Breast Cancer Awareness Month – introducing #hiddeneffects

Hello all,

As many of you are aware, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month; a time to increase awareness and raise funds to support people facing breast cancer. This year, we want to tell the real story of what it’s like to have breast cancer. And we’d really like your help.

Breast cancer changes everything. We want to be here to support everyone who is facing the ‘hidden effects’ of a breast cancer diagnosis.

What do we mean by #hiddeneffects?

We want to give a unique insight into the lives of people facing breast cancer today.

For example, thirty-three-year-old Laura had to delay treatment to have IVF: her treatment put her through early menopause.

Frances’ breast cancer spread 10 years after her original diagnosis: it’s no longer curable.

And Doug (52) couldn’t believe it when he was told he had breast cancer – he had no idea men could get it too.

Together, by highlighting our ‘hidden effects’, we can support each other, share insights and reveal the unseen realities of breast cancer.

We also want to shine a light on the sometimes unexpected, positive outcomes that a breast cancer diagnosis can bring. For example, finding the strength to change career, becoming a volunteer, or making new friends through this shared experience.

By bringing the hidden effects of breast cancer to the fore, we can help people to understand the impact it has on individuals’ lives and, we hope, encourage more people to support our work.

Secondary Breast Cancer Awareness Day

Monday 13 October is Secondary Breast Cancer Awareness Day. We’ll specifically be focusing on the ‘hidden effect’ of pain, and pain management. Our aim is to raise awareness of the needs, issues and challenges people with a secondary diagnosis face.

We’re really looking forward to sharing more on how you can get involved in supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month and specific activity around Secondary Breast Cancer Awareness Day soon. But, for now, we’d love to hear from you if you’re interested in helping us to launch this campaign. We want to ensure that, come October, our voices are united in bringing the hidden effects of breast cancer to the public.

Email forum@breastcancercare.org.uk with the subject ‘Hidden Effects’ if you’d like to join our campaign to highlight #hiddeneffects this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and on Secondary Breast Cancer Awareness Day.

We’ll be back with further updates very soon.

Best wishes,

Helen :womanhappy:

Hi All

Here is the promised update for you, following on from the previous post by Helen, telling you about our plans for Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM).

Just in case you missed it, you can read the previous post, with more background, here forum.breastcancercare.org.uk/t5/Announcements/Breast-Cancer-Awareness-Month-introducing-hiddeneffects/m-p/874273

We are launching our #hiddeneffects campaign later today on our Facebook and twitter pages, in preparation for October.  We thought you, our forum users, would like to see a sneak preview, so here it is.

We are focusing on the hidden effects of what it’s really like to have breast cancer, and have various points of focus for this. The aim of this campaign is to raise awareness of breast cancer, encourage people to get involved with us as a charity and to encourage support through a variety of fundraising options, so that we can continue our work supporting those who are facing breast cancer. Please visit the campaign microsite breastcancercare.org.uk/hiddeneffects to see some of the stories that have been shared with us and find out more.

For Secondary Breast Cancer Awareness Day we’ll be focusing on the ‘hidden effect’ of pain and pain management. Our aim is to raise awareness of the issues people living with secondary breast cancer face in terms of controlling pain and accessing services that can help them manage their pain more effectively. At the moment we are asking those who have been diagnosed with secondary breast cancer to take just five minutes of their time to complete a survey about the hidden effects of living with pain surveys.breastcancercare.org.uk/share-your-experiences. The results of this will be shared on Secondary Breast Cancer Awareness Day (SBCAD). There will be more information available nearer the time as well as ways for you to get involved on Secondary Breast Cancer Awareness Day itself and we will be sharing these details as soon as we can.

Here is a sample of what you may see when you are out and about, on Facebook or other social media channels, you can click on the images below to see the full size versions. It would be great if you could help spread the word, share your own hidden effects or share some of the campaign creative to help raise awareness of what it’s really like to live with breast cancer.

Best wishes,

Anna
