touch and probably annoy you all with regular comments cos the support and friendships really helps

love and wishes

Re: Bedfordshire

Lost this thread until today, so hope the rest of you have been able to find it and hope you didn't think I was being unsociable by not replying.
Smudge - Hope your op went well and you are on the road to recovery.
I live in Cranfield. Know where Sharnbrook is as I once covered a maternity leave at the school. I am still too swollen with fluid to risk driving far. But may be later.
Jane - it's so nice to know that other people also think that Bedford is good. The breast clinic there gave me excellent care. I even wrote to chief exec to sing their praises. Still hug my heart shaped pilow. I know that many other ladies in other parts of the country are not given this little, thoughtful luxury.
Seeing my onc for the first time on Friday. Really pleased to hear that the Primrose unit is friendly and caring, and the care of the onc. well thought of. It makes it all a bit less daunting.
Hope now the forum is running better we will be able to keep in touch.

Re: Bedfordshire

Lynn,

I'm in Turvey, Beds and have known Donna/Smudge for a very loooong time. I had my surgery at Biddenham Manor, chemo at Bedford and rads at Addenbrookes. All of my treatment has been excellent - the Primrose Unit is such a lovely place and the staff all deserve awards for their work and the wonderful atmosphere they create. One of the clinical support workers lives round the corner from me so it was especially nice to see a familiar face. We're so lucky to have a place like that for our treatment.

Another big plus is that whenever I've been I've always seen my own onc, never another member of the team, and I've never felt rushed - she's always spent as long with me as I've needed. I know a lot of other people on here only very rarely see their actual onc so I think it's pretty unusual.

Re: Bedfordshire

Hi Donna,

I've sent you a PM. And in answer to your question, I couldn't find anyone in Beds either when I was diagnosed apart from someone I already knew (who you know as well, if I'm right about who you are!)

I've met up with some folks in MK and I ended up going to Reading a few times to meet up with a gang of very noisy ladies from all over the south and Midlands, a lot of who were very busy on the Dark, Dark Woods and Pink Road of Chemo threads (you'll find them if you dig deeply enough through the forums or use the search). A group of us have stayed very close friends which is lovely - we understand each other in ways that no-one else can!
